Small rooms and a bit dark

The lady that took us on a tour was very nice and very knowledgeable. The place was older, probably built in the late 70s or 80s, and the lighting hadn’t been updated so it wasn’t as bright in there as we would’ve liked. I didn’t really think my Mom would like that. The rooms were smaller than a few other places that we had looked at as well.

Nice Community For the Right Person

My tour of this community was okay, but it appeared to be a community for someone who just needs a little bit of care. My parents needed more care. The apartment they showed me was nice, but designed for someone who still was independent and wants to live near others, instead of a big home. (You furnish a bedroom and living room and there is a bath and kitchenette with a small refrigerator & microwave.) They have a big main dining room, but I felt it would be overwhelming for my parents and nobody would be aware of their eating. The facility had easy access in and out, and I wasn't very comfortable with that. I wasn't shown the dementia care area. The pricing was alacarte ~ pay extra for helping with showers or distribution of medication. This is a nice community, but not the one for us.

Still Working Out Things

There are some things about this community that are great, and other things I feel needs improvement. I do feel that they are understaffed, and need more aids on the weekends. My aunt does seem to be happy here, but it is still a work in progress for us here. There have been a few incidents where I didn't feel she was being cared for well. I'am having a meeting with the director too address these concerns. The nurses are good with communicating to me any problems. The meals are great. Overall it is still a work in progress, and hopefully the care improves.

Nice Management Team

The management is wonderful, their hearts are in the right place but I feel they need to make improvements in the memory care. The staff seem to do a good job but I feel there is no "care" or high-level interaction. I was told they have a program that shows all residents pictures of their loved ones in movie-mode but I have yet to see this. I also feel they are under staffed and this may be the cause of not giving high quality care. I thought I picked out the best community based on what they explained to me but I have not seen all the greatness from this community. It has been a little over a month since my mom has been here and I hope, hope they improve.

Decreased quality in regards to service and living quarters

Forest Hills has been bought out by another company and many people have moved out for various reasons. A big complaint is the food and they said they needed to cut back. They have also cut back on workers and changed nursing. My mother in law also wants to move and we are not willing to start from the beginning again. Most of the people moved to the to the place in Mt Washington, where she was originally denied, because she need more care.

Be proactive in your look

I looked at the facility several times and I thought it would be a good facility, but his time here was not the best but that was nobodies fault. They put him in an apartment that he was not equipped to be in. They were in the remodeling process and it was not livable yet. We were not allowed to help move him in either and they made some promises that they were not able to keep at the time. The staff members here were fantastic and a lot of them were really trying to do their best during these circumstances. Before the pandemic started, I was extremely happy with it, it was very clean and the room we were going to move him in at that time was great. I would tell others to be proactive and really ask questions.

Not Getting Our Money Worth

Overall my father seems to be doing okay since his move to this community. For the most part I do not feel we are getting our money worth from this community. I do have many minor concerns that I feel I should not have, since we are paying so much money. I feel they are understaffed. My father isn't getting quite the level of care I would like. The cleanliness could be better. The staff is friendly for the most part, but I do not feel this community is worth what we are paying.

Would not recommend

I thought this was a nice place when it was owened by Emeritus, but when it was purchased by Brookdale things started to go downhill. I started noticing a lot of oversights in both the care and cleanliness of the facility, and the issues were not resolved even after I pointed them out to the staff. Since the service was on the decline, and the price on the rise, I chose to move my loved one to another facility.

Good & bad

Quality of care seemed pretty good - however, last few days there left questions. Unexplainable situations - our mother went to the hospital & died. The process of closing out the account was cumbersome, lengthy, very frustrating. No disagreement on what needed to happen or the amounts --- just incredible delays. This involved the corporate HQ operation.

Not what we were promised

Overall, this has been a terrible experience. They have been through three directors of nursing, and three executive directors since October. The clinical staff has turned over several times as well. They are also on their fourth chef since October. I would not recommend this place to anyone. I have asked my dad to move, but he has made friends there and doesn't want to leave them. The only reason we chose them is because they made a special exception for him to have his elderly dog with him. Otherwise, I found much better places that would have been a better fit.

Horrible experience with uncaring and rude staff.

Unfortunately, my experience with Maristone staff was nothing short of dreadful on multiple occasions. My mother had a stroke, and I needed to find respite care for her. Initially, I placed her in the memory care unit, but that only lasted one day due to the terrifying and unacceptable conditions. I then moved her to the assisted living side, where I visited daily to keep an eye on the staff and how they treated the residents. Early on, I noticed staff members displaying eye-rolling and frustration when residents asked for assistance. I would never recommend anyone place their loved ones in the care of Maristone. I have witnessed several other troubling issues with other residents, but I only want to speak about my personal experiences.

Not Good for Assistive living needs

The grounds are clean enough and there are some fun activities but if your loved is not independent then this is not the place for them. If assistance is needed it is not uncommon to have to wait for an hour or more for the aids to come and help. They will assist with 2 showers a week. If the resident asks for one on another day, they will be told it is not their day, even if they have incontitent issues. I was requested to be the contact person by my loved one. However, when I contacted them with a care problem, neither the Executive director or head nurse would acknowledge my emails, text or phone calls. The cost is fine but you loved one will not receive the level of care they are paying for.

Not recommended

My loved one was previously a resident at Maristone of Franklin and the overall experience was terrible. I would absolutely not recommend Maristone of Franklin to anyone. Their staff in the memory care unit has no idea how to care for persons with dementia. They do not communicate with the family until the situation escalated. The management told me that their staff was employed by the company, but the ones I met were agency or brand new hires. In the four days my father was there, he had his clothes changed one time. I asked about showering and incontinence care and they said they had completed those tasks. He had one outfit in dirty clothes hamper. He also was filthy when I removed him from the facility.

Do not recommend

My mother was at Maristone for 7 years. We saw many changes in management and turnover but the current one 2023-24 has been the worst. Several state investigations this year alone. They let her lay in the floor thru the night after she fell because they do not check on residents for over 12 hours after meds are passed at dinner. This happened twice and I was not notified either time. Director tried to cover it up. Crazy turnover in staff. Seven directors of nursing in one year because of mismanagement. Hallways frequently smell like urine. Food is not good. Nightmare and law suit waiting to happen.

Memory Care

I had a family member in memory care and another in the assisted living. I tried to be there as much as possible after I seen the poor staffing they had, it was sad to see only 1 care giver in memory care by herself trying to keep up with all the residents, some of them wandering around and going into other residents rooms, she had to get them up, toilet them, feed them 3 meals, give showers, do laundry, take out trash and trying to prevent falls of which I seen happen frequently it was sad, do her paperwork and then had to put some in bed before she left from her 12 shift. I never seen her take a break not to even eat her own lunch. And not one time did I see anyone help her or to even come over to see if she needed anything. I am very observant and noticed this seemed to be a daily thing, she looked ragged, beat and worn out by the end of her shift. Obviously management doesn't care that's clear about the staff or residents. At times I tried to help, I felt sorry for them.
