Read the fine print.

At first they seemed very nice and helpful. Then I got a call on April 29, 2017, a Saturday, saying we needed to com in a sign a contract the next day (before the end of April) to take advantage of a "special price." We went, and they wanted $6,600 to hold the room at the "special price." In the course of the conversation the salesman and the director told us four times that if my mother could not make it for some reason (she ended up needing to be in a nursing facility, not assisted living) we would get the money back. A week later, after our mother went back to the doctor for more x-rays, it turned out her hip was not healed. When I called Atria and asked them to refund the money, they said they needed confirmation in writing from her doctor, a stipulation they never made in our conversations. Our mother was in a nursing home in the Bronx! We live in upstate NY and Pennsylvania! We didn't even know the name of the doctor who examined her! They kept saying they "know how hard this is" and then made it even harder! Ultimately we got the full refund.

Review of Atria Shaker - Albany, NY

My friends are not happy there. Maybe it is just the loss of control over their lives that they are rebelling against and the loss of privacy - both part of the reality of being taken care of down to the distribution of their medicines. The adjustment is hard. The two bedroom apartment was the largest and nicest that we saw during our search. The bookkeeping of charges each month makes their bills difficult if not impossible to figure out (and I am helping them). It is not a regular amount and makes them uneasy because of course Atria takes these varying amounts out of their checking account directly. Are these just the usual complaints everywhere

Seemed nice

We toured this community when we were looking into care options for a loved one. It seemed like a nice enough place, but out of the few we looked at this seemed the most in need of some updates and renovations.

Didn't really like this one. Seemed too big for our Grandma's needs. Rooms were really nice...but I think she would not leave the room to participate in social activities. Staff presented themselves in too laid back a manner...and they said they wouldn't more than nudge a resident to go eat more than one meal a day.

Not Impressed

Father admitted to the Memory care unit about 2 PM and by the time we returned home he had fallen and was taken to the hospital. We then supplied 1:1 caregivers for 24 hrs but Atria said Dad did not need them during the day so we had caregivers scheduled for eves and nights. On the third day he fell again (they were short staffed and did not call us) and was admitted to the hospital for a brain bleed. He was ultimately transferred to Hospice from there and he died about 10 days later. Initially impressed with services they said they offered but did not see these happening again while we were there. Mostly the residents sat in a small area and watched TV. My father was only there for a total of three days. In those three days he was sent to the hospital twice. They wanted me to pay the full fees for admission and the entire month's stay. Avoided phone calls. I had to call corporate office just to get any replies from local Atria. Would Not Recommend memory care unit.

Problems at Atria.....

In a month when (1) the residents were quarantined in their rooms, due to a wide-ranging GI bug, and nobody could go out or come in (without a mask); and (2) there was a flying ant infestation in one wing that displaced residents from their rooms so that exterminators could spray, they actually charged me $3 extra on the monthly rent for a "tray fee". (presumably asking to have a meal brought to the room while rushing out to an event or an appointment.) Rather than giving us a discount for the quarantine days, or the displaced days, Atria decided to charge extra for a very small favor they did! I hadn't wanted to publicize these problems, but just couldn't handle the irony of the increased rent after the inconveniences of the last month.

There are some staff that care about the residents but not all. Starting with the administrators all they care about is making sure they cover up mistakes. None of them really care about the residents or what goes on. The blame is always on someone else. They really need to look into the menus for these residents & get opinions from them--they all complain about the food but it gets ignored. They don't care who they hire to take care of these people as long as they have a body there. A lot of the good employees are overlooked & taken for granted. These residents need more than just a place to live--they need more attention & care for their needs. The building itself is very nice for these residents. The activities are also great-there's a lot to do & the activities director is great with these residents. Its just to bad that the administrators (starting with the director) doesn't have enough compassion for these seniors. They're so sweet & deserve more.

Expensive lesson

Please remember that this organization is lead by a sales team. Our experience was one of hope in the beginning but due to health concerns of our loved one we did not think this facility could manage the many issues which were going on so we never took occupancy which was a very expensive lesson as no refund was allowed. The staff is very pleasant and friendly. Those residents who we came in contact with seemed very pleased with their surroundings. Please consider carefully the needs of your loved one before signing a contract. There are no refunds. Overall this would be a nice place for someone with minimal health concerns.

So sadly disappointed

While the facility is lovely and staff are wonderful, the food quality went downhill shortly after my parent arrived. It seems like a big company came in and bought up the Peregrine and now the food quality is really subpar. It’s so unfortunate.

Disappointed

There were issues after she moved there, sounds like change in how place was being run. Mom's condition deteriorated more so that didn't help either. We had to move her out and into another place several months ago. Peregrine was good to start, but really seemed to fall off, cost was getting excessive for what was actually provided and needed.
