Before you get carried away by the lobby, check out the apartments themselves. Note that they do not have central air/heat. Instead, they are cooled and heated by cheap motel-type wall units whereby the temperature is adjusted not by a thermostat but by buttons merely indicating cooler or warmer. The building itself has central air/heat, but not the individual apartments, making it impossible to set the temperature at a comfortable level without jumping up all the time to readjust the buttons (even in the middle of the night). That fact alone removed The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay from my list.

When we first found smokey springs I thought it was the best place on earth for my mother. After the lease was signed and they had our money things changed. Lots and lots of promises but few were kept. Several attempts to communicate but we were ignored. We are stuck to a 90 day commitment with a $4500 community fee to pay on top of the rent. I can't recommend this place for your loved ones. My mother moved in today and wasn't greeted or informed about meal times or anything. When I called they were overjoyed to hear that she moved in and promised to greet her and notify her of the meal menu and times. It is now almost 9pm and she hasn't seen anyone yet. I am less than impressed at this time. I remain hopeful that things will change. If they do I will re-write a review.

I have lived at Whealdon Estates for five months. I love the managers, but the food is awful! If the food was better, I'd have no gripes about Whealdon Estates at all. Had I known what the food was like before moving here, I'd have chosen some other place. So much food is wasted because it is unpalatable. They have nothing for the diabetic (which I am). I furnish 95% of my food and yet I still have to pay what everyone else pays Whealdon Estates.

The food is really bad - and they force you to pay it meals whether you eat it or not. Funny how when people are forced to pay - like it or not - they have no incentive to make it good. Good luck with a repair request, you may as well figure out a way to fix it yourself. I had a faulty electrical outlet for the last four months. False fire alarms go off a lot and no one tells us anything about why, what's broken, what's done to get it fixed. There are a lot of fed up tenants looking elsewhere - if River's Edge don't fix some of this stuff, they're looking at a mass exit. Don't move here.

Not a good experience. The regional VP of operations got involved to refund my money. Don't push people to pay deposits and rent until all the financials have been worked out. Then, give refunds if the financials don't work out, especially if it's only been a few days and nobody moved in.

I've never lived anywhere with this many issues. We have false fire alarms frequently, they terrify the residents and traumatize the pets, and it takes upwards of 10 minutes to get it shut off. Things in the building that have broken and taken ages to get fixed: The washers, the dryers, the transport van, the Xfinity. Then you have repairs for the individual apartments that are often ignored. Won't come up with a hurricane evac plan for those who are dependent on their transportation. The food they serve is bad - if you were served this food in a restaurant, you'd send it back. We have constant turnover in management, but I'm hoping this iteration of new management can get things up to speed.

After only 2 months, I was told I had to hire a full time caregiver. She was to much for them to control. I rehired ABC and brought her home.

Administration did not disseminate information appropriately, follow up to assure care was taking place, or when necessary contact family timely. To assure things are being done family needed to stay vigilant and share information with each shift and new employee. Even with numerous reminders some services were never put in place. Staff interactions with residents demonstrated limited patience and lack of understanding of this population. Without repercussion, staff was permitted to curse and talk negatively of residents. Rather than relieving the family of responsibilities, more was put upon them.

I’m getting indigestion after every meal. I’m having to take Tum’s and Pepto-Bismol and the staff is not as friendly as I expected it to be. I’m having to pay additional food going out and buying food that my stomach can take.

We were lied to by The Barclay representatives selling care for memory care patients. We were in a bind to quickly find memory care for our father who was living in AFL and had wandered off at night in the cold in only his pjs. They told us we would find great care there and that he would be "cared for like they care for their own parents". He received very little care and was put in quarantine on the incorrect belief that he had c-diff as soon as I gave them our notice we were leaving which was 5 days after we moved in. I had the director of nursing telling me how horrible the working conditions had been for her in only 5 months she had been there to the point she was leaving to go back to her old job. Too bad she had not told us this in the pressure sales meeting we had with her in it. The staff was suppose to be constantly walking the floor of the unit because "you will find we do not have a nursing station here", but I always found them sitting on couches in the activity room.

1. This rating is based on their actions after my father passed away. They allowed ppl into his room to steal from him. Then they had the nerve to say owed a balance bc he didn't give a 30 day notice. 2. The common areas were clean but they lacked in keeping my dad's room clean. We were prepared to come every week to clean but they offered. They were hit or miss some days. 3. For the most part the ppl who worked there were nice. The residents were very polite and friendly. 4. The food was hit or miss. There were moments when my dad had to order food for delivery to his room and they forgot about him. 5. It was hit or miss. 6. He used to say the quality went down. It wasn't as good as it was when first moved in. 7. They were creative in keeping the seniors busy and active. 8. It was cost met the quality of the facility if that makes sense. However, I would not recommend this place to anyone based solely on the fact that they stole from a deceased person. Very unacceptable

The facility is gorgeous but this place is grossly mismanaged. There isn’t a single person on staff that cares about getting a timely response to you. I have been waiting for almost a year for a rent refund following my mother’s death. Mediocrity would be giving the team the benefit of the doubt.

The woman who toured us around the community was very negative. She told us it would not be a good fit for my dad and that we should look elsewhere because he is not in a wheelchair or needing a lot of help yet. I appreciate the honesty but it was not a positive experience. Apparently the residents here are more like nursing home patients. The rooms are very small so this makes sense.

They need more staff! They should have come through with what they said when they were selling me on this. Need more days to take you to the doctor. The laundry rooms have crummy washers and dryers and we only can use at certain times. Need to empty garbage more. Laundry room smells horrible.

They indicated that they could take care of my mother as her health deteriorated, but when she had emergency GI surgery and had a colonoscopy bag they refused to take her back. We had to then scrambled to find a skilled nursing facility.

I wouldn't recommend this place at all. Staff is always a challenge to find. Doesn't return calls No-one to communicate with for any problems. The facility is beautiful but everything they tell you when looking there is absolutely not true. They don't care about the residents they don't check on them no one talks to the residents or helps them with anything. My mother passed and was in the hospital for 10 days, not one person contacted me to see how she was and it took 3 days after her death of me calling to let them know. I had to physically go in and just walk into the business administrator office because I couldn't get a phone call back to set up an appointment. Still haven't gotten a call and it's been since the [date removed].

What got us was that it offered everything they wanted in one shiny new place. Unfortunately, the place is falling apart. But, still, it looked nice on the tour. Food and staffing, I suppose, were the two biggest issues. But there were lots of major issues, including billing errors and care lapses. It's was a costly error in more ways than simply money.

My mother has been living there for nearly 2.5 years now. When it opened, the place was (and still is) beautiful. But to be honest, the way the corporate office manages the community is absolutely detrimental to the residents. Office politics seem to be at play in personnel changes and the quality of care and the food especially is horrible. After the first ED left, who was wonderful, responsive, caring, and committed to the quality of the community they have now placed [name removed] in that role. She has zero experience, does not return phone calls, makes poor hiring decisions, and knows nothing about resident care. The Director of Sales is her best friend. And the Resident Care Director is not a nurse. In fact she is not even a CNA. They have let the staff that are trouble makers run them ragged. The food has been terrible for some time. They promoted a director of Culinary Services that doesn't bathe and cannot cook anything other than cafeteria food. All for show.
