Sunrise Senior Living

I want to thank Sunrise and 2 people most of all who have taken care of my parents in the memory care level on the 4th floor. [name removed] has gone above and beyond in helping my mom who has dementia, multiple sclerosis, and in a wheel chair. She has treated my mom like it was her own family member and we can't thank her enough for the outstanding job she is doing. The second person is [name removed] who took wonderful care of my dad while he was with us. He passed away 3 months ago, but while he was living at Sunrise, [name removed] did everything she could to make him happy and comfortable. She too went way above and beyond my expectations, and it was very much appreciated by my wife and I. This is an extremely hard and demanding job and they both do it so well while always having a smile on the there face. We can't say enough good and positive things about [name removed]and [name removed]. Thank you both so very much for making us feel relieved to know that they are in such good hands in this very difficult time.

Sunrise is clean and staff are very friendly. Mom's room is beautiful. The majority of the staff are wonderful. Mom is very well cared for and monitored by a team. Recent changes to the leadership team with no explanation to family. A bit unsettling. Mom loves the food here. They have multiple choices at each meal and each is excellent. Lots of activities offered. They encourage participation too.

On the day I was going to see The Apsley and another place, I ended up canceling the second appointment. The Apsley's decor was impressive, and everyone I met that day was very nice. I wanted my husband to be close to home, and frankly, The Apsley was cheaper than the other place. I liked what I saw and brought my husband with me for the next visit, and he agreed to stay there. They agreed to have my husband on a "respite" footing for a month while I had cataract surgery in both eyes. One month turned into three, and my husband got used to it, and I was happy to recover from being his 24/7 caretaker for the past three years. Now, after six months, I don't believe he would be as happy at home. People with dementia need familiarity and consistency, and he gets that at The Apsley. I did hire an aide to give him some extra attention and to take him to various activities on other floors, and he has gotten stronger from when he started there. Sure, there are some hiccups when new people come on staff, but the lead people are pretty responsive to requests, and I am pleased with my husband's improvement. As a practical comment, one thing I wish I had known ahead of time was the NYState forms that we were required to fill out before my husband could move in. And getting the prescriptions to go through Omnicare actually delayed our move-in date. Overall, I can highly recommend The Apsley. It's worth a visit!

My mom might differ if asked but from what I see, I am happy. We have had a couple of incidents and they do work to resolve issues. For example, my mom claims that it takes too long for a response when she presses her button. While mostly, it is less than 10 minutes, recently, she had a 20 min wait and I got on the phone with the exec director (who admitted that it was 20 min) and made it clear that it is not ok. Compared to her old place and what I’ve heard from people who are at the [community removed], sunrise is pretty good with response time. The all day dining is great because it allows my mom to move on her own time and not rush because the dining room is closing.

The staff was very nice. House keeping could have been better. Needed in room activities for those who are bed bound.

My mom [name removed] liked her stay. She found the staff friendly and attentive. She was comfortable. She didn’t like the food that much and she specifically mentioned it was mostly sandwiches. There were some entrees she wasn’t familiar with and did not appeal to her. She did not show interest in participating in the activities. Most of her social interaction was in the dining room.

My father appreciates the staff and team at the facility and it’s been a positive experience. He is enjoying his patio and the meals provided and doesn’t regret making the choice to move from Nebraska.

-Unfortunately there have been times when a resident needed assistance, the alarm was pressed and didn't work (i.e. the staff was not alerted to the distress call). I don't know if this has been repaired. -my mother is in independent living and can still drive during the day. She has taken sick residents to Urgent Care several times. There should be a service available for this. - the laundry room on the ground floor is a totally inadequate - we were only shown the nice one upstairs on our initial tour. However my mom is stuck with the very small, inadequate one. - No renovations to units since they were constructed 40 years ago(!?). They just paint and replace carpet. There are still bathtubs in the primary bathrooms, this is unsafe and doesn't meet current codes for senior living construction. Other facilities renovate as needed between residents. -the food is acceptable but mediocre and should be improved. The staff is friendly, the residents are friendly and welcoming, the weekly cleaning service is great, activities are good and it's a convenient location for my mother.

I haven't spoke to administrative staff, but the food looks good. I enjoyed what I had the only time I ate there. I can’t comment on the value for money as I don't know what my cousins paying. I did think the initial price I saw was crazy high. Yes, I would recommend Sunrise of Prospect Heights to other families.

The facility and the food were best. There were some really great caretakers and others didn't seem to listen to what my FIL asked them to do - something as simple as opening the Velcro on his slippers - some would do it and some would not.

Not enough staff to give to each resident. I felt that since my husband was only there for a month he was ignored since he would be leaving soon. Food service was too slow. Portions were good but every item was placed in separate bowls.

Staff is excellent and caring. The facility is excellent but the food selection is very limited.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. They invited us to stay for lunch so we could sample the food, which was very good. The units are lovely, and many have had recent updates. There are a number of different floor plans to choose from.

In general I am quite pleased with the kind gental, and compassionate care my 99 yr old father has received at Sunrise at Silas Burke House Assisted Living. My only concern is the medical follow-up my dad has received since he had a medical emergency a month ago requiring a short hospital stay. I am concerned that his swollen ankles appear to have a few sores and possibly an infection. I would feel more comfortable if the facility assigned an MD as his Primary Care Provider and more closely managed his edema.. To balance this out, my dad is a retired physical who is very stubborn, has dementia and has not been diligent to sleep and elevate his feet in the luxurious electronic recliner we purchased for him.

The facility is okay in Memory care, no one just stops in to check my Mom in her room but the Hospice folks. They are short and aide on the floor with many residents many days. My Mom is still sitting at her lunch table after lunch some days after everyone is gone. I’d like to see a better sense of urgency to nteract with the residents & put them first before cleaning up after meals.

They make you that your family member be happy living here. I checked several places before making my choice. They made me feel like I was welcomed

I haven't tried the activities so can't say, but my dad hasn't complained. What I liked most is the cleanliness, the room price (my dad is sharing a double room, not many other places had double rooms), and the overall friendliness of the staff.

The facility has a lovely, homey feeling without being too old. Food is delicious. New activities coordinator [name removed] is friendly and creative with activities.

The staff is always friendly and supportive. The facility is more 'homey' than other places that can be quite stark.

Relatively inexpensive compared to others. Close to town and my Mom's house. I think my Mom likes the place but apparently high turnover and management changes make it a little difficult
