my review of Commonwealth Memory Care at Chesapeake

The community had a great knowledge of dementia, and they have a lot of activities available for the residence. Communication was not great after my loved one moved in, and it was hard to get information about my loved one. I am just disappointed that they did keep a better eye on my loved one.

Our experince with The Terrace

I would tell others that the administrative staff I worked with were excellent and very responsive. But the medical side of it, I did not think he got the quality of care that he needed while he was here. I do know they have new staff but it is taking time for them to rebuild what was lacking. I was not pleased with our experience but I would tell others to check it out and decide based on your loved ones needs are.

[date removed] spoke with [name removed]. Personal care home - provide all meals, transportation, they have all activities - GENESIS is OT and PT provider. Visiting physicans, room cleaning once a week, outdoor space - big terrace, figure 8 walking space, green space, vegetable garden maybe coming, they have 24 hour a day care givers and medication technicians, if care staff not there they call 911, they are hiring 2nd nurse from 3-11 with goal of having 24 hour nursing down the road. They take trash every day and make bed like a hotel. $ 3400 per month up to $ 4400 per month. 5 levels of care $ 500 to $ 2300. She has to get her own cable TV set up. She has to get Comcast set up. have WIFI. 70 personal care apts. and 45 memory care side residents. 103 total apartments. Sides are separate usually.

Don't Let the Downstairs Fool You

The downstairs of the community was always clean, when you went upstairs it wasn't clean to the hallway wise. The residents' room wasn't clean. I found my mom with human feces on her, with a breakfast tray next to her. Everything is good, except for the memory care. You don't have any single room, and the community told me they could handle memory care. She is then put in a room with another person. Her stuff was with the other resident in the room. The price went up, and there was no place for family in the room. The room always smelled like urine because of the roommate. When my mom had a TV because the beds had to be side by side, and my mom couldn't see it. The rooms were small. The staff was overworked, and had more rooms than they could cover.

Not as good as they used to be

This place was great when my parents moved in but has gone downhill considerably in the last 3-4 years. Use to get a smile from EVERY staff member, now the front desk barely acknowledges you. Case manager [name removed] is useless, don't even know if she still works there the communication with family is so bad. Staff turn over frequent and I consider these and other issues a reflection of the administration.

Few to zero activities. Filthy rooms and bathrooms.

Four directors in 20 months. Poor communication with families. One bingo game all summer. This was the only activity. When there were activities it was bingo everyday. Residents have rarely seen the activities director and for several months they did not know who she was. Room and bathroom not cleaned in at least a month. Toilet filthy week after week. Replaced carpet. New carpet too plush for wheel chair. Transitioning from carpet to floor and vice versa is extremely difficult with wheel chair and a trip hazard with walker.

We were not very impressed with our tour of this community. There was a strong overwhelming smell of urine in the upstairs area of the community. Also the temperature was a very high, and that did not make the smell any better. The staff was respectful, and kind. Everyone was friendly to my family, and I. However this was not the community for my mother, and her needs.

I would not recommend this community.

The community seemed understaffed during mom's short stay here. The food was edible. It is not an active community. There was a bad smell at the community, however I do think they tried to keep it clean. There is not a lot of grounds for the residents to enjoy. We had to supply everything except the sheets and towels. When we moved mom out they said they were not able to locate the bed we brought in for her. We did not have a good experience with this community.

Not recommend

My mother would have been in Cardinal 3 years this January 2018 but was told she had to leave this past October. My mother started out in Independent Living and things were pretty good there. She then had a few falls and her dementia was slowly getting worse so we were told by[Removed], the director of nursing that our mom should move to the Assisted Living side. We asked how long our mom could stay there. We were told until the end unless mom needed to be hoisted because of weight or if she did not have a DNR. Well mom was 100 lbs and yes she did have a DNR but she still was pushed out. Mom contracted MRSA and was sent to Kennedy Hospital, now Jefferson. The hospital treated her and told us she could return to Cardinal, Cardinal refused to take her back. They said it was to protect the other residents. The Drs. at Kennedy and the administration both spoke with Cardinal Village telling them there was no reason our mother could not return. They told Cardinal if every resident was tested for MRSA more than half would test positive that MRSA is in a lot of nursing homes. Cardinal still refused her and the hospital and us had to force mom into Kennedy Rehab. She was there longer than usual and necessary because Cardinal continued to fight us and told us mom needed more care. Bottom line is, yes she needed more care and they did not want to give it to her. Our question was then why did you tell us she could stay until the end if this wasn't going to be the case. Our guess was that now mom was Medicaid and they weren't getting as much money as they did before. All her money was gone. They now could put a private pay resident in my mom's apartment and get more money. I have to say my mom's nurses were very nice and we really did not have many issues with nursing. Although her 6:30 am medicines were always found on the floor because mom throw them out when the nurse left. Obviously they just handed them to her and left or she [Removed] them out when they left. At night the nurses pretty much made sure she took them. Mom's bathroom and kitchen was cleaned very little. I would clean both floors at least twice a week and they were very dirty. I showed the nurses and they told me to tell housekeeping, nothing ever changed. This is all behind us now as our mom is in Kennedy Nursing home. I would never suggest Cardinal Village to anyone, we believed we were deceived by [Removed] more than once.

downhill in a hurry

Several months ago the Greenfield location in Cockeysville was good. Since then, they changed the staff - or should I say eliminated many of the staff and replaced them with less people. The care has been deplorable since the new administrator took over. Its been about a month and many of the families are making other arrangements for their loved ones. There should be plenty of vacancies shortly if not already. Think twice about moving someone you care about there.

Have visit this community off and on since Springtime [date removed], with various friends and associates that had taken up residence here. My review is that it has gone way down hill in maintenance, staffing, and overall vibe. It once was a vibrate community that you could tell the staff enjoyed being there; now it is a "dark", weird, unfriendly place that people are just clocking in to get paid. My friend recently told me they would be leaving they were so unhappy with care. And prices have risen from their initial quotes I would not recommend sending a Loved one to this location

Poor Response to Health Hazard

Beware of bed bugs! My mother had a serious stroke this past Labor Day weekend. She returned to her apartment after a month recovering in the hospital and at rehab to find her apartment infested with bedbugs. An exterminator was sent one week after the infestation was reported. There here was no folow up. My mother’s repeated requests for maintenance to remove an infested sofa and area rug were ignored. Caregivers quit because of allergic reactions to bed bug bites.I had to move my mother to a hotel when the infestation became so severe, her apartment was uninhabitable. She lived there while I renovated my home to make it accessible for her to move in. It’s astonishing to me how little was done to address a public health hazard. My mother had to discard thousands of dollars worth of her possessions, and her requests for fair compensation were ignored. If my mother’s apartment was so severely infested, there's no doubt other apartments and public areas are also affected.
