Artis Senior Living

The facility is clean and the staff are friendly. There are several nurses who attend to my mom and they are very thorough and attentive. Due to the structure of the facility, the residents do not have phones so to contact a resident, arrangements need to be made with the nurse when she visits the resident. Sometimes this works well but sometimes the nurse forgets and that is a bit frustrating although due to the condition of many residents it is the only option. In general the care has been good and the special events, particularly live music is very much enjoyed by some of the residents.

I visited four places. The layout at Artis was a strong point....two wings, four "neighborhoods," so mom only has 8 or 10 immediate neighbors to learn about, and the staff has limited people to care for. Food is good and not overwhelming, i.e., small portions. Each wing has its own kitchen and serving area, so no one has to go to a big cafeteria. Her room is a small studio, but I was allowed to furnish it with her stuff, her own bed and chairs and TV. Full bath, kitchen-ish area with a half-fridge, sink and cabinet. Very friendly staff, seems to be competent. Despite the effort to create an intimate environment, the left hand still seems not to know what the right hand is doing. I asked them to be responsible for her hearing aids, but the word still does not seem to have gotten around. 80% of the times I visit her (3-4x/wk), she is either not wearing one or has a dead one in. Plus, they have lost one. The "activities" are OK, but about 10 years behind the times. They do preschool and kindergarten [removed], coloring and decorating, singalongs where no one but the leader sings. The residents are given no responsibilities, a plant or a pet to care for, a job to help in the community. They are all mobile and could do a lot, but the need to be needed is left unsatisfied. As for value, my sense is that this is as good as it gets around here in central Jersey. These for-profit places are simply untrustworthy by their very nature, existing as do to drain the hard-earned savings of old people under the guise of providing a necessary social service. They all, even the best of them, need to be watched like hawks and held accountable. It is not a business ecosystem that I am at all pleased to have to participate in.

It's memory care only which is best for someone who needs memory care. All other facilities only had a wing for their memory care residence, but Artis focuses on memory care only. It's expensive but the entire industry is shamefully expensive and as we have no choice, given this country's healthcare system in general and how we, as Americans generally treat our elderly, you get what you pay for. It's clean. It's organized well. There are lots of activities. I've never eaten there. I can't tell you anything about the food. My mom seems happy.

The overall experience, the care services, and the staff experience has been very good. The cleanliness and the friendliness has been excellent. The meals and dining services has been so so and the value for cost is ok. Yes, we would recommend the community to other families based on the experience.

I don't live local, which means I have not had more than one opportunity to visit my mom since she moved in. That being said, what I noticed when I went… Her room is nice. Good size? Yes. Bathroom was clean. The activities are saving her. So yes to the activities! There are many. They are frequent. And I hope they never stop. She seemed clean… So I'm guessing she is being well cared for. She interacted with a couple of the staff members and they were nice to her. Based on what little time I've been able to spend there, I would say the place is between a four and a five only because it's difficult to give a five after only one visit. My sisters have been there more often than me as they actually live in the state of New Jersey And they both are satisfied with her care.

Overall experience has been great. Staff is very kind and attentive. Lots of activities: arts and crafts, music, chair exercises, singing. Food is good, apartment is very clean, her personal care is very good. Communication responses when I actively request information. I would prefer a policy of providing regular status updates on general health, vital statistics, cognitive state, perception.

Staff is super friendly and supportive for both the resident and their family. We've had good reports about the food and responsiveness of caregivers. Residents can customize the room with some flexibility. We've replaced the standard chair, dresser, bedding, and towels to mirror more of what he'd have used at home, and it fits well, although i do wish the room was a little bit larger with more outlets which would make furniture placement easier.

The facility has a great outdoor area that residents can access without escorts. It is set up as different neighborhoods on one floor which completes a circle. This makes it less confusing for residents The rooms are small but it doesn’t seem to matter to the residents They hold lots of activities and go on outings monthly. This is a memory care facility only, so there are all stages of memory loss. You need to understand that going in because you may be there on a visit and one resident may join in on your visit unexpectedly I like the fact that residents do not have to wear any alert necklaces or bracelets I think some maintenance items could use a little more attention All in all, I would recommend this facility for anyone who is dealing with a loved one with memory loss

Variety of activities even though my mom participates in few. Most of the care partners are very patient and kind to the residents, although there are a couple that complain a bit. The staff are very friendly and quick to respond to situations

Very happy with facility, staff and activities. I would absolutely recommend. I like the way it feels like a home. It has plenty of space both indoors and a wonderful amount of safe outdoor space.

The staff of Artis did a great job with my 99 year old aunt. She had severe dementia and was also profoundly deaf. She could be and often was verbally abusive as well as physically aggressive. At times I hired extra staff to deal with her after falls or trips to the hospital. I employed my own PhD nurse practitioner to over see her meds and other issues. The hospice team were loving and attentive until her death. It was ONLY them that sent condolences. The Artis staff still have not said a word. The business office was also rude. Nice behavior should r before and after a resident's death.

The food was excellent, seeming to fit each residents' dietary needs and wants with a variety of choice. The arts and crafts there were wonderful, and the nice lady in charge often sent pictures of the residents enjoying themselves. The nurses and attendants knew what to do, stopped to listen and provide advice. However, one time when the emergency call button had been activated in an emergency for mother at night, no one came. Artis staff had allowed me to stay over night. I had to leave my mother alone and go find the nurse.

One of their strengths is managing clients who have dementia, but also have a history of mental illness. They also seem to have a lot of activities going on daily and good food.each time I have come the hallways and common areas are clean and well kept, no weird smells and clients appear well taken care of. Where they could improve is with the administrative staff, specifically related to their communication to the family about the clients.

The care partners who are there daily are so kind caring and compassionate to each individual. They have so many fun activities, field trips and special events. It is very clean and a very beautiful homie facility. Unfortunately, my mom needed more medical care than they are equipped to support. However, they will offer hospice as an alternative. It was appropriate for my mom but not for everyone.

The administrative staff is very good-especially [name removed] the exec director. The activities are excellent- they take the high functioning residents on field trips once a month. There are too many agency caregivers- they need to hire more staff and pay them more. The Dr.s who care for my mother are excellent and visit her often. The food is very bland and boring according to my mom.

For residents who are mobile, Artis is superior because they can move around, visit other neighborhoods. The staff was very understanding and caring of me and my husband to initiate and actually make the move. I am impressed at how caring the staff is to residents. And the food is varied and appetizing.

Cost is excessive; after one year they jacked the cost per month by 7.5%. I would move mom on that fact alone; but I feel moving my mom would not be best for her mental and emotional state. Food seems pretty poor. Turnover on administrative staff is constant. Understaffed. The staff that they do have are very nice and competent ; but spread thin.

The staff seems engaging and genuinely care. Sometimes seems understaffed but that's everywhere. I recommend Artis and have had no real issues or problems

I'm there relatively infrequently because of having relocated for work. However, it's been good when I'm there, and my brothers (in the area) also seem happy with it. I actually don't know what it costs, since one of my brothers handles my Mom's finances.

I would highly recommend Artis. They are strictly a memory care unit definitely which my parents need. They keep residents stimulated and have ongoing activities for them every day rather than have them waste away in a room.
