Friend and Power of Attorney

My friend [name removed] has been at Peregrine Since Oct. 2018..In this short time I have seen such a positive change in her..Between the staff...meals... and weekly stimulation activities ... have all added to her improvement .Because of the good care given her I no longer worry about her on a daily basis anymore...I would recommend Peregrine to anyone who is suffering with Memory loss ..The staff fully is engaged with caring for their residents with this problem.

First week experiences

I found the staff very friendly and helpful. Having said that I still have a couple of things to work out. I was under the impression that he would have a "buddy" to help my father get to things the first couple of weeks. I also need to check on the medication schedule. What he is telling me it is is not what it needs to be. He loves the food and my family is very impressed with the quality and cleanliness of the facility.

Atria Memory care

We have visited multiple communities. This move has taken place from a similar facility to Atria due to a family move. It is something we have given a great deal of consideration as a family. My loved family member has only been at Atria for a month - hence we are still adjusting and working out personality "glitches", and are not yet able to offer a "great" review. We are very pleased with the care received, and the willingness of staff to work with and actually commit to his specific needs. I feel that a "great" review just might be pending.

Mixed review

My mother is more content here than I thought she would be. Her room is pleasant with a nice view, and there is lots of musical and other entertainment, and nice people who run the activities (hello, Darlene!). The PT and OT services are very much appreciated as well. That's the good part. The food seems to be adequate, but they just raised the prices for visitors to a ridiculous amount ($10 for breakfast, $14 for lunch) so I will never be eating there, just to get my jello with Kool Whip on top. The care is minimal, although the aides and med techs who stand in as aides try to do their best. For simply receiving medications twice a day and getting some help with bathing/dressing , the extra cost is $800 a month. Also, it seemed unfair that one month after I signed a lock-in monthly rental rate, I received a letter raising the care fees - which raises the monthly rate. (I'm sure we were warned this could happen in the small print of the contract.) Imagine that there is one aide on staff for 88 residents, except during the morning when there are one or sometimes two extra aides to give showers. Doing the Math, I believe this means that even with two aides on duty between 9 and 5, with no lunch breaks, each resident would be entitled to ten minutes of time with an aide per day. And most of the residents are quite obviously mentally feeble and/or physically weak. But, Atria management states that they "encourage independence." Still, even with a minimal staff, they seem to have a handle on all the residents and manage to create a pleasant and friendly ambiance. Atria is still a much more pleasant setting than a nursing home, and I do feel more secure with my mother there than when she was at home. At first, because of the price increases, and was going to look at other residences, but now that my mother has settled in, I'll probably have her stay at Atria rather than disrupt her again.

Atria Crossgates review

My Uncle just recently moved so I do not have a lot of experience with Atria @ Crossgates except that the people there are very friendly and the food and dining experience were positive. I am sure my Uncle will get 3 square meals and walking to the dining area gives him much needed excerise. I do however have an issue that the first night my uncle was there he fell in the shower while they were assisted him. They immediately called 911 and advise the family and luckily my uncle did not break any bones.

Tired, Worn Facility

We didn't care for that one so much. The staff seemed okay but the facility looked a little worn. We didn't like the rooms. It's was kind of threadbare. It just looked tired. We all felt the same about it so clearly it wasn't the right place for us.

Generally Good Place w/ some potential pitfalls, Buyer beware

We've had a bit of confusion w/ prescriptions, pharmacy, & medical appointments. Some things stated in their handbook aren't exactly the way they turn out. Their food service is also not as consistent as it could be. Often it can be rather slow & special orders are inconsistently correct. We have no safety or cleanliness concerns. The staff is helpful when asked directly.

Our family experience would recommend.

In general ALF's have issues with personal care aids. Reception Desk staff are wonderful. Activities staff too. Important to remember they are PRIVATE PAY. They do not take Medicaid and once you're $ runs out...good luck. I felt ignored by director, [name removed], and staff who does tours afterwards.

My husband was at Peregrine for approximately 5 weeks and they sent him to the hospital twice in that time period. He is now in a nursing home. I don't have any negative issues with Peregrine and found the staff very caring and helpful, although I am basing this on a very short time span.

Challenging Rules

My relative was tested at his facility to move into Peregrine. I had a moving company move his heavy items, and I moved the rest myself. When I arrived I noticed the residents all sitting in lined up chairs waiting for some entertainment. They all looked the same like manikins in a row. A few hours after he arrived there, his aid discovered that he had a bed sore, and the staff said he was not allowed to stay there with a bed sore. They sent him to the hospital. The hospital examined him and sent him back, but Peregrine refused him again and sent him back to the hospital. The bed sore was level 2 and Peregrine would not take him back until it was healed. Peregrine was going to hold his room until he was better. He contracted pneumonia twice, E-coli, and a bladder infection when he was at his rehab facility. Two months went by and Peregrine came to test him. They did not take him back, and he had to pay $[removed]+ for his less than one day stay at Peregrine.

Not recommended

My loved one was previously a resident at Peregrine Senior Living at Onondaga Hill and the overall experience was okay. To be honest, when my loved one first went there I thought it was great. But, it's more of the "looks" of the facility that fools you. Communication wasn't always the best. Meals were very good, my loved one definitely enjoyed the meals. I feel the turnover for aides seemed like a lot. I never knew who my loved one's aide was because they didn't always wear their name tags, and it seemed to be a different one all the time. I witnessed staff yelling at residents, also the medication tech was saying stuff out loud like she didn't get paid enough for what she had to do. For the cost, which went up 3 times in a year in a half, I wouldn't recommend. I moved my loved one to a different facility.

Very disappointed

I put him in there because he was falling and everybody said he would be safer in a home. He fell more there and wound up in the emergency room more than home. The last time I brought him home. He died 11 days later and it has crossed my mind that Mercy Hospital missed something but its water under the bridge. I was told that he had to go into that facility instead of the one on Sterling Drive because they had a better medical staff. They had aides passing out medications and were short staffed a lot. I don't think they had any RN's in the facility so I don't know how they got away with claiming a better medical staff. His case manager was a jerk who cost me $1000 because she didn't do her job. On top of that after causing me an extra day in that pigsty Buffalo Medical Center she said oh well it probably will only be a few bucks like money grows on trees. Most of the aides were great but I wish I would've kept him home.
