Staff was unknowledgeable about basic rules and regulations and at one point, staff was seen rolling eyes at a resident. Completely unprofessional. Definite NO.

There was clearly not enough staff here. First thing in the morning there would be 3-4 staff in the building, after 2:30 there would be only two staff for roughly 40+ people. There were a couple of staff members that never stopped, they worked their hearts out. Needless to say the turnover rate was big here. The training wasn't very good here, especially for dementia, most of it was just one page of information. I don't feel it was safe there. The food was awful! It went from being incredible food to being awful. They started reheating the food in another building and then bringing it over. They went through 4 CEO's in the two years we were there. They removed medications my loved one was taking, without any communications with me. There were just a lot of safety issues here.

When we first moved my aunt into Horizon Bay (1 1/2 yrs. ago), we were pleased with the apartment, food, and personnel, although we did feel the fees for some of the optional services were a bit expensive compared to other facilities. The facility, however, was close to our home. After 6 mos., the food went so downhill and continued to do so until we had to move her out. She became anemic and would bearly eat their meals, with the exception of breakfast and an occassional lunch. The admininistrative staff changed and the nurse is a joke. When we spoke with the staff, they promised changes, but nothing happened or things got worse. I understand they have upgraded some of the apartment's kitchenette's and carpeting as clients moved out. I imagine that is a good thing since the dining room food is terrible. Residents we know who are still there are trying to find other facilities, many have friends/relatives take them food shopping for microwavable food. Others we knew have moved out. In addition, they raised the rent to the max and increased the all-ready high assistance fees even more. I would NOT recommend this facility to anyone.

My mother was there for a month before they checked her sugar levels! And they were giving her insulin daily! Nurses don't seem to care and rarely answer the call button in less than 10 or 15 minutes. I would hate to have an emergency and have to wait for them to walk down the hall to my room. Also, she had her [removed] while there along with several other elderly patients. Very expensive. I was told that once insurance ran out that it was going to be $250 a day. Way not worth the price.

Too close to noisey traffic and the railroad.

It cost me a lot of money to move here and nothing they told me came to pass. The food is nasty, you can't hardly eat it, and you either eat it, and they will cut you off at the 300 dollar mark at ten dollars a piece, or don't eat at all. I have tried to give it to other people who have visited, and they won't eat it either. It's cooked in an entirely different building, and they bring it out on big carts and wake me up every morning at 7:30, and not all the food is covered when they transport it. The dinning room is only open from 8-1, and the bistro is even nastier, what you get is a combination of all the vegetables they won't eat in the dinning room. I have lost my deposit they won't refund it. There is nothing going on here, no activities. there are apartments on all four sides of a courtyard three stories tall, nobody comes out. The laundry room has tile built up around the washing machine and it is uneven, and unsafe. Everyday has been something different. It's too big to even know what goes on. I hear that they have recently changed hands. Once I got here nobody came to tell me where anything was or help with anything at all. Everything you need is a different price and a seperate charge. Nobody has been friendly, I just don't have anything good to say about them.

This place is a disaster. They haven't had a manager in 18 months. No chef for months. No activities director at all, and nothing but a LVN was nothing but trouble. They do not have the people or ability to assist the elderly that live there. I have moved Mother out and brought her home with me for Christmas and then I am looking for a Nursing home. She need more help than Merrill Gardens can provide. Just to give her 3 pills a day 3 am and 2 pm they were charging Mother $610.00 per month. Her Doctor said he had never had such a unorganized and unco-operative home for the elderly.

My loved one was admitted and immediately fell. There were times the staff forgot to bring food for my loved one. The door was heavy and my loved one couldn't open the door to the hallway. There was an appointment that was scheduled, and the the staff didn't assist with the call for my loved one, while I was out of town. They allowed both drivers off on the same day my loved one had an appointment. The community told me that if I paid more, I would get better care for my loved one. I feel they lied about everything. They promised me they would help with the special needs of my loved one and they never did. The staff kept telling us that they were short staffed.

My loved one was there 8 weeks and she lost 20 pounds. I don't feel like my loved one was taken care of. Communication was not good and we were not kept updated with what was going on with my loved one. I would not recommend this community to others.

During the time our loved one was there, they fell numerous times from bed and had cuts and bruises. One fall the community called us to let us know it was nothing serious, but a week later our loved one went to the hospital, they took an x-ray and their hand had been fractured for a week. They were not administering the medication correctly, everyday something was wrong. They were supposed to get a medication patch everyday, and sometimes he would have multiple patched on, old patches or no patches on. They called us early in the morning saying our loved one was threatening anyone who came into the room, but after talking to the psychiatrist they believed it was because they were defending themselves. Dementia can change your whole personality, however our loved one is the kindest person and has never been in a fight their entire life.

There has been such a high turnover of staff. I'm having to make requests over and over again. I feel all the good people have left. Whispering Winds of Apple Valley just raised the rent on us. The fees will be removed daily and not monthly like it used to be. The food is horrible and the food is cold when it is delivered to the residents. I have nothing good to say about Whispering Winds of Apple Valley.

I would want others to know that all the advisories they give are false. They food is not what they say it is going to be and they do not do what they say they are going to do. I would not move my dog into this place. The equipment in the bathrooms to pull if something goes wrong, I accidentally pulled it and ran to tell them it was an accident and it turns out it was not even hooked up which I find very alarming. I even left things on the floor purposefully to see if they had come in to clean and they did not. I have nothing good to say about this facility.

I can’t say enough about this place as far as how bad it is. Main thing being severely understaffed. The DRS seems bothered or annoyed when you try to talk to her about your family members care plan. She always has a tone about her that comes across hateful. I’ve been told a week after positive testing on a resident that staff still hasn’t been tested and only just tested residents. Can’t see my dad to know for sure he is safe. Can’t get straight answers from anyone. Calls go unreturned. Only a handful of aids care the rest just don’t care at all and it is evident in their attitudes.

I just paid my bill. My Bill is never the same. Care levels are going up and down and misc charges etc. nobody know what they are doing.

I was convinced by the solana vintage park community sales/marketing personnel back in [date removed] (stay with brookdale and save $) to move my dad from independent living to this assisted living community. After signing all paperwork, I went to get keys to move in and they informed me they changed their mind and decided my father was not suited for their community. Needless to say I moved on and found him another community for the last year and a half. Unfortunately, the community we moved to does not provide adequate daily activities for my father. Good luck in finding a community that really cares for the residents more than themselves.

I have a family member who is receiving care here. At first everything was going fine, then we started having problems with medications not being given and clothes missing. Myself and several members of the family have talked to the Nurse Director, [name removed] about the meds- she seems uninterested, rude, and not alert to what is happening. When a Director of Nurses is clueless like [name removed], the nurses beneath her will be as well. My family and I are discussing taking our family member out of here because the quality of care is poor, medications are not given, and clothes go missing- no one ,not even the leadership knows what is going on. This facility use to be good, but somewhere along the way it has gone wrong. Do not put your family member here.

The management staff has been the worst experience I have ever dealt with. There needs to be more a background check on their residents instead of let anyone sign a lease. My experience has been nothing but horrible. Yes they are inexpensive for a independent care, but your loved one is exposed to the elements and walks a long way to eat and has one meal a day for that price.

After being accepted into the community, with an initial payment of over $5000, my mother was moved out in the middle of the night for a non-emergancy concern to a hospital of their choosing, after only 5 days. She spent the next month at this facility as Brookdale would not allow her to return due to a non stageable minor sore on her skin. Brookdale stated that they were not able to maintain her with this concern. She was abused at the hospital they sent her to and after a month we moved her out to another care home as Brookdale would not have her back. During her absence from Brookdale, she was re-evaluated several times(even though she was not present) and charges were added to her standard billing to the tune of $1600+ per month. We refused to pay any cost and Brookdale continued to charge us for services that could not have occured. Billing was sent to collections and we under disbelief, had to pay after threats of legal action. She was at the Brookdale facility for 5 days and we lost a total of approx. $14000. This is an unethical and total criminal enterprise, in my opinion. STAY AWAY AT ALL COST.
