My loved one was previously a resident at Ciel Senior Living of Tri-Cities Memory Care, but we took him out and he is much happier being at home. This facility just kept getting more expensive and I couldn't see that they did that much more for him.

Our Experience

The facility was fine. Clean and well maintained. The issues we had were due to it being too modern for a person Mom's age, 96. No landline phone or cable tv. Cell phones and streaming to get the channels she used to watch. Very difficult to teach someone that age to stream. I have friends my age that have troubleā€š it really was frustrating for her. Her after surgery, life was hard on her. The activities were okay. Not as many as the facility she came from, but that was independent living. The residents at Holi don't seem to be as interested in activities. The housekeeping was good. The lady we always saw clean Mom's room was wonderful. A very nice and helpful lady who always kept mom's room clean. The people who helped Mom with her daily living were also very kind. Always cheerful and Mom liked the vast majority of them. The move in went smoothly with no problems. The food was probably better than we heard about, but not what I would say is a strong point. The daily specials were often something that older adults would probably not choose if they had a choice. Their secondary menu selection was very poor. I personally would not have been happy with most of the food and meals myself. Where Mom came from, and where we moved her to, had menus that are far superior. All that being said, we are thankful that Holi stepped up and sped the process along when she was discharged from rehab. That's another story. I'll never forgive the insurance company involved. As far as recommending them, my Mom's situation was unique. Finding a place for her with her medical need was tough. A person with an Ostomy issue has a big obstacle in finding a place. Other than that, she was active and really missed her old life doing things. From my perspective, a lot of the residents that we saw were closer to nursing home than assisted living. We would tell people that. We wouldn't just badmouth them.

I would tell a friend that I was relieved to have my mother somewhere that I trusted she was being cared for. She was grateful to be there. I picked it over others because I would never have to move her again ( regular care, memory care and hospice care).

It was a little rough to begin with, but it was probably a combination of getting my mother's meds straightened out , changing to Ciel, and sometimes the language barrier. They hired an additional activity director, who is great.

I toured The Lodge at Mallard's Landing during my search for an Assisted Living facility for my loved one. The tour was fine, but I felt that I could have had a bit more time. I loved the atmosphere there, but when I considered it for my dad, I found it to be too large and spread out and thought this could be overwhelming for him. There are lots of stairs (and elevators). It was very comfortable seeming, like a lodge. They have been voted Best Food in an Assisted Living, but I didn't have a meal.

Temporary Respite Care

Retrieving medication at the end of my loved one's stay required few returns before we had her correct medication. I also question if she received her daily medication since her acetaminophen was not opened and her Memantine appeared to be at the same level when I dropped her off.Otherwise, I am pleased with the service she (and I) received.

Overall pleased

We went with Columbia Crossing because when I was there for the tour, the interaction between staff and residents is what really stuck out the most. They really keep in contact with the families, but I did have to push for that communication. Once I did that though they have been great. In memory care the food is just so so, but on the assisted living side the food is phenomenal. I would definitely recommend them to other families.

Overall Quite Good

I would recommend that you make sure that you are taking a proactive approach in making sure the care is being met for your loved one. Make sure you are advocating for your loved one, to make sure the care is meeting your expectations. Most of the time the staff communication with the family has been good. There are three meals a day and there are choices for the residents to choose from.

Comfy cozy

My loved one was here for a respite stay. If I remember right, their minimum for respite is 2 weeks. They have a ton of activities but we just weren't sure if they were getting him. He absolutely LOVED the food. The staff are all very friendly and it is a really nice facility, you walk in and it feels like a hotel. I was told that they keep regular staff and do not hire temporary staff, so it is the same people each day who know the residents. His room had the type of chair he needed for mobility that helped him to stand up so that was nice. They really try to make it feel like home. I would recommend Columbia Crossing to other families looking.

A happy aunt is a good aunt

The Lodge at Mallard's Landing is a bit short staffed, so we aren't getting all the care we're paying for. However, the staff who are there are very good. They're very hardworking and they are really trying to take care of everyone's needs. We are paying for the highest tier, but because they are so short staffed our family has to do a lot things. If we weren't there to advocate, things like a tray might be left behind or the trash may not be emptied. The most important thing for me, even though we've had staffing issues, is that my aunt is so happy there. She's in their memory care unit and we thought it would be a battle, but after a month there she loves it and doesn't want to leave. We had to fill out a lot of paperwork, it was incredible how much paperwork we had to complete. We also filled out paperwork for her toe nails to be cut; once a month a doctor comes in to cut nails. We gave a lot of information and discovered a lot of stuff wasn't processed, she wasn't signed up for certain services. Balls were dropped from the time we first filled out paperwork, so we had to follow up and make sure the things we thought were taken care of, were actually taken care of. It was kind of a disappointment, but once it was resolved it was good. For example: my aunt has been in the emergency room several times for dehydration. She has trouble getting downstairs and she only drinks ice water. If someone doesn't bring it, she wont drink it. We put it in her admissions paperwork that she won't drink lukewarm or room temperature water. The staff realized it and they bring it now, but it was a learning curve. My aunt is also on oxygen and it was a real challenge for them to understand how to work with it. She was running out of it or given empty bottles, but now they seem to get it. It took a couple months, but they've seemed to figured it out. To us, the most important thing is how happy she is. I know there are problems, but her happiness trumps everything. I know they're trying hard. She is happy and that amazes me! For someone who didn't want to leave her home, we expected breakdowns, but the staff are so nice to her here. There are a couple of caregivers she just loves; they've made such a positive impact on her that even with dementia she remembers their names and it warms my heart. It's a really pretty facility with a pretty location. There are trees all around it and it's near a lake. It looks like a mountain lodge and it's very welcoming. They did a beautiful mural inside. Because she's in memory care, they painted this really pretty mountain mural over the door so residents don't realize it's a door and try to leave. It's such an interesting concept and it seems to have done the trick. When we first arrived it hadn't been painted, and we would see people approaching the door. Once it was done, I haven't seen them approach it. It's a nice little touch! My aunt also always compliments the food and how delicious it is.
