The grounds and interior are well taken care of however the staff does not give off a "friendly" vibe. We were rushed thru our tour a left alone in the conference room after we finished. We were told you have our number if you have any questions and then she was gone; never did she ask for Mom's name or our contact numbers. It did not leave me with a good feeling. How would Mom feel living there?

Service Concerns, but Social Connections Help

The dining room food is generally terrible with a zero on service. They may eat on site once a week. There are several neighbors who complain about the food. She's had two water leaks in her apartment. One from an upstairs neighbors flooded and the second from an outdoor source(heavy rain that their drain system could not handle). I was not satisfied with how the clean up was handled. Her mail is hit or miss. She needs to ask about packages that the senders say they were delivered and sometimes she gets mail and sometimes she doesn't. Her new driver's license was sent back to the State because it was undeliverable???? It took her weeks to get a new one so she had an expired license for a few weeks. Sometimes the cleaners come, sometimes they don't. She didn't hit the morning button once and nobody checked on her. She has met some friends here, which makes me happy.

Things to consider

I think it's important for people to know that the assisted living doesn't mix at all with independent living, and they are in lock down. We have placed Chuck at Ashleigh at Landsdowne. They don't separate these groups and they are not in lockdown until they reach memory care. This provides much more mental stimulation. Also, Ashleigh is much brighter and cleaner.

Great facility but the food needs to improve

Mom likes the activities and friendships she has made. The location is great and the facilities are maintained well. The food is awful. We keep thinking it will improve and occasionally it is good but the vast majority of the time it is very bad

It’s great if you like waiting an hour and half for your meal

My parents are at Waltonwood. The number one complaint I have heard heard over the last two years is how bad the food and food service are. The chef and wait staff are awesome. The problem seems to be the administration and corporate in that there is always an excuse, they don’t seem to care, and do nothing to make it up to residents that are paying top dollar for this food. I would have paid closer attention to this when touring facilities and I would things differently if I had it to do over again. Make sure the reviews you read are current. This was not a problem when they first opened. Additionally, my Mom has repeatedly had a roach problem in her kitchen.

My Experience at Waltonwood

Families need to be proactive about the care of their family member at Waltonwood. If there are issues they need to go to corporate immediately. The management at Waltonwood is not responsive to issues. Also, to help my sister before she was moved and while she was recuperating from a broken arm at Waltonwood, I contracted with Visiting Angels to help me. The Resident Care Director spoke to one of the Visiting Angels aides about what she could and couldn't do. This director never called her manager or me. Once again, my sister had to go to the hospital 3 times in one week for falls. No one at Waltonwood management spoke to us after she returned from the hospital for the 3rd time. Then, an Waltonwood aide took off my sister's caste without telling anyone before my sister was moved to another facility. There was an issue of experienced aides communicating to aides on different shifts on what and what not to do.

OK, but not great!

A pleasant facility! Pleasant staff! No community area to meet casually and chat! Breakfast twice a week! Lunch for sale! The bread was flimsy and all sandwiches fell apart!! Except for BLT! But they were often out of bacon! The dining room was pleasant but after 9 months we needed a change. The menus had few changes took too long to serve and was often cold! We were excited to have a nurse on call 24/7 and a visiting Dr 2 days every week! they had cancelled that program by the time we moved in! It was expensive and did not come through with promises! The traffic pattern in every direction was frustrating! We much preferred [community removed] and enjoy Chapel hill so much more than Raleigh????

Poor Food Quality

TlThe kitchen staff, especially needs help. Chefs, should you perfer yo call them chefs, have virtually no experience in cooking adequate food for seniors. The food is mostly served cold and way over seasoned. The menu looks wonderful, but when it comes out of the kitchen it's wise than dog food sometimes l. Thousands of dollars in good food for food preparation is ruined every day. On Christmas Day the find was prime rib, stuffing, ham, stuffing, and greenbelt casserole. Beans were raw and cold. Ham was cold and way over seasoned. Prime rib was so tough it tasted like shoe leather. I'm sure the menu was pre prepared a few days in advance for the Holiday but it was not properely prepared nor heated up well. Especially on a Holiday, like Christmas, food should be good. We frequently get meals prepared thos carelessly. Soodd, residents will get food poisoning if it has not already. People can't move due to extended contracts either.

Locked doors without a code are troublesome. There's often no one to answer the door. Laundry is not returned in a timely fashion, bathrooms not cleaned, floors not vacuumed regularly. Most of the staff is very friendly, but there are times some people are pushy, especially about masks. Most of the time staff is wonderful, ready to advise, and friendly. However, they are not always timely with medication. Most of the staff is helpful and very good with my loved ones. They seem to connect especially to one of my loved ones more than the other. Again, there are pushy staff members when I go to visit. The kitchen staff is extremely inefficient. This is an area of great concern. Meals are not very appetizing (tough meat, unsavory, etc.). The wait staff is not efficient when taking orders, delivering, or checking on meals. My loved ones eat in the dining room approximately 4 of the 21 meals provided for the week, but we are charged when we want to join them. Number one of the things about Waltonwood that both my loved ones enjoy! They are more affordable than other places I have toured. Kudos- I feel confident overall that my loved ones are cared for and are safe. Other things they're doing well: communication, readiness to improve, management staff (head nurse, staff coordinator, on site manager) all very knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to listen. Aides- ready to help when needed. Response time is appropriate when my loved ones push their buttons. Improvements needed- locked doors seem very unsafe. Office staff that allow entry/exit have short hours. I understand the need for security, but perhaps providing frequent visitors with a code to enter/exit after hours. God forbid a fire would occur! How could they remove all the residents on time? Properly train dining staff to be sure everyone at the table has water, utensils, and receives their meals at the same time. I would, and have, recommended Waltonwood to others. I believe most of their shortcomings are due to staff shortages which is an issue all over. Waltonwood welcomed my loved one with open arms even with their care needs. My loved one is wheelchair bound, has a catheter, and had a rather extensive wound from a foot amputation. My loved one has a visiting nurse that has addressed all of those needs. My loved one's health has improved tremendously since they have been at Waltonwood! The staff have done a great job monitoring my loved one's blood sugar, blood pressure and overall health. My other loved one's dementia has slowed and their countenance has improved greatly since they have been to Waltonwood. At their home, my loved one sat in a dark room all day staring out the window. At Waltonwood, my loved one walks laps (1& 1/2 miles daily), interacts with residents and staff, and has taken part in a few activities. This has really done wonders for my loved one.

They need to serve fresh food not food that is spoiled. They need to serve the food not ignore people's requests including simple things like water and coffee. The entire night and weekend shift is unfriendly, and act as though they are being put out with the simplest of tasks. It is not what it is portrayed to be when you sign the contract.

This facility is not equipped to deal with hospice patients.

Hospice patients deserve to have dignity in the final days when they are getting ready to pass. While some patients have issues communicating their needs, my father did not. He never lost his cognitive ability and was able to communicate until the transition. Be prepared that the staff looses patience with family members that make inquiries about the status of the patients health or requesting assistance for them. It is likely the staff will request that a single family member be able to relay information to other family members regarding health or other questions pertaining to the patient. While this facility is adequate for residents that can ambulate and take care of their day to day needs, it is not for someone who needs more skilled nursing. This facility lacks the knowledge of actual hospice care. It is not just the patient they have to support but also grieving family members who understand death is near and can have a degree of empathy during the entire process. Knowing what I know today, I would have transferred him to a different facility where he could have received the care he deserved. They have no qualms about banning family members from their facility when it becomes inconvenient for them.
