Sunrise Senior Living

I thought it was affordable, but the rooms were small and I think the staff could be trained a little more to be more sensititve to their behavior when peopel are touring. I think it was the way the hallways were cluttered, it's the design, it's the feel when you walk into the building, and again, the thing that caught me was the behavior of the staff. Not to say they weren't friendly, they were, but when you see them complaining or rolling their eyes it raised some red flags for me.

Honestly, I had a problem because of all the animals. A lady's dog got away from her and it was almost tripping the residents and I thought that wasn't good. My father is not a big animal lover and everyone there had their animals out in the lobby with them. I was not too sure how he would like that. If you're an animal lover, that's the place to be.

This is the only facility that could handle my parents conditions. They've been a little diffcult to work with regarding timing paperwork, scheduling, etc. Really hoping my parents love this place.

It's really close to my house, I could walk there if I wanted to. It seemed pretty good, but I wasn't sold on it, it's a sunrise community and I had heard some bad things about another one, I hadn't at that time, I heard about it later. It seemed pretty nice and I think their idea of their care for people with memory issues sounded pretty good but I just didn't feel that great about it, you know how you get a feeling about this or that. I think they had tables set for a meal in that section where they all sit together and I rememebr noticing that they had glasses out and all and they were using plastic and they just didn't look clean, the other places seemed clean, but that turned me off

Waited to find someone for 10+ minutes. Staff seemed young and a little unprofessional. Room seemed cheaply made. Facility was not warm and inviting - just big. Too far!

Some Sunrise's are good and some are bad, I think the one in Arlington is better. He had just come from the hospital to there, his daughter's weren't going to let him back to his apartment but they order too much pills and he never took it, it was a big issue. The care at night was not too good, the rehab wasn't too good, I didn't like that but it was only temporary.

My brother was not thrilled with this one. He didn't get good vibes from it and it didn't look as clean, he said there were lots of old people sititng around and sleeping and basically being ignored and he didn't like that. It was pretty comparable to Spring Hills with pricing, but they wouldn't accept her military presciptions (she had to pay for theirs) so with the added medicine fees and us having to go and take her to the doctor this wasn't a good fit for us.

My dad was in independent living and at meal times, everyone sat at a table, they each had their own menus and servers would ask them what they wanted to eat, it seemed more people oriented and I would eat here. My father would sometimes need to get redirected and this facility was smaller so when he would go down the elevator the people at the front desk could redirect him. The administrators were the main reason we moved him, that, and the fact they didn't have a handicapped shower. I'm about 5'7, people would call me thin, and I would stand in the shower my father would use and I felt the walls were too close. It's about 20 years old and they're bene renovating lots of that building, so it's just old. I would describe the director that left there as a sourpuss, the women at the front desk, except for one of them, were in the same shoes, just sour. There were 3 interim directors and the time my dad was there, not that they were bad, but when we left there, nobody said goodbye, nobody told me where to turn in the keys or what would happen with billing, I had to go and ask, the residents were not told my dad left and many of them were upset. They replaced nurses on the assisted and independent living side, they replaced one of the activities directors, and when I left there they didn't have a chef; so there was all this change in personel which made the whole running of the place inconsistent. What they should have done is change out the concierge first thing.

This was fine, there was no smell, but first of all, the room that my mom would have been in was soooo tiny and it was sooo expensive. I don't know what the other Sunrise would have been like but since they're all managed by the same company I assume it would have been similar. What killed us is what they charged for each medication each day and for each visit. At other places the medication management is worked into the levels of care and this charged you for each injection. When I toured there were a bunch of people playing bingo in the dining room but there was no way that was all the residents. I didn't see anybody else, it was dark and it seemed less happy than the other one.

The cleanliness is why I mark them down, it could be better. You just walk in and it has an odor in the hallways constantly. They do vacuum and they do keep it cleam, but the rooms, I think they're only vacuumed once a week, it's not bad, but it's not the greatest, there's room for improvement. With the care, there's good people and then you have bad people, just like everything else. There's just a few activities, I thought there would be more. They do have someone who comes in for therapy but as far as games they don't seem to have set times, they do have them though and the staff is trying to encourage her to particpate. The food is the biggest complaint amongst the residents, the table that my mother sist at, all four women complain about the food. The menu doesn't seem to vary a whole lot, she's been there for 2 months now and I see the same meals quite often. But overall the staff goes out of their way, I think they're doing the best they can, it's a difficult job and I'm glad there's peopel out there that do this type of job.

I've only been there once or twice, I live in New York and was taking care of my dad up here. My brother and sister in law have been taking care of the situation but from what I've seen in the beginning, overall, the cleanliness is good and the care has been pretty good. i'm maybe a little disappointed a little bit in the value that we're paying, but I'd say it's okay, they could be working a more with my dad. It's more expensive than what we were paying in New York but I would expect more person to person attention. Although he is concious and aware, he's becoming more depressed and not staying active so in the state of mind that he's in he doesn't want to particpate. From a room option, we were looking for bigger apartments as opposed to just a room and they had better options.

This was another high rise scenario and I believe they had really tiny rooms.

Staff need to take more time to really understand the needs and wants of the individual and customize that care. Example- some folks are unable to propel themselves. They must wait to be taken back to their room if they want to go. They do not want to sit in the lobby all day. This means more work for the staff to accomadate those needs. Some staff members can be extremely caring while others deliver care like they dont want to be there. My observation is if the care required of the individual is minimal this is an excellent faciity. Especially if the individual is able to care for themselves most of the time. As the needs of the individual increase, the staffing is really unable to maintain a good level of care. This is the downside of assisted living in my opinion.

They're very friendly, it's just that they don't follow through like I thought they were going to. I haven't been happy with them for about 3 weeks. The care is not what they promised it to be. When they have somebody who is younger and disabled it's a whole different thing. He's young so he's intimidating to the staff. I would say if you have someone who is older and compliant it would be okay but if you have someone who is not compliant, like my husband, they're just going to sit in their room and be overlooked. I end up cleaning him and taking his dirty clothes to be washed. I'm kind of aggravated with them right now.

Sunrise has a homey feel to it, it is smaller than most others we visited. The staff seemed very nice. I visited before and appreciated that if a person needed to have more care such as onset of dementia, they can stay there. This makes it easier for the resident, no upheaval or significant transition. I also visited that floor and it was pleasant and had a nice secure emotional feel. They were definitely geared for their needs. I didn't inquire too much about activities so I can't review that. I didn't like that they had a dog/dogs there. My mother wasn't a dog person so that was a turnoff for her. It's a matter of preference.

A very pleasant place. Its philosophy of wanting residents to feel as if the whole place is their home makes it feel like there are too many people around all the time. It made me appreciate my solitary lifestyle.

This place was very pretty... it's like when you're little and your mom says "if you don't have something nice to say..." but I loved the director there, he seemed to be the most caring individual at the place and he was the director. The people in daily contact with my mom were not. I was very disappointed with the nursing staff. I know it's all modern but you've got different people there with jeans on everyday and my mom didn't know who these people were giving her medication and she was there for 2 years; so in a setting where you've already got confusion it wasn't good. I was taken aback by the treatment and it was very expensive. I think it depends on the level of care they need and how much money you have but it shouldn't have to be like that.

She's adjusting, so its not much of a problem, it's just the administration there. We were led to believe different things and they're a bit lax and any one of the residents will say that it's not what it used to be. The services are not the same, the food's not the same, the food is not the same, there is not much to do anymore. I know there's new administration there and I know Peter says he's trying to improve things but they just "yes" you. For 7,000 a month there shouldn't be cobwebs, things shouldn't be soiled, there should be things going on. They're getting a lot of money but what are they doing with it? I know it's very difficult when people are elderly but they are getting a lot of money. I don't want to paint everything negatively because I know they do watch her and they do feed her 3 times a day.

They are doing a pretty good job. The food here is awful. It is overcooked, the meat is dry and the coffee is just awful. They do a nice job of keeping rooms clean and taking the residents for walks and exercises. They are not as attentive medically as I would like. Overall it is not a bad community but it could be so much better.
