This is a very large personal care home-not an assisted living facility.

This facility IS NOT an assisted living facility but they will say they provide assisted living. Make sure you are educated in the difference between a personal care home (which is what they are and put themselves out to be) and an assisted living facility, at least in Georgia, so your expectations are realistic. The difference significantly impacts the required staff qualifications and accountability. The following website can provide good, unbiased information that might help guide you in making the right decision. It is important you know what you are getting for your money and your loved one. Give it a chance, don't give up right away.

There were some problems with medication. I would encourage people with loved ones moving into any community to give it a couple of months. There is such a shock and adjustment that even if they hate it at the beginning, just wait it out. The caregivers and the kitchen staff and the cooks were good they did a fine job. We had issues with the director and the administrator. It was clean and beautiful though.

The Retreat at Lady's Island

It has become crystal clear that an assisted living facility should have at its core people (an appropriate ratio of well trained care takers) who are devoted to genuinely caring for and assisting residents to ensure their safety and comfort. The ratio of staff to resident was not adequate to maintain appropriate care and safety. He fell several times and felt staff were slow to respond to his calls for assistance. He did appreciate the quality of the food and the facility itself. The level of care simply did not match up. Some staff members lacked the dedication to their roles as care givers. When he moved to a different facility, his care was more consistent, response time much more satisfactory. He actually improved and falls went from two a week to once every couple months!

I moved my mom into The Phoenix at James Creek a few months before COVID. At the time, a gentleman that I spoke with said his mom lived there, told me the food was one of the best things -- and that was one of the main reasons I chose it. Unfortunately, that couldn't be further from the truth. The food is absolutely terrible. I wouldn't serve some of it to anyone. The kitchen seems to go through cooks constantly, and the meals look and taste like something thrown together with no care at all. I wish that I could post pictures of a meal so you can see for yourself -- what they are calling "lasagna" on the menu. It looks like it is missing marinara sauce and was filled with something that could pass for cat pate. You can't even tell that it is what it is. My mom sends me photos of her meals all the time, and it's heartbreaking. I've resorted to taking her grocery shopping so she can have something decent to eat. I genuinely feel sorry for tenants with no family.

New/Different Wellness Nurse who has experience with memory care (common sense, compassion, empathy, calm demeanor); more licensed professionals; computer system; lower tech to resident ratio; more frequent checks on residents staying in room, especially during evening/night shift. The Memory Care Director could not be more appropriate for her position. She welcomed info re' my spouse as did the Med Techs and provided genuine care for him. She is blooming where she is planted. Understaffed.

Observe staff to patient ratio. Don't take their word for it. Quality of care is not what we desired. Staff did the best they could considering. My loved one has passed, but an infection probably accelerated his death. For the price, it wasn't worth it but choices were limited.

Not recommended

The $[removed] nonrefundable payment that must be paid immediately was excessive. Dad was only there 6 weeks, so that $[removed] seemed unreasonable. I think they should have pro rated that charge. When we were cleaning out dad's room, the main thing the facility director was concerned about was to make sure we took his mattress. I would not recommend the bungalows to anyone.

Needs a lot of improvement before we can recommend

Quality of care - 5 (clinical nursing staff), 2 (aid staff). My mother-in-law was a resident at Bungalows for a few months. Near the end of her stay, she fell in her room and suffered major bruising and a cut on her face. She was rushed to the ER by ambulance, was examined thoroughly, and returned to Bungalows a few hours later. Unfortunately, we only learned about the fall (and related ER trip) about 9 days later. We went to Bungalows to pick up my mother-in-law to take her to the ER because the staff nurse advised us that her leg was swollen. When we arrived, we noticed bruising on my mother-in-law's face and a healing cut above her eye. We immediately spoke to nursing staff and asked where the bruising/cut was from. They consulted the computer records and told us that she had fallen in her room in the early morning about 9 days prior and had been taken to the ER where she had also been diagnosed with pneumonia (which we also were unaware of). We expressed our frustration that we were not notified about the fall or her ER visit, especially since when my mother-in-law had fallen previously, resulting in NO injuries, nursing staff had called us immediately. This fall was MUCH worse, and yet we weren't contacted at all. Later at the ER, the medical staff noticed additional bruising on my mother-in-law's torso and leg (in fact, the bruising on the leg was the apparent cause of the swelling). Since this was our first awareness of this additional bruising, we again reached out the Bungalows and expressed our increasing concern over the extent of the fall and inquired more about what had been done at the ER visit so that diagnostic testing to determine the extent of the damage would not be duplicated. Soon after, we requested the records related to the fall from the Bungalows, and we discovered that the aid working with my mother-in-law the morning of her fall had actually recorded in the written record that she had spoken with my husband that morning and notified him about the fall (which was patently false). We even reviewed our phone records and found that we did not have any missed calls from Bungalows indicating they had not even attempted to reach us. We spoke with the Bungalows' administration about not only the lack of notification, but also about the aid's falsification of the records. The admin stated that they would review their procedures, but we were not very confident that anything would change. (Due to my mother-in-law's condition and our lack of confidence in Bungalows, she ended up being transferred from the ER to a nursing home and never returned to Bungalows.) While we had been very pleased with Bungalows' staff up to this point, especially their nursing staff, this experience very much soured our perception of the facility. While the aid who falsified the record was obviously in the wrong, and the rest of the staff might be very competent and professional, our experience with the facility following her fall leads us to the conclusion that the Bungalows has a lot of improvement to make on how they handle notifications and dealing with bad staff before we would be comfortable recommending the facility to anyone else.

Unkept promises - very understaffed

They make a lot of promises during the tour, but they are extremely understaffed and do not follow up when issues are brought to their attention. The rooms - They are decent. The entire place needs some cleaning and updating.

Memory Care

Not recommended

My loved one was in the Memory Care unit. While some of the CNAs were very pleasant and caring, some were not. Understandably, because it was evident they were being overworked. We witnessed staff from the admin offices double up and work along side the CNAs from time to time. (I assumed they were certified but I never checked) Sedation medicine was administered because of agitation, but they abused it. They could not handle our loved one adequately, but never proposed or suggested alternatives. When we discovered he could no longer swallow on his own, we found residual crushed sedation medicine in his mouth that had been there for days, along with terrible hygiene. Bed soars developed, and the staff did not follow the wound care nurse's orders. They worsened so quickly that he lost the ability to walk. Once that all started, it was a slippery slope and he advanced quickly to hospice. The quality of care does not match the high pricing.

Unfriendly and Unresponsive Management

Management is poor -- unfriendly, unwelcoming and unresponsive to family members. I brought something to my brother one evening and the front door was wide open at 11 pm. I sat in the lobby over 40 minutes before someone closed the door. This is in a facility where residents don't lock their doors. Very dangerous.

Not Pleased

The staff, transportation, activities, facilities and rooms are all above average. The dinning room and meals however have been mediocre at best and usually well below acceptable. They do have a new chef on board now that has improved meal and food quality considerably. The biggest complaint however is that even though I have a signed contract explicitly stating that 3 meals per day are included in the rent payment they now state they will make the dinning room open to the public along with a liquor license and start charging for all meals separately from the rent charged. Without meals included the price for rent will be absolutely laughable if it didn't want to make you cry for the residents that cannot afford this! A complete game changer!
