our families experience

My loved one heard staff talking badly about her referring to her as a profanity that I do not prefer to write in this survey. The activities that are listed on the daily calendar rarely exist. There is very little stimulation during the day for the residents. It’s very disheartening! The floors are always tacky and I rarely see housekeeping. I frequently clean my moms floor in her room when I visit.

Bait and switch

Independent living review. Nice at first. They will jump through hoops to get you locked into a lease, then HIKE the rent well beyond the means of most middle-class retirees. Expect a 20% increase annually. They will evict you without thinking twice. Lack of compassion or interest in the well-being of their residents. They see $$$$$, that's it.

Personally, I would obviously not share everything, that's not who I am but considering my father was there a month and a day, passed away and was charged the fee for the year, I believe in exceptions! I certainly did not think that was good proper business ethics! I would only recommend someone that needed assisted living, nothing more because my father was in memory care and did not receive the care he desperately needed which I have to live with forever, however, I would recommend [name removed] highly!

Great place for independent residents, not for someone who needs extra care

The Gables is advertised as an independent resisdence, and they have an aide service, not associated with them right at the facility, for an additional cost. My mother lived there for a few years and was happy. She used the on site aide service, and received pretty good care. My mother died this past year, and looking back, I wish I would have moved her when her health started to decline. I don't think the aide service is prepared for a higher level of care. Also, after continuous calling, texting and emailing, I still have an ongoing financial issue with the owner of the aide service after almost a year. The Gables is a great place for independent and low level dependent residents. The aides are caring and have a low turn over. The main problem is with the owner of the aide service. I just don't want another family member to go thru what I have.

Looking to Move Elsewhere

Don't assume anything is being taken care, just stay on top of it. The general staff is good, but management is not great. They've failed to notify us in advance of doctor appointments, so we've missed them. When we confronted them, they simply said they were sorry and they're trying to do better. We just received notice that fees are going up. I have not been very happy with them.

Loved One

At first loved this place...it is nice and homey - two buildings with 25 seniors in each. Food - breakfast is the only half decent meal. Lunch which is the heavy meal is usually a dried up pork chop, potato/rice and a dessert. Dinner which is light is soup (usually tomatoe) and old premade sandwiches Forget planned snacks as advised ...unless a planned snack is graham crackers all day and maybe apples Staff-some are lovely - but wish the balance of them had compassion Activities - a joke - unless you play bingo Trips - if the van is not broke down then maybe the dollar store or odd lot If they would improve on all above then I would suggest having a loved one live there BUT right now they need NEW management

I received a phone call from Legacy at Maiden Park and shared with them the care that I am looking for for my dad. They were concerned that my dad has a catheter and that they couldn't assist him with it, if he needed it. I spoke to the nurse at that facility, she confirmed that they could not take him because of this.

I would give this a fair rating for assisted living; however, for memory care, I would rate it poor. It's a small facility, two buildings containing a total of 48 units. There is no secure area for dementia residents. Dementia residents need extra attention and structure, and I don't feel they would get it here if they can just roam around the building with other residents. There is no reception area. People sign in and out in a book on a table by the entrance. Families enter via a keypad by the door. It doesn't give one a strong sense of security for a family member with Alzheimer's. Staff was friendly and personable, but I didn't see activities going on, other than the rosary being said in a group.

Dirty and Smelly with Lots of Pets

It was kind of dirty and smelly so my dad and I were both pretty turned off by that. It was more expensive and a lot of the rooms didn't have a full bath, just a powder room and you had to go down the hall to take a shower. I though for the cost you should at least have a shower in your room. This might be a good thing for some people but at Atria we saw a lot of people coming out with their dogs and cats. My brother is allergic to cats so if my mother went there he wouldn't be able to visit her. Again, that could be a good thing for some people. It was just dingy and smelly, especially after seeing one that was so clean and bright.

Not Pleased.....

There is always a revolving door of staff. Very upset over the poor quality of food served. My parent is there and they have been through numerous help/cooks within a short period of time. Very poor housekeeping there. Pay a very high rate for loved one to be there and stuff that should be included they don't even do, so please don't be fooled from their brochure. They do not provide snacks, and the housekeeping is very close to null. But on a plus side, the activities director is great. But the management is left to be desired. Very poor management.

Improvements needed

My bro was there one hour before eloping Went back about a week later to the secure area and lasted 24 hours before elopement Oversight / security/ observation lacking Met with administrator ( he was not forthcoming ) Made promises in regard to refunds that still have not happen -- ( that meeting was 2 months ago ) He won't return phone calls Talked with corporate - awaiting on return phone call that they said would happen 2 days ago. I have never as much sent a complaint letter in my life or even done a review I understand that some places my not be good fits, and I accept that Our family accepted that after what happened and was ready to move on. But the follow up meeting is what pretty much set things off with misrepresentations, promises that we're not kept , and subsequent radio silence. Improvements needed: -better screening -actually do what you say you will do( if you don't know how to redirect an Alzheimer's patient , don't say you can - return phone calls -when mistakes are made, admit them, and move on , don't misrepresent, or lie about them - follow up on what you say your going to do - there is no reason for someone to be spending hours/days trying to get you to do what you said you would do

Review for Atria South Setauket

The Atria has gotten so bad that I had to move my mother from this facility . The cleanliness , food and care are horrible . Activities shown on calendar almost always canceled or when my mom showed up no one was there to do the class/activity. There is a resident across the hallway from my mom who smokes so much the hallway is so smelly from smoke they had to put a air purifier in the hall it was plugged into the wall and a tripping hazard.

Acceptance Assessment Is Dangerous

My husband was assessed and accepted for the enhanced level of assistance by a social worker, not a nurse. Within two days of moving in, the overnight shift would not assist him with the Apex, telling him that they had bad backs, they didn't know how he got accepted for residence in the first place, it was ridiculous that they had to do this, he needed to do all of the work, they were not familiar with the Apex and he would have to tell them what they needed to do. When they did finally lift him, my husband repeatedly told them to put him in his wheelchair instead of the recliner in his room. They refused to do what he asked and put him in the recliner anyway, making it almost impossible to lift him again. The administration said their internal investigation determined that all the allegations were unsubstantiated, but they terminated an employee for saying some of the exact comments. Go figure.

Cleanliness, food, employees

My mom has lived in Manor Hills for a little over 1 year. Has a double room which she pays out of pocket. I have had to talk to too many people about getting her sheets changed, her bathroom cleaned and her main living area cleaned. The turnover of workers gives me an idea on why things don't get done. What's the reason for this? It must go back to the owner. I'm pretty sure there's not an RN in the building, not many LPN's. Just low paid aides. The food is the most unhealthy and awful food you could give them. Every week there's hot dogs at least twice. 1 day was grilled cheese with soup for dinner. Soup was crossed off. So, just grilled cheese. Pretty sure wasn't real cheese. Their hairdresser left months ago. Hasn't been replaced. Fingernails and toenails don't get touched. My mom is supposed to read the calendar to know when things are going on. She doesn't even remember there's a calendar there. The owner just wants the rooms filled. Not taken care of.

I placed my mother in there before covid hit. It was not my first pick but it is a place for older people to die. The staff is nasty, mean and not caring. The Director never returned calls and we spent more time in emergency room because they did not want to take care of her. Because of them being short staffed.

Don't send family their

This facility is down right ghastly. They have non working equipment, the front entrance door doesn't work. The food is horrible and shortage of staff to take care of residents. There are no nurses in the building to provide care, only non license personal and they give the medicine to the residents. They over charge for everything. There homeless people that live around the building. DO NOT GO THERE IS YOU VALVUE YOUR FAMILY THEY CAN'T KEEP STAFF HIGH TURN OVER. Amazing Caring Staff- Not Enough Caregivers

The people who worked with my loved one, were very kind/spectacular. The room, and place was great. There were major issues, that created a horrible experience. My loved one needed a lot of care, and there was a situation in which they did not handle very well. The food wasn't all that great. They were often short staffed, to care for 15 residents who had Dementia/Alzheimer's. In addition, they were not honest wih the number of caregivers that they had available. We were under the impression, that their would be two caregivers at all times.

Not a good community

The State needs to shut this community down. They have no staff to care for the residents. I recently moved my family member from this community and they are horrible to their employees. I’ve paid a ton of money for terrible, awful, disgusting food, no care from their staff. Managers don't know anyones name or come out of their office to meet family members or help staff. Grace Management ONLY cares about money and not the needs of the residents. You and your loved one will be better served to get private care in home or go to another community. If you need facts on any of these matters, just show up after hours. No one answers the phone and there's usually only 3 caregivers for 80+ residents. Since Grace Management took over this community and who they have employed as their Executive Director, they have ruined this once beautiful, fun community. Notice how ALL the positive reviews are for Elmcroft...what's that telling you?
