Mom new resident

The staff and administrators made it very easy to get my mom moved in. She's been there approximately a little over a month, I believe The food and facility are very clean and quite good. However, I do think some of the prices for the extra services like medication and showering are quite expensive and potentially not worth the value . I did experience a nonresponse to my phone calls concerning certain issues around rent and the two months in advance which resulted in finding out the first month went to a general community rent which I believe was not explained as thoroughly and when the question was answered basically said read the contract .

A Work in Progress

The facility is 14 months old and beautiful, like an elegant 5 star hotel, with activities all day long. The staff generally is solicitous and helpful. However, there are many operational problems which lead to unpleasant resident experiences. For instance, the sales person we dealt with was new, and did not inform us or misinformed us of procedures, which got us off to a bad start with other departments. The Bristal procedure is to not provide an itemized receipt for ones initial payment of over $10,000, which seems [not right]. The resident contract omits key operational policies, such as vitamins are considered medication and must be ordered, controlled, and dispensed by the staff, or that OTC "medications" must be dispensed as prescription if a prescription version is available, raising the costs to residents. We are being overcharged for staff care in excess of what is being used, and The Bristal does not justify their care need determination by providing us with the actual amount of hours staff provides services, and for which services. Although the food generally is good, the dining and kitchen staff are unable to deliver resident dining orders accurately and timely. Residents often wait an hour for their meals. The Bristal is an assisted care facility with few driving residents, though they do not provide transportation to doctors, despite a major medical facility just 6 miles away. I am hopeful some of these glitches will be ironed out over time, and services will be more professional.

I feel like it's a beautiful shell.

The people don't clean the rooms very well at all, they don't do anything extra to even find someone if you need them. There are a lot of people there but they don't seem to do a lot, for extra services you have to pay extra. You have to pay extra for everything. I feel like it's a beautiful place but I feel like it's a shell that's all it is is a beautiful shell. The activities seem like more than there really are. They do have some different things to do, but not what it looked like at first glance. They say they have a five star chef but it really is like cafeteria food. They have a new director, who hasn't been there long so maybe he will be able to make some improvments. The people are friendly and very nice. You are not allowed to have a motorized wheelchair.

My experience with The Bristal

The Bristal was good before covid but since then has gone downhill. Management is poor and not professional or respectful. They did not help me out at all when trying to move my loved one out and were very difficult to work with, they did not seem to care at all. Over on the memory care side there were absolutely no activities for the residents, they were all always just sitting there. I would not recommend this community to anyone.

Rates have gone up! No longer affordable

My mom has been in the lynbrook facility for three years. Her life savings have almost been depleted. I was told several months ago that medicade was going to take over. Instead, I received a notice that the rates per day are going up an enormous amount. Unless your loved one has a healthy bank account, look elsewhere!

Originally I was very happy with the Bristal. The community seemed vibrant and the rooms are spacious for the price. I left a deposit and our experience completely changed. The building is very large and there are rooms very far from the elevators. The only room that was available was a one bedroom (we wanted a studio and we were originally told by the director of sales that if a studio was not available, we would be offered a one bedroom at the studio price until a room opened up) as far from the elevator as could be, which was too far from my dad to walk. We also noted on both tours that the floors needed vacuuming and had litter, lint, etc in many areas throughout the facility, and I did not see housekeeping actively working either time. I was told that the Bristal does not send out staff to do pre-admission assessments and I would have to bring my dad to them, which is impossible because he is in a subacute rehab in central NJ. So he would be moving in and I would be signing a contract without knowing the level of care that he would need. I was also told that the Bristal charges a pet fee of $1,500, which was not the case in other facilities I looked at. The director of sales has been out sick for the past week and there has been no one to respond sufficiently to our questions about discharge planning and moving in. Today we called and left a message to tear up our deposit and decided to go with another smaller facility in our area. I am very disappointed as I thought the community would be very good for my dad, since independent living residents are there with the assisted living residents. But the lack of responsiveness from the staff was just not acceptable, especially in this stressful time in our lives. They just didn't seem to care.

Not very welcoming or compassionate or caring.

It's brand new, so everything was beautiful. The apartments were large and spacious, they had exercises and activities, the food seemed excellent. They have memory care just like other places, and different levels of care. They don't look at the individual and whether or not they have behavioral or wandering issues. It seems they just don't want anyone who is less than desirable in their picture perfect area. They don't care about a long marriage, they want the extra money, if they wanted to stay together they would have both had to do to the memory care area. That was unacceptable for them. They weren't very welcoming, and didn't seem to care about much besides their bottom line, and their appearance.

The buildings looked very nice - still under construction. It may have been the sales rep present on the day i went -- hated it. She did not seem aware that older people would be living there. She would be better suited to sell time shares at a vacation destination. She stared at me with a blank face when I asked if the Bristal maintained or had relationships with providers of services elderly might need. No transportation provided for anything. .. .
