Sunrise Senior Living

Prices are high here. A studio of about 300 sq. feet runs about $3660 per month. A larger studio runs $4050. A one-bedroom would be $3750-$4650. This does not include care costs which range from $527-$2480 in additional fees. The 'membership' fee is $2000 and is charged only once.

The Independent Living side is the focus here. My mother was a resident in Independent Living for a while and enjoyed it a lot. The staff is generally pleasant. The Assisted Living side seems dreadful. They just seem to be sitting around there without much to do. There is not enough space for them to plan many activities, and they pack the place, so it's a full money making house. The residents on the Independent side live in fear that they might end up there. Overhearing comments from the residents on the Independent side, such as, "I hope I don't end up over there" was quite common. They would be best as a fully Independent Living facility, which is what they do best.

It was clean and friendly, just like most of the places I saw, it was the sales staff that made the difference. I never got a straight answer out of them. They quoted me three different prices. That made me nervous, what was going to happen once we moved in? I went with a community that was much more straightforward to deal with.

My late aunt stayed in the "reminiscence" unit about a month. Be careful about putting loved ones with dementia here. It is a "one size fits all" type of care that may be good for some, but not all dementia patients. Aunt's memories and faculties were certainly failing, but she was with it enough to be aware of Alzheimer patients walking up and down the hall, trying to get into rooms, taking people's belongings, etc. -- and to be uncomfortable with it, as were we. Dementia is a complicated, many-faceted disease. Don't be fooled by thinking nice, pretty apartments (which the patients are kept locked out of anyway) are the answer to all dementia care. Also, they accepted an expensive delivery of her meds one day before she passed away, which could have been returned to the pharmacy (b/c they're on punch cards). They lied and said they couldn't be returned and still haven't made good on it.

I'd had some experience with this location when my mother lived there, and I was very unimpressed. The attitude of the staff, from the top down, is just not a loving environment. Everyone from the director to the aides felt like they were just there to get their paycheck, and it was not a nice atmosphere at all.

During our tour I noticed that this place seemed a bit overcrowded. It was also not as clean as some of the other locations that we visited, and had a noticeable odor, which was a big turn off for me. Compared to some of the other locations we looked at nearby this was not very impressive at all.

My mom's been out of there for a little while now. She needed more care and we couldn't afford upstairs, the memory care, and even if we could they didn't have any openings. It's really too bad they didn't assess her correctly in the first place. They tried to take care of her but after falling so many times I just didn't feel that was good enough. I was kind of disappointed that they didn't admit they couldn't provide the care she needed from the start. The people there were very nice but they really really need to screen people. She was there not even two months and they kept the deposit. When we moved her in they didn't clean the carpet or paint the room. I get that they are trying to accommodate people getting in there quickly but it kind of felt like it was all about the money. I mean, why didn't they tell us she really needed more care than they could provide?

I do not feel that Sunrise lives up to it's promises. My family member is in the Reminisence unit and I do not feel that they provide all the activities that they list on the activity calendar. Also, they have unskilled staff leading the activities. On the plus side, the staff is caring and patient and the facility is kept very clean.

My mother stayed at this facility for a couple months. The care she needed was really more than they were equipped to deal with (despite the fact they stated in writing they were ready for her) Most of the staff is friendly, but we had several bad experiences with at least two of the caregivers and had to ask they not be assigned to mom. The nurse seems a bit overwhelmed at times, and isn't the 'go out of my way to help' type that we found in other Sunrise communities. Overall it is clean, safe, and has a nice community with activities every day. Well suited for those who just need a little extra help, but not equipped for those who have had a serious stroke or similar mobility related issue.

We had to take our mother out. She wasn't getting good attention there. About 2 weeks ago she fell and broke her pelvis and at that point they said that she needed more attention than they could give her. It did not work out well.

We had a deposit down but her health was snowballing and it didn't work out, we were jsut going back and forth from rehab to the hospital but they're beautiful communities and everything is nice and clean, high ceilings, gorgeous moldings but then you see something like the Frontline thing and it scares the hell out of you. And then you have a 10000 a month just for assisted living.

We're now getting the wrinkles ironed out but it's a very friendly, casual kind of place and that appealed to me. It seemed very friednly and the people there seemed happy, it was a very pleasant appearance and clean and neat. I must speak highly for two people, the rest of them I had to work hard with them to listen to me and keep me in the loop. Mainly the problem arose with medical insurance, she had gotten really ill but no one had called the doctor back and I was furious and wanted to know why she was being neglected and they said it was because they couldn't bill her insurance and all of those excuses but we got over that hurdle when the insurance took over. Then a medication problem arose, its pretty much straightened out right now but Sharon, who is an absolute doll, saw me in the lobby and told me to talk to the director who said he would take care of the problem and he did. Make it very clear when you go in there how they're going to handle medications and the insurance they have because it sounded like an easy transition but it certianly wasn't.

My family was very excited about the property view, spaciousness, activities and location. We moved in quickly. The activities, although documented and publicized, are non-existent. The food was not to the liking of my family - bland, dried out, no seasonings and very uninspiring. The medical care is non-existent on the property itself - one must travel out for it. Repairs and services needed in the property are readily documented when requested, but there is quite a delay in actually getting the work done.

My mother in law has been at Sunrise Frisco for nearly a year. She started out in Assisted Living and has been moved to Memory Care. To this day....we have no idea who is really running this place. You rarely get a call returned and we have yet to get a written explanation of current charges and depending on who you ask...some things are included....yet you find out later they are not. They keep this place extremely warm and humid. I understand the older clientele would be more comfortable at warmer temperatures....however the humidity level is not healthy and with a little bit of money that could be addressed. I am not quite sure that anyone in the Memory Care unit has special training in how to deal with those with memory loss. For one....music of their era is known to be soothing...but they can't seem to afford to have any. Many of her items have disappeared...which doesn't surprise me in Memory Care....however the lack of concern in locating them is angering me. Two items are her wedding rings.....total value of about $20,000. She NEVER took them off. Someone had to have asked her to remove them...but what is VERY frustrating is NO feedback on trying to locate them. Earrings and silver pieces have also disappeared. You can certainly understand how items get mixed up in an area where there are Alzheimer's patients...however...very strange that they are all things of value. I have addressed with them several times that when they do laundry they ruin her clothes and/or they do not get returned to her. I have returned many items....including sheets that are placed in her room that are not hers. They often appear AGAIN in the next day or so....and I return them AGAIN! At this point I will be looking for somewhere to move her to that is more attentive. They always seem to be having meetings...whether you are visiting or trying to reach someone on the phone. I don't know what they are doing in the meetings....because NOTHING positive is being accomplished! I have also seen many meals they serve....not appetizing. Not nice fresh fruit and vegetable. Meat cooked to a nondescript color. I have also communicated with them many times that they need to feed her lower calorie healthy meals because she has gone from a size 8 to a size 14 while living there....To no avail. There are several who work there....the concierges mainly who are good at what they do and the activities coordinator....the rest...I'm not quite sure what they do. They certainly don't communicate with the families which includes returning phone calls! It has potential....but apparently there is NO leader!

They are understaffed, and the care givers are untrained and not properly supervised. They posted a schedule both for care and activities that were rarely adhered to. The facility became unsafe for mom to stay there.

Staff seems fine from what I see on weekly visits to independent living. Lots of complaints about not getting served what was ordered at dinner. no dining room in independent living since multiple leaks this winter. Lots of problems with the physical buildings.

I think Sunrise is a great place if your loved one is pretty self-sufficient. Our issues came from the preliminary evaluation. We were very upfront about our loved one having ostomy bag, as well as a few cognitive issues. We felt he would go in to Sunrise as a level 3. The evaluation was not thorough enough, and he was admitted as a level 2, which indicated less assistance was needed. This was not the case. If your family member needs a little help with bathing, dressing, and someone to cook, and wants socialization activities, it is a very good place. If there are other medical issues, make sure a proper assessment is done.

When I arrived, no one was expecting me even though I had an appointment. I was taken to an office and told that there are no available apartments in memory care or in assisted living. I was given some pricing information after they asked me a few questions. I was not offered a tour of the facility nor was I shown anything within the facility. I had to ask if they had any kind of brochures or folder of information on the facility. The associate was nice but I felt that there was no interest in showing me that their facility was a place that I would want to move my parents to.

Communication isn't great. Attention to medications is poor. Most staff seem nice and attentive. Others could be better. Administration needs better organization and communication with the families. Beautiful facility but hasn't been great with administering care for a man who has high-care needs. Very expensive.
