Improved Communication

As with all facilities when promises that are made, follow through is very important. Part of the condition of his residency was that transportation would be provided to visit his wife's grave site every Saturday, but when the first Saturday arrived, they said they do not provide transportation period on the weekends. It seemed like that discrepancy was kind of egregious to me.

Great staff, but boring place

The staff at Hanna Oaks is wonderful. Management, therapists, and caretakers are very friendly and strive to please residents and family alike. Some days there is a strong urine odor, otherwise they keep the facility, including resident's rooms, very clean. They are very responsive to suggestions. The parking lot was poorly lit and uncomfortable at night. I dropped a note in the suggestion box for lighting and it was corrected the following week. My biggest complaint (also the complaint of my family member) is that it is boring for the residents. There is an Activities Coordinator who schedules at least two activities a day. They are so very uninteresting: Bingo, classic movies, rememberence, prayer, chair exercises, etc. Trivia sounds the most interesting, but I haven't witnessed how it is. A previous resident moved because they were horribly bored. They did have a cook-out last week, which I hear was fun. Hopefully they get more creative in the activities to challenge and stimulate the residents more. I also think an exercise room would be beneficial for an energy/therapy outlet.

A nice place

It's a nice place. People are very friendly. My mother says the food is up and down. I think they all cost a lot. The value is fair. Overall, it was a pretty good experience for my mom. They have activities here. They take them out shopping. They have games for them and people come in and play music. They do an excellent job at taking care of my mother. The Brookdale Bluewater Bay is a nice place for mom.

Smaller is Better

Your loved one needs at least 4-6 weeks to adjust to the environment and so do you! The staff is very supportive of both the family and residents. It is definitely a family atmosphere: are there kinks, yes, but I think you have to work through them, like any other family. Communication is the key with everyone from the top on down. We give the positive and the negative. We know most of the staff and residents by name and they know us. All our concerns have been addressed and information is free flowing. Our loved one is now too busy to talk on the phone and remarks how everyone is like family! We visited 6 facilities , this was the last one and knew immediately that this was the right choice. I think it's a big plus that it's a small facility and we are very happy with our choice.

Nice place, overall

My loved one was only here a brief time before increased care needs necessitated a move, but our experience here was a good one! They've got a great staff here, everyone was very friendly. The rooms seemed a little on the smaller side for the price, but it wasn't a deal breaker.

Everything is great about this community! The price is high, but all of the options in the area were around the exact same price, so it's comprable. My loved one hasn't complained about the food. It's not gourmet, but there's nothing wrong with it. They do lots of special things too - they go out to lunch, go get slushies, take trips to get pie... There was an issue with some healthcare related tests, where they really just didn't happen. We will give them the benefit of the doubt though, and just hope it doesn't happen again. Our choice came down to two options, and the courtyard and outdoor area really set this one apart from the other!

Nice place, overall

We toured this location when we were looking into options for our loved one. We were very pleased with everything here! The staff were friendly and professional, and it looked like the care and activities they provided would be very food! One problem we noticed was that although the common areas and front entrance were nice, the hallways and rooms looked a bit shabbier, and could probably use recarpeting.

They were a little institutional.

They were a little more institutional than the one we chose. If you had a severe stroke then it would be a good situation, because they were very well supervised. It seemed more medical. If you do need that level of care then this would be a good location.

Good Activities and Food

My mother hasn't been there long. She was there for about a day and a half and had to go to the hospital and then she was back for another day and had to go to the hospital agian. Hopefully she'll be able to go back and stay. It's a pretty good value. It's clean and there's stuff for people to do. In the morning they get everybody out of thier rooms and get together and socialize. My mom won't get out on her own but once she's out there she's fine. They have therapy type stuff and take them shopping if they're up for it. She had a couple of meals there and she likes the food.

Overall would recommend

I think they promise a lot & don't always deliver on that promise. Very friendly sometimes too much/fake. Meals look good, eating times are a bit early (4pm for dinner). What activities they have are nice but I don't consider a movie or a dish of ice cream an activity. I think something more low key but moving your body would be an activity. And value was fine but they just raised the rates. I'm not sure what I expected, but because I'm a nurse I think I anticipated a little more. The communication isn't always great but maybe no place is any different. Mom can't really tell me since she's in memory care. This has been a very difficult & overwhelming few months & transition. Again, not sure what I expected or anticipated but I just have felt a little lost . It is very helpful knowing the girls there are very kind & sweet.
