A Place for Mom has scored The Blake by QSL Management with 7.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 333 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, The Blake by QSL Management has 1,571 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.1 out of 5.
My mother has been living there for nearly 2.5 years now. When it opened, the place was (and still is) beautiful. But to be honest, the way the corporate office manages the community is absolutely detrimental to the residents. Office politics seem to be at play in personnel changes and the quality of care and the food especially is horrible. After the first ED left, who was wonderful, responsive, caring, and committed to the quality of the community they have now placed [name removed] in that role. She has zero experience, does not return phone calls, makes poor hiring decisions, and knows nothing about resident care. The Director of Sales is her best friend. And the Resident Care Director is not a nurse. In fact she is not even a CNA. They have let the staff that are trouble makers run them ragged. The food has been terrible for some time. They promoted a director of Culinary Services that doesn't bathe and cannot cook anything other than cafeteria food. All for show.

My mother in law had an appointment last [date removed] to tour the facility with her husband and my husband along with myself. Something came up and she could not make it so she asked that my husband and I go in her place. My husband contacted [name removed] first thing Monday morning, [date removed] to let her know, which he did not speak to her but left a voicemail. [name removed] never contacted him back. On [date removed] my husband and I showed up to New Haven 10 minutes early for the appointment that was scheduled at 11 am. [name removed] was unavailable but would be there, which was fine because we were early. We continued to wait till 11:25, we decided that with the lack of concern for a potential tenant that was a good sign to leave. We have found that River Park has the concern and care needed for her and her husband.

Do not put your loved one there. They need to improve with everything. We picked this community, because A Place for Mom suggested it and it was in close proximity to my brothers home. Unless there have been significant improvements in the last few months I would not recommend you send anyone there. It is a new beautiful facility but there is no consistency or accountability amongst staff, constant employee turnover, contract employees not administering medicine appropriately or at all.

This facility needs to be closed, renovated and cleaned. Most of the residents are rude and uncaring much like the staff. It seems to be operated much like a hospital. It’s a you get what we give you attitude! I’m so sorry that my loved one had been placed in this facility. Hopefully, this review will keep you from putting your loved one there.

Parents moved in high expectations. After 2 weeks they moved out. Many of the things that were part of the services were not done. Maintenance of the building poor, no one ever came in to clean their apartment, pool broken more times than working, golf simulator never worked. [name removed] has been promised since the place opened. The meal we were served as potential residents was nothing like the meals they got once the moved in. Some of the staff are very nice and tried, but it was not their responsibility. When we talked with folks there before moving in, they all said it was great. The people we spoke with turned out to be memory care residence. Very disappointed. Very costly. The director never returned calls or emails when we tried to get things resolved.

The housekeeping is horrible as 3 days in a row the floors had the same tray on the floor. (Crumbs from nabs and paper underneath bed). Feces were in the toilet and my aunt was unable to get up to go to potty without assistance. One night I spent the night and needed assistance but nobody ever answered the call button.(I went to the nurse's area two hours later and the buzzer was still going off and the buzzer for them to answer was behind the nurse's cart on the floor behind the cart.). Another night that I stayed with her, the nurse's assistant was asleep at one of the craft tables in the hallway and I had to speak to her three different times before she responded. She then laid her head down to go back to sleep. My aunt was sent to the hospital to check out her pain, I called the hospital and she was not listed - called to speak to nurse numerous times but could not get an update for over a month of calling. The doctor released her to go to a rehab and The Blake had no record of where she was. The doctor finally called to let me know where she was located. She was out for over 2 months before they found her not in her room. Truly disappointed as I had heard so many good things about this place but it was a horrid experience for my aunt and all her nieces and nephews. Truly disappointed!

This facility is severely understaffed, so much so, that the same workers who are responsible for cleaning up trash and fecal material are the same workers serving food to residents moments later. They only have one maintenance worker; spread so thin he can’t possibly keep up with routine maintenance and repairs needed on outdated equipment simultaneously. They have a front desk but no front desk secretary; the phone just rings, nonstop. Washington Commons is suppose to be a residential retirement community but many of the residents obviously suffer from dementia and wander around soiled and clueless. They need assisted care by nurses and nursing assistants but those responsibilities are forced upon the housekeepers. This place should be investigated for this. The housekeepers are essentially restaurant workers/food handlers, nursing assistants, and janitors. This ship is sinking. I would personally recommend a state-run facility over Washington Commons in the state it is in now.

Several of the services advertised here do not exist, making Holiday liable for fraud. "Three Chef Prepared Meals Daily" is inaccurate, as food is prepared (poorly) by random staff members. Meals will feature food fit for a prison facility or perhaps mental institution: a "sandwich" of white bread and sliced meat, no condiments. Food with an odd chemical taste. Burnt food. All served by a staff, some of which are nice, others who think it's cute to talk back to helpless seniors paying their life savings to stay here. Likewise, the "Complimentary Scheduled Transportation" does not exist, as they have been without a driver for several months. "Maintenance" is also fraudulent, as they have a maintenance person who seems to spend most of the day chatting in the lobby and refuses to assist residents with basic help. On the plus side, it's a quiet facility with some nice people, but the cons are far outweighed by management that clearly does not know how to run a facility.

We moved here with high hopes for this new facility based on their promises. Unfortunately, Anthology does not deliver on their services or support for your loved one. They do not perform the services they claim to provide such as clean the apartments weekly or do the laundry weekly. Food is hit or miss. COVID is rampant because the staff doesn't where a mask (in a healthcare facility where it is a state requirement). To go with their poor performance, they are continuously raising rates. This is a bate and switch setup - do your loved one a favor and find a better place. Don't be swayed by the flashiness they will show you.

As for the cleanliness, roaches are a definite gross factor. As for the value for cost, it doesn't matter how inexpensive a place is if they can't control vermin. We've moved our loved one to a different facility.

I would recommend you look elsewhere for your loved ones for a community. There has been a lot of turnover of staff at the local level. You pay for a lot more than you are getting. The community seems to be disorganized. The staff communication with the family wasn't great at first. Things have started to get better with communication, only because we have spoken several times to management to get my concerns accomplished.

Do not be fooled by the new facility and amenities. Every day another administrator leaves. The nursing director, executive director and a few nurses all abruptly resigned as of last week. There is no qualified executive manager running this place. The majority of the nursing assistants are agency/contract workers. Even with the astonishingly high turnover rate in their nursing/clinical unit, they continue to accept new asst living residents. Management is a hot mess. They have multiple overlapping and processes for medication administration. They won't directly answer any questions. Multiple residents have had issues with their emergency call pendants functioning and Anthology refuses to address residents/family member's questions about the issues. If you need "any" level of assistance, look elsewhere....

Room cleanliness is unacceptable. Constant staff changes. Very poor communication. My fathers personal belongings always missing. ( and this is because of other residents walking into his room unsupervised) My father will use the bathroom if taken, needs to be on a schedule. He is constantly wetting himself because I’m not being taken to the bathroom enough. Would definitely not recommend this facility.

I would suggest you avoid The Blake at all costs. The staff are not attentive, communicative. They don't answer the phone or questions or concerns. They pretend they have activities such as placing calendars up. However, they allow the memory care residents wander the halls and not direct them into activities. They were short staffed due to the pandemic. The staff don't try to reach out to the doctor to see what could be causing issues with the residents. They don't talk to the family about our loved one's concerns. The community was supposed to be assisting with bathing, medication management, meals, activities, housekeeping, laundry and more for my loved one. The memory care only has access to a tv room and in a secured area. It feels like a warehouse of residents with memory care. It seems the staff get tired of answering the same questions over and over again, so they stop answering the resident's questions. If they feel they can't take care of the resident, they demand to have the resident moved out of the community, this is without preparation. They made sure it was the beginning of the month and then we don't get this money back. The staff did an evaluation and they said they could care for my loved one; however, once my loved one moved into the community the staff said this was too much for us to handle. They ended up kicking my loved one out of the community. I wouldn't let this place take care of a head of lettuce. The residents need sunshine and to get fresh air.

We moved our mom into the memory care unit in [date removed]. We had to move her out in [date removed]. The building is beautiful and everything looked great on paper. The reality was severe staffing shortages and inexperienced workers. One resident assistant in memory care actually said to us "I keep telling your mom what to do, but she can't remember". We would come to visit and find her wearing the same often inappropriate clothing day after day, laundry not done, clothes, shoes, etc all gone missing. The published daily activities mostly didn't happen. The TV or video was the main activity. Residents were left to fend for themselves d/t lack of staff. The staff that was there were working hard as far as we could tell, but significantly lacked support. It was kinda like a day care with no teachers.

The place is beautiful, the facility itself is just incredible we liked everything about it and the people at the front desk are wonderful. However, they have been having serious staffing issues ever since our loved one moved in. The staffing issue is so bad that some residents will go without eating. The staff play favorites and the dining staff is terrible. There is a real lack of communication between the care team and the families regarding any updates with loved ones. Our loved one recently fell and slightly injured themselves, it took the staff an hour to get to them and they never called our family to let us know what had happened.
