Do your homework

My mother was in the memory care unit of Sunrise at Ivey Ridge for two years. While the general staff that cared for her on a daily basis was caring and tended her needs extremely well, I can not say the same thing for the management staff. During those two years, there were at least four Reminance directors. Rarely did I hear from them and it was not easy to make contact. After my mother's passing this week, I had to place at least two phone calls to find out what I needed to do to donate my mother's belongings. I never received an initial call from anyone when she died. In my opinion, if you are in the business of taking care of the aging, a call to the family to make contact when they pass should be included on a very basic checklist for management.

room for improvement

Their response time when a patient pushes the button needs to be improved. Sometimes my mother can be waiting a half hour or so for someone to come and check on her. They say that they encourage her to get involved in activities, but I do not see it. There is definitely some room for improvement.

Not a great experience so far

Our experience with Southern Plantation has not been a good one, unfortunately. We chose this place based mostly on the price and what we could afford, and not we are paying for it. While the staff are friendly for the most part, the care and communication has been incredibly inconsistent. We're constantly hearing different things about what level of care our loved one needs, what services are being provided for her, etc. It has just been a real pain all around.

Loving daughter of great dad!! - Family/Friend
Memory Care
February 23, 2015
Beware! Not a great (or good) place for your loved one!!!

My dad stayed here for a year and we were so fortunate to be able to move him out and into my home (once we did all the handicapped renovations). While the staff was friendly, there seems to be no oversight to ensure the proper care for the residents. The staff to resident ratio is crazy (1 to 12 or worse) and the residents pay the price for this by suffering needlessly is wet clothing, sitting in their wheelchairs or in a sofa for hours on end, maybe watching TV or facing a wall. The activities lady does her best to keep everyone occupied and entertained but often finds herself helping the caregivers with the resident's needs. My family had to help with my dad to keep him from sitting in soiled pants for too long, or to take him to the bathroom or to bed, instead of waiting for a caregiver to have time for him. We complained to the state authorities (using info from signs hanging in the facility) but there was no resolution. There just doesn't seem to be enough oversight to ensure that these facilities are run appropriately for the care of our loved ones, particular when you consider the monthly payment for these "services." It's been two years since we moved my dad out and he is doing so much better now! He is happy and healthy and in the best possible condition considering his medical circumstances. I often roamed the facility, either looking for a caregiver or looking for a supply and saw how dirty the place is, the cleaning lady was just overwhelmed with the amount of work that needed to be done to get the place back in shape. The washers and dryers were old and rickety, with clothes getting mixed up or lost. We just did my dad's laundry ourselves and carried them back and forth between the facility and our home. Bottom line, this place is horribly understaffed and the personnel need training and oversight. My dad had bruises and scrapes and scabs when he lived here, he hasn't had any of those things since we moved him back home. We saw countless other residents being [removed] or handled roughly and spent as much time there as possible to make sure my dad wasn't handled the same way. I just want to make sure that others know what they're getting into before sending your loved one here; it's not as nice and safe as they make it seem. Oh and the pictures on the web site are old and not reflective of the current state of the facility. The new director, while probably nice, seems to cut and paste her responses on the various websites when someone posts a bad review. It's not personal but, I just want people to know the facts before moving their loved one in!!!

Review of Retreat At Conyers

Good marketing presentation for Retreat at Conyers by [name removed] was impressive. The facility grounds were scenic and the resident rooms were nice and spacious. The safety procedures during the current covid-19 were good and no known cases from staff or residents were reported. The aforementioned things could be rated at 3.5 Stars. The items listed below are rated at 1.5 stars here's why: a monthly care plan, which goes to the progress/issues a resident is having was never given until [date removed], our Mom became a resident in [date removed]. Transportation to medical appointments on scheduled days was provided. She was late for every appointment we rescheduled for her. Activities on-site and off-site as part of the package and prior to the pandemic [dates removed], we were not aware that any outside ventures took place. Wi-Fi - our resident (mom) has a computer and Alexa that she enjoyed prior to the pandemic and she never received the password info. Wi-Fi was something we were told, they were working on it. The staff, we were told, was caring and professional and that the Retreat at Conyers had a low turnover rate; their staff would get to know our mom and be attentive to her needs. We witnessed just the opposite. Seems that there was always someone new, they were unprofessional. When you made phone calls to the front desk to tell them about appointments or you were dropping off an item for your loved one, etc. you were never sure this information was relayed to the appropriate person; front desk staff would forget to give messages or leave a message which resulted in missed appointments or having to reschedule. The phone at the nurse's station in the Renaissance Building had not been in working order for over three months, you can never call even if you had a question. I truly consider Retreat at Conyers the bait-and-switch operation.

A bad choice for respite care

My mother was scheduled to have respite for 2 weeks while my husband and I went on a trip. This was close to my son's home, so they could visit her while we were gone. We got there on the date that was preset months before and the room was not ready. There was no bed, no linens, no TV. They rushed around setting up a bed. The dresser was obviously someone's used garage sale dresser with a stained top. They put in a TV, but never hooked it to cable, so she did not have TV for 2 weeks. My daughter in law told me on one of our facetime calls that she gave Mom a shower. It seems no one had given her a shower since her arrival. The room had no chair, just a bed. There was a lamp on a table. Nothing was decorated as the room I saw as a respite room when I evaluated the facility. My son described it as a prison cell with bare walls. He brought pictures from home to hang on the bare walls to make it feel more like a place to live and not a prison. I called the director when I found out Mom was not getting a bath. She said Mom would say she would wash up when they asked. I put her here for them to take care of her in my absence. Who would let a shower go for 2 weeks??? Thankfully, my daughter in law kept Mom clean.

Disappointing experience for my mother

Disappointing experience. Food is really poor to the point it makes my mother ill. Laundry and room cleaning are inconsistent. I have had to clean it myself and take her laundry to be cleaned. She has pushed her call button for assistance and it can take hours for them to respond. On top of that they raised her rates 9% in less than one year and acted like they were doing me a favor. My mother has lived there less than a year and I believe we are on the fourth director. It’s a revolving door of staff. We are looking to leave (as are others). Would not recommend.

I had to take my loved one from out of this place. Don't get me wrong, I thought this place was GORGEOUS when first toured from the outside building. Once in, the residents were quiet and appeared miserable. The Tour guide lady even brisk walked me through the place so fast, I couldn't even describe what was really there if I wanted to. They staff and its entirety act as if they are hiding something. An extremely high volume of miscommunication and unprofessionalism, is all that I was met with while their with my loved one. I have a better chance with keeping them home and paying a pre school, baby sitter to take care of them prior to what this facility offers with negativity.

Misplaced Priorities

The administration at Atria present the image that they are deeply invested in the care of your loved one. It gradually becomes clear that they are far more invested in collecting as much of your money as possible, while providing as little support as they can. As many reviewers pointed out, the administrative staff turnover has been exceedingly high. This has filtered down to impact the direct care staff in visible ways. The absence of creativity in programming and resident engagement is very troubling. Their capacity to solve challenges associated with aging with any level of creativity is abysmal. The residents ultimately pay the price for this. My mom was at Atria for several years, before being transferred to Hospice. The absence of compassion, sensitivity, and support through her entire stay was deeply troubling. I am unable to recapture her final years. I feel quite sad that they were spent in an environment that placed dollars far ahead of compassion.

I would not recommend if your family member needs memory care and is ambulatory. Expect to be told additional support...

Administration did not provide the services they presented us with when we signed on. We were told we could have a camera to monitor our patient, others had cameras, then we were not allowed to have a camera. I had to ask for the toilet and floor in front of to be cleaned often. Nurses, med tech and other staff on the floor were very pleasant and helpful. Administration staff said one thing and did another. There were mostly non ambulatory patients. My husband was able to walk, and was not often engaged in activities. He would wander up and down the halls, and I was told I needed to hire a sitter for him which I did. We were told there would be a ratio of 1 to 4 for patient care. That did not happen. They presented a glowing picture and they did not provide. This is a generous score. One day they provided slices of pizza for dinner for some and lasagna for others. When I ask for lasagna for my husband as he could not bite and chew the pizza they took his pizza away, and brought it back having been ground up in a food processor. Activities The staff was good but not a lot of engagement. Due to lack of supervision my husband fell several times. I was told I had to hire a sitter to keep him safe. It was prohibitive and I moved him to another place that truly had the ratio they said. I would not recommend if your family member needs memory care and is ambulatory. Expect to be told additional support is required at your expense.

They let my Mom develop cellulitis in both legs, leading to near amputation.

Last May, they let Ma stay in compression stockings for 3 months straight! Never assisted her with taking them off. She needs assisted living but they are greedy & want her money. Always fruit flies in her mo apt & they do nothing about it. She misses Dr. appts & shopping all the time due to van driver shortage. She can't take care of herself & her apt got broken into Thursday night, [date removed], while sleeping. Owner never investigated nor got back to me. This is frightening to say the least.

Horrible Management

My mom had a stroke on12-29, after she and I had planned on moving in November to the facility. Her short term memory suffered so she stayed in Chattanooga for Rehab. She made leaps and bounds thanks to ST and PT. The Physicians Medical Evaluation (PME) ordered mom was to be placed in AL. The wellness director, whose job is a facilitator - NOT A DECISION MAKER - took it upon himself to place my mother into memory care. Stroke victims need rest and those with short term memory need assistance with routine. The wellness director forced her to be woken every two hours during every night and she had to stay in memory care for 2.5 months before she was finally placed in AL. She did not get the PT or ST that were ordered by her physician until it was almost too late. My mother was extremely depressed and upset daily. So much more happened! We made upper management aware eventually causing my mother to be evicted due to lies from a staff member about me. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!!!

Nurses are ok rest is terrible

If we could give the overall a experience a 0, we would. They did not follow our requests, did not keep good communication which resulted in my father getting discharged, always told us multiple stories made it difficult to understand what the truth was. They were in the process of repainting so there was paint smell and obviously wall patching and not fully painted. For the tech staff 0 for the office staff we would give them a 3.5. Very disappointing experience and my father and us the family were not treated very well

I would say Beware of any Phoenix facility

The facility we were at closed, they transferred us to the Phoenix Johnson Ferry which was a far inferior facility with unhelpful staff. I have much worse things to say about them actually. The staff is very difficult to work with and even find when you're on site. Any feedback you give them just results in them trying to adjust your care plan and charge you more. In memory care they weren't even making sure the residents were going to the bathroom or in clean adult diapers. I would say Beware of any Phoenix faculty, they are closing many to condense them and trying to charge more at every turn
