Good overall environment, mother overmedicated, inadequate security of residents

What I like about the place is that the environment overall is pretty good. I dislike that the doctors on staff overmedicated my mother, so she is no longer there. When she went in, she could walk and feed herself, and now she can no longer walk and feed herself. Since we moved her, she is doing better. Also, the day we moved her in, a resident with dementia was able to get out the window and walk off. Neighbors across the street called her a cab, which took her to another town miles away.

A Clear Picture

My parent has been at Elmcroft for a while now. The facility is beautiful but while the common areas are always clean getting the units cleaned is sometimes difficult. You have to ask several times. Daily activities are prominently displayed but if you are there at the given time they don't always occur. The menu is not always healthy, soup is often served as a first course and it is almost always high in sodium, not good for a heart patient. When you hear from the nursing director regarding a health issue or a concern you are not given clear data, but a "that's what the staff has told me" remark. If you are looking to place a parent who is fairly independent it would work well. For a parent who needs some assistance you might want to get in writing, clearly spelled out, what you will receive, before you commit. You are often presented with a service (such as medicine) that makes you wonder if Elmcroft is receiving a kick back. Look at the entire package carefully.

Not So Sure This Is A Memory Care Place

I toured this place amongst 7 other places. I really liked the high energy atmosphere and the social interaction. They have an ice cream area where residents can get ice cream at almost any time. The staff was great. They knew the names and spoke to each resident. They seemed to be very patient and good with the residents. The cost was the highest of all the places I looked at ($175/day). They did not accept my father because he was an exit seeker and they were afraid he would be trying to exit out the emergency door. I was taken aback by this because I had explained with great detail the situation with my Dad. This is the very reason he needed memory care instead of assisted living. I'm not sure they should be called memory care if they are not equipped nor can handle these type of things. After all isn't that what memory care is for???

Overall a nice place

My loved one stayed here for a brief time, and except for one specific problem they were a nice place overall. The facility was clean, the staff were friendly, and the services they provided all seemed good. However, my loved one had some specific dietary requests and they were not willing to work with her on those, and we had to find somewhere more accommodating in that aspect.

Initially we had a lot of problems getting her in there with the paperwork.

Initially we had a lot of problems getting her in there with the paperwork. Then we've had a lot of problems with heat in her room sometimes it's not working, though I am told it is being fixed now. The food is excellent. Certainly the administrative part could use some improvement. They progressive disclosure everytime I turned around it's something else to be done. They do have a lot of dementia patients and especially in the dining room that can complicate things. They could maybe have some separated dining.

Not A Good Experience

It was like my dad was in school. They kept writing him up and I felt like they were just making things up so that I would move him. Eventually it got to the point where they said he couldn't stay there anymore because they thought he needed a different level of care. Where he is now, at Sunrise, he is so much better! The director told me that all the staff were intimidated by my dad and they just want to work with the litte, cute old ladies and that's not right. There are all kinds of residents and if you have to deal with the men, then you have to deal with the men!

They were not prepared for us. Did not know there was a scheduled appointment. Did not meet with director. Does not matter. Not a good fit for us. She said it looked like a funeral home. I say, nice place but I would not want to live there. Even a person w/o short term memory problems could get lost.

Look elsewhere

I’m not sure what the issue is, but this place is not where you want your loved one living. They sometimes forget to bring meals, don’t return laundry timely, new employees weekly due to turnover, poor quality food, and poor leadership. Just keep looking, don’t go to this place.

He was "living" there for 3 months but spent all but about 48 hours of that time in the hospital or in PT rehab. We moved him out as we feel going forward he will need more care than they can or will provide. The staff was friendly in passing, but the two times he needed their help and called for them, no one came for over 45 minutes

Not recommended

The meals are absolutely substandard for older folks with weak teeth. Oatmeal was the standard dinner, there was no emphasis on nutrition. Providing protein shakes wasn't helpful, as they went untouched between visits. Our mother was out of bed in her wheelchair daily and sat in the same spot all day, where she developed a bedsore that we were told nursing was taking care of. It became so deep that she was hospitalized and subsequently succumbed to sepsis and passed away. So, no I would not recommend Tyler's Mill.

Good for the price

One level, right size overall. Upkeep and lack of follow up from facility when my mother has issues or needs medical type attention and follow up from the outside they say they take care of it all but they don't. My family still has to coordinate and make sure she gets to appointments or when she's needed x-rays or urine test or things like that they're not taking care of it. You get what you pay for.

Rough and disrespectful aides, dirty shower rooms and bathrooms

My Mom lived at Atria then it was sold and became the Village at Towngate, that is when things started to go downhill. My Mom had an aide that was very mean and disrepectful and gave rough showers in a filthy outdated shower room, trash overflowing the trash can and a dirty toilet usually filled with something smelley. The whole place uses the toilet in there. [date removed] my Mom suffered a heart attack while fighting in the shower with this aide. I did report her and nothing was done. She does not assist those who need help toileting at all and lets them sit in wet diapers and also won't come when the call button is pushed. Not a healthy place any more unless you can live with NO assistance. Management is lax and uncaring. Mom went to the hospital then rehab then hospice then died. No one from the place cared kept her mail and overcharged an extra two weeks.
