My sister lived at the Courtyard at Lakewood for several years. I have never written a poor review in my life but I want people to really think about it before they ever commit to living here. After she passed away one of the people who worked there told us we would not be charged for a "30 day notice" so we worked so hard during a horrible time in our lives to get the apartment cleaned out within 1 week. Then, we found out they took $800.00 from her checking for a "30 day notice" and they refuse to refund it. Just a couple of the issues she experienced when alive: Refusal to fix the moldy carpet caused by the A/C leaking, refusal to pay for fixing her van when something leaked on it in the garage and would not come off, no help when the storage unit in the garage leaked and her stuff was completely saturated, etc.

Horrible Experience! My dad suffered terribly while residing in their Memory Unit. Inexperienced and untrained staff, Management that's just as bad. Adult Protectives Services investigated them along with Social Services regarding treatment of my dad. Stay away!

I toured this community twice in the past two years. It appears this place has deteriorated due to lack of consistent leadership. When I first toured I was extremely impressed by those I met with including the sales person, the Chef and the Executive Director but during my initial tour felt the time was not ready to move my loved one. During my recent second tour the community had a Completely different atmosphere that I had initially experienced and therefore I chose another community where my loved one is happy and very well taken care of.

I was treated very rudely by the Executive Director of this facility. Before completing the tour, I mentioned the recent newspaper publicity about substandard care at two nearby Sunrise facilities. She immediately became defensive and wary. After stepping out of the conference room briefly, she returned, began calling me by the wrong name, and asked me to leave. I'm still unsure exactly what happened, but I will never place a loved one here.

I moved my 93 year old mother from assisted living at [community name removed] where she lived for 14 years to Sunrise Fleetwood assisted living because they told me they would offer a higher level of care. After 4 days they gave me notice that they had made a mistake and she should be in memory care and had to leave assisted living immediately. I don’t like their memory care facility and so I moved her out (to [community name removed]). They have told me they plan to sue me for rent for not giving 30 days notice. I paid a $4500 “community fee” to move in (not to mention moving expenses) which was not refunded They admitted to me that they had bypassed their normal assessment before taking my money. You decide if these are people you want to deal with at what is an emotionally draining time

The Belmont in Thousand Oaks is poorly managed. My mother in law is a resident, regrettably. The turn over rate for employees is very high, particularly the pals, (care givers). The pals are very caring and hard working, but they’re not appreciated. Usually, there is a shortage of pals. Recently they’re we’re only 3 pals on duty. The food at Belmont is inedible, since theres a high turn over of chefs. Residents regularly meet with director, Bradlee, to express their concerns and make suggestions. Bradlee tells the residents that she will “look into it,” Clearly she doesn’t do anything cause nothing ever changes. The shortage of pals continues and the food is always terrible. If Belmont cared they would replace the current manager with someone who is more caring and competent.

After being told this would be an end of life guarantee, this resident was told he could not return to sunrise because of some dementia related behaviors Worse than that, he was given one day after leaving rehab to find another place Do believe the sales office pitch

Don't be fooled by the sales people at sunrise They admitted my brother, saying he would have care until the end of life Then he had a stroke and some dementia behaviors and wouldn't take him back Now I having all his furniture with no place to put it and I have to search for a new place quickly because they gave me one day'a notice to move out

I would never recommend this place for your loved ones. They have lied to us and allowed our loved one to starve to death. They consistently blamed it on the disease. We feel we were misled by the facilities. Please make sure you visit often so you can check on your loved ones.

My parent has lived here for several years. Started in assisted living and now she's in their Memory Care. Same facility just on the 3rd floor. Since day 1 of move in I've experienced problems. I could write a book and have documented everything. First and foremost they are understaffed in both assisted living and memory care. The food given to the residents in Memory care is a joke. Most residents in memory care have trouble eating, slicing, and drinking. I've seen corn on the cob served, chicken thighs (not the boneless ones), and juice is served in stemmed glassware, most residents have trouble holding onto a regular glass. In addition, the wheel the residents into the dining area and it takes around 30-40 minutes before they are served any food. It's painful to be there during meal times for this reason. The care staff will cut corners and I see it often probably because there's not enough staff to help. Prescription eye glasses, a telephone receiver, hearing aids all have been lost. I could go on and on about the lack of care and the lack of activities for the residents in Memory care. I will be happy to share additional information with anyone that has any questions for me. I am planning a move just not sure how quick I can make it happen.

Located in a peaceful neighborhood with RTD light rail station nearby. Adequate facilities and diverse daily activities, but food quality has become mediocre at best. Staff is friendly, but turnover is constant. Unfortunately management is predatory, with obtuse pricing and exorbitant annual rent increases. Don't stay here. Other places are friendlier and more affordable.

My mom and dad have been residents of Sunrise of Cinco Ranch for over a year now. Mom is in assisted living and dad is in memory care. I WOULD NOT EVER RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY TO ANYONE WHO WANTS THEIR PARENTS TO BE HEALTHY AND ALIVE AND WHO WANTS TO BE ABLE TO REACH THE KEY PERSONNEL IMMEDIATELY IN AN EMERGENCY. I JUST SPOKE WITH THE HEAD NURSE IN CHARGE. I HAD JUST SPOKEN WITH MY FATHER'S EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTOR WHO TOLD ME BASED ON MY FATHER'S CONDITION HE NEEDED TO COME BACK TO THE E MERGENCY ROOM. WHEN I SPOKE WITH SUNRISE, THEY SAID ONLY ONE PERSON IN THE FAMILY CAN MAKE THAT DECISION EVEN THOUGH I HAVE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR DAD'S HEALTH CARE. I TOLD HER THIS WAS URGENT AND SHE SAID THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING WTIHOUT MY SISTER'S INPUT AND ANOTHER NURSE'S INPUT THERE. I GAVE THEM THE NAME OF THE DR I HAD JUST SPOKEN TO AND THEY STILL WOULDN'T DO IT. THEY OFTEN CALL WITH URGENT INFORMATION ABOUT MY DAD'S CONDITION, ALWAYS WITH A SUGGESTION TO MOVE HIM SOMEWHERE ELSE. THEN AFTER I RUN AROUND LIKE A CHICKEN WITH MY HEAD CUT OFF TRYING TO REACH THE RIGHT PEOPLE WHO NEVER CALL ME BACK, THEY WILL TELL ME "OH, HIS HEART RATE IS OK NOW".....THEN WHY THE FIRE DRILL???? THIS HAPPENS OVER AND OVER AGAIN. SO, PLEASE CALL PEOPLE BACK; PLEASE CONTACT THEM ASAP ABOUT HOSPITAL RELEASE RECORDS IF THEY REEQUIRE DR FOLLOW UPS OR CHANGES IN MEDS. PLEASE CALL PEOPLE BACK. PLEASE QUIT PASSING THE BUCK. PLEASE QUIT TREATING SENIOR CITIZENS LIKE THEY NO LONGER MATTER!!

The apartments need to be updated. The elevators and hall carpets were dirty.

Walked out when I saw 30+ people in wheelchairs waiting for life to end. Very depressing!

It's interesting that they have a standard answer that is the same for all the reviews that are bad . When my father was a resident I personally vocalized my concerns regarding his care and nothing was done ...now they just give a standard reply to contact them. What for ? They don't do anything .

My loved one lived in the Terrace Club level for almost 2 years. There are many many things wrong with this level. First and foremost, the floor lead manager, [name removed], runs the floor like a prison warden. I want to be very clear. Residents conform to Sunrise, not the other way around. They even employ the same terminology-(room sweeps for counterfeit items ). Seriously, if a rule does not exist, they will make one up. Ask for help from director and they say they must take it to some executive board. The majority of the care staff are incompetent. They hire off the street, no experience, fact. Nursing staff covers many floors so expect no personalized care. Ask questions and they say they don't know. Not helpful. Regardless of what they tell you, the training and care is poor. The care staff perform all chores, activities, laundry, serving food, etc. This leave almost no time for actual care of your loved ones. The walk into room to gather laundry or empty trash, do not say hello, never ask how anyone is doing and if a question is asked they speak from the other room or part of apartment. Very unperson-able. Cleaning is okay, never under bed. Never the fridge. Activities are so so. Off floor and out of building are okay activities are fine. On floor sing along seem generic, movies not of residents choice. Why not let residents choose. There are a couple of good care staff and they were so very welcomed. I scheduled many meetings and tried very hard to work with them. So many times [name removed] would sit directly in front of me and act like she cares when reality if completely different. It is as if she conspires with a couple of henchwomen on the floor to make things appear a certain way. All care places need to be regulated. Sunrise is the strictest ever, they employ tactics to prevent better living in my opinion. Many places are the same, Sunrise is one of the worse. Try at your own risk.

This facility is not qualified to care for elderly dementia patients. Bertram House's ideal patient is a person who's family does not visit so they cannot complain about the filthy and neglect. They do not provide adequate staff and the staff they have is untrained. They should not be licensed to care dementia patients. The state of Massachusetts needs to investigate this place. We treat dogs better. DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONE TO BERTRAM HOUSE.
