[Name removed] was very helpful. The apartment he showed us offers good, usable space, and the social and assistance amenities are among the best I've seen so far. My mother is now weighing the advantages of moving and is having a hard time accepting that she needs to do this (even though she herself has suggested that the time may have come for such a move), as she has been in her home for 65 years. It will take a little time for her to come around, and she has decided to try having more help coming into her home for now.

Very nice community. Staff great residents by name. They stop what they are doing if a resident is in need as simple as answering a question or helping get adjusted in chair or redirect to a room. I really like the care plan that it is all inclusive and not room plus level of care costs. They have onsite hair salon which helps as well. One draw back was they don’t take moms insurance which means the rounding doctor would not apply to us but they still assist in the coordination of care for outside apts. While I haven’t made a decision for mom yet they are on my list for consideration

[Name removed]/[name removed]? super busy on phone but very nice in person. Older and small apts but two residents hanging out in the Entryway/living room area talked with me and They liked living there. A music program was going on and about 16 residents were participating. All units on first floor which would make it easier with dogs. Didn’t sound like front desk staff is always present but it’s very close to our home. Overall the place could use some renovation but seems homey.

[Name removed] took me on a tour of Country Club Village when I was looking for a place for my 86-year-old mother and stepdad. Overall, the place was lovely. The carpet in the front areas near the lobby could stand to be replaced, and the cleanups on the salad bar could be quicker, but I am being really picky about a place that was otherwise very clean and well laid-out. The pros: The rents are comparable with similar communities I saw and called about but can be lowered using the pricing options. (The residents pay a higher fee to move in, which lowers the rents and pays for itself in six months or less.) The apartments I saw were very nice, with fresh paint and cleaned carpets. They have a full kitchen with dishwasher rather than the scaled-down kitchens in other communities. There are several activity rooms, all immaculate. The residents looked happy, engaged and well-groomed. Several visited and joked with [name removed] during my tour, and she is clearly liked. The food was good and plentiful on the buffet. Snacks and beverages are available in the snack room. They have buffet dining. Diners are called to the buffet according to section, so the residents don't have to stand in line for a long time. There is open seating, so the residents can change their dining companions at will. I really like the volunteer ambassadors who make newcomers feel welcome and show them the ropes. This would be huge especially for residents who come in without a spouse, though for couples too. Although this is an Independent Living community, caregivers are available onsite (or can be hired from outside) to provide many of the personal and health-related services the residents may need. There is a Travel Plan, which allows residents to travel to other Sunshine Retirement Living locations and stay at no charge. Overnight guests are allowed and eat for $8 per meal. Or guests can stay in a room for $85/night and eat free. Of course, those rates might change in the future. The cons: The first-floor apartments I saw have tiny patios, just enough to put a chair and small table, and some of the apartments split a double-sized patio. The patio views are not scenic. Even the ones that face the creek, also face their neighbors' outdoor a/c compressor units. (I guess that's what they are.) There are no courtyards or garden areas. The calendar states there is pet therapy but on the day I visited, they only showed a video of animals. The activities director told me that live animals do not come in regularly. Many of the residents have pets, so there are dogs around anyway. There is an apartment transfer fee of $650 should the residents want or need to change the location or size of their apartments. The $2,000 community fee is steep compared to the other communities I called on. My mother and stepdad decided to stay in California to be close to his doctors. But Country Club Village remains on my list of three communities I would have them consider should they decide to come to Hot Springs. I am giving it a four-star rating instead of five only because of the lack of a courtyard for socializing outdoors.

Quail Ridge works for my wife

After starting the wife out in a different facility (nursing home) I decided that a strictly Alzheimer's unit would be better for her. After 4 months in the initial facility. she moved into Quail Ridge about 4 months ago. I find the personnel there to be competent and friendly. I am happy with this facility. My wife is prone to fall while trying to walk. After a couple of bad falls, the staff and I agreed that I needed to hire a sitter to stay with her during waking hours. None of the places I looked at provide one-on-one care, so I had to provide that myself.

We toured with [name removed] and she was very pleasant. Everyone here seemed very happy, people living there was telling us how much they loved it. Seemed to have many activities. Downfall, seemed dated, not much outdoor spaces as far as waling trails, swimming pool, not doggie yards. At this time would be my 2nd choice.

I want to give this a 4.5 rating. I really liked the people there. It was originally made to be a hotel so there are no balconies. I am meeting with Valerie again on Saturday to take a look at the 2 Bedroom. It is still in contention. The people will be the determining factor here if the two bedroom works.

Consider Belleview Heights for your loved one

My husband has been living at Belleview Heights over two years now. As hard as it has been on all of our family with him having Alzheimer's, the staff at Belleview Heights has been there for him. A beautiful facility with wide hallways for those residents that still can walk around. The food has always been good and it helps me so much knowing he is at a facility that keeps him safe and comfortable. I have not heard of another place in the Denver metro-area that is as good as Belleview Heights.

The regular contact was out the week I toured, but the fellow who showed me around was personable and answered my questions. There are perhaps not as many activities on-site as other places, but it comes with a membership to Summerfield Clubhouse, where there is a golf course and an outdoor pool for the summer months. Some apartments have patios and balconies, and they have the larger alcove studio that I like. Three meals a day are served, and should a resident nap past a meal, the Concierge can arrange a sandwich or salad. If gourmet food is important, you should pass on this place. The food is simple and homey -- I was not impressed with the nutritional content of menu included in my packet-- too many sandwiches served with fries, pigs in a blanket, and starchy low-cost dishes. Lunch is the main meal here, which I think is a great idea. Pets are not only tolerated but welcomed enthusiastically here. Residents decorate the door to their apartment and I saw several decorations that indicated that a beloved pet also lived there. I was shown the theatre, which was empty, and a few activity rooms which were quiet. A class of some sort was being held adjacent to reception, and the people in it did not look particularly happy -- perhaps because they were so exposed by the lack of privacy and I was gawking at them. Summerfield is planning a renovation and they plan to make more "rest areas" and "activity rooms". There is much to like here. The prices are reasonable and almost everything is included. Certain things do happen at certain times, but there's an obvious effort to adapt the facility to the residents rather than the other way around. At the same time, Summerfield has more a feel of a hotel rather than a community, at least in reception. It may have just been my experience but the lady I gave a happy "Good morning" to when I entered did not respond, and none of the residents I smiled and made eye contact with returned my gaze. And yet the rooms and hallways are so happily decorated! I'm not sure what to make of that. I left at lunch time and the residents I saw in the dining room were sitting quietly and not talking as one might have expected. Again, the "open floor plan" of reception leaves the residents "exposed" to tourists, as if they are at the mall, rather than in their home. As I said, almost everything is included here. WiFi is available in common areas only, and there is a computer area. But if you want Internet in your apartment, you'll have to order that yourself. The rooms are already wired for it. As for location, it's a lovely neighborhood, set back a block or so from Pacific Highway, which can get busy. Like the other places I've toured, there's ample parking for residents, but at an additional cost. The reasons I'm giving Summerfield four instead of five stars is the "exposure" of the common areas, which they are in the processing of renovating, and lacklustre cheaped-out menu plan for the two weeks that were included in my packet. If they hired a professional chef with some nice specialties, even for just the main meal of the day, and backed off on the fries, I'd give it 5 stars.

I really liked this place from what I saw and the price was in a great range for my Mom. It is however a 45 min drive which is attainable but still rather far. Will give this place some thought.

PROS - [name removed]i is a great tour guide. We had lunch with friendly residents & the food was good. Service is leisurely but fine. The open-atrium gives the place a spacious hotel lobby feel. There seems to always be activity going on there. Price for 1 BR is within budget. Size of apartment is OK. CONS - High rise is not as appealing to mom. Not much room for landscaping or grounds for walking. There are sidewalks into neighborhood but no trails. Do not currently have first floor apartments available, which would be preferable if you have a dog. Also heard that elevator wait can be long. One elevator was out of order.

PROS - [name removed] was informative, really good tour guide. Listened to our needs. Nice amenities including the movie theatre, activities, all day menu. Personal care is a la carte. Partnership with Lyft was a nice idea. Pet fees on the lower side. Renovated 1 BR was well-laid out and felt roomy. Updated kitchen & bath. Affordable & within our price range. Nearby [name removed] Sr. Center has pool and lots of classes & amenities. They do not separate independent living from assisted living. CONS - Just off very busy Roswell Road. High rise not mom's favorite choice but she's considering it. Didn't have ground level apartments, wooded trails, or garden plots.
