Independent Living

I had wanted to tour this community because I had heard good things about it. But after doing my research about the community it was geared for more independent living people and I just didn't feel that they would have been able to handle my mothers care level needs so I didn't even bother to go in. However, from outside of the building, it looked very nice and well maintained.

Our 2 week experience

We have only been here at the Quail Creek Emeritus just over 2 weeks and are getting acquainted with both the staff and the residents. Everyone one is friendly and eager to make us feel at home. The food leaves a little to be desired, but it fills the space. It seems as tho the orders are taken, but the cook doesn't speak enough English to fill the orders as given, The activities director is Super and cares deeply for the patients! She keeps us busy doing arts and traveling to the stores, doctor's appointments and fun excursions.

General information

We were disappointed to find out at a Dr. visit that medication had not been requested. The facility told us the medication had been requested. Residents receive what they order in the dining room. I did not witness staff encouraging residents to eat or offer other items when they did not eat. Staff are very friendly to residents and family. Facility is clean.

My dad lives there and we chose it because I love the location and I love the fact that it was a smaller facility. Also, the staff has been there a long time. The staff is very friendly, and the care staff are all CNA's. Dad is doing very well there - the setup is nice, and the food is great. We were lucky to get a room right away, and they made sure to have a table in the dining room that's close to his room so he doesn't have to walk too far. We're paying for the higher level of care but I don't know if he's actually getting that care. I think they're supposed to have a doctor or a nurse there at least once a month, but we'll be talking more with them to find out what that level of care actually is. We're still pretty new there. They do have activities but they're not my dad's cup of tea.

Our experience so far

I only gave a 3 because of the new management and how they came in. The transition was not very good and there was not a lot of communication to the families, they also fired all of the previous staff that we loved. There are times I try to call and no one answers the call. When someone is at the front desk, they have been very helpful with updating me and letting me know how she is doing. I have eaten here and the food is pretty good. I would recommend them, but they are still trying to adjust to the new management and I think it will get better as time goes on.

Not a bad place to live

When I first started my search for a place to live, I really didn’t know where to go. I was recommended to look into Quail Creek because of A Place for Mom and overall it gave me a good impression just from the tour. Everyone seemed friendly and the residents are really great to talk to. They’re personable and cheerful and I’ve already made a lot of friends. The staff answers all of my questions that I have and they are helpful when I need them to be. The food is good, there’s plenty of it, and it’s pretty nutritious – it’s even helped lower my blood sugar. Everything stays clean, they help me when I need to bathe, and they take all the trash out regularly. They do offer laundry as well, that’s just not something that I take advantage of. We have outings once a week to Walmart, sometimes other places like ice cream shops, and there are dominoes, bingo, and board games. Quail Creek has a great price and what you pay for is what you get. It’s a really good deal. There’s plenty of help and overall I’m pretty happy here. I would definitely recommend this community to others.

Kind Community

My mother is now in rehab, she gonna need more care than they care offer. It is a nice community, and everybody did try their best to care for her and her needs. The staff was very kind and helpful. She had a bad fall, but I do not blame them. This is a nice community for the right person.

It's kind of a mixed bag.

It's kind of a mixed bag. We have had lots of issues we have had to bring up to them. They have been good to respond to me, in general. The staff is shorthanded. The food isn't consistent. It's a nice place, but the atmosphere isn't as homey as the last place she was.

they seem to be more reactive, than proactive, and that is frustrating.

It's okay. My dad complains about the food a little bit, but I think that is just the general case everywhere. I've noticed the air filter is a little dirty. When we first moved the room was dirty and we had to clean it. We did have an issue with billing. In the beginning they were very persistent and accommodating with the price, I liked the way they kept up with us. Since we have moved in though they seem to be more reactive, than proactive, and that is frustrating.

We've Had Some Issues With The Care

Based on what we've experienced so far, I'll be nice and give them 3. The cost is great and they seem to have a lot of activities but we've been having some issues with the care. Number one, the medication. They stated that they were giving my father-in-law his medication and he said he wasn't. My brother-in-law went in there and found that his presciptions has not been filled by Emeritus. When we asked them about it, no one could give us an answer. Also my father-in-law takes ensure and he's supposed to take it 3 times a day and he said he was only getting one. I'm not pleased with them on that. I have to take a trip from Texas to find out what's going on. We've stopped doing the ensure through them and we're tying to make unannounced visits. We're not ready to move him but the radar is up. The food is great. My in-laws have actually gained weight which is great. I'm really pleased with that.

Brookdale needs improvement!

It is difficult for Brookdale to keep qualified staff. Especially shocking is that the facility employed an LPN as the Director of Nursing who spoke to families as if she knew the residents well. It was evident by her lack of knowledge that she did not. Yet Brookdale allowed her to be the one monitoring special care. In addition, there are employees who have no CNA certification or training and are still taking care of our most valued citizens who need a higher level of care. Our family member was lovingly cared for by a FEW staff members but many are overworked, underpaid and undertrained. I would not recommend Brookdale Assisted Living.

Not too impressed

Most help is good and they go out of their way to help. The flier says handicap accessible, but it really is not. The independent apartments are not made for walkers and wheelchairs to get around, very narrow entries into the bathrooms. Showers are not zero entry. They say you can have pets, but they are very discriminative towards which ones you can have. When they have trips for residents, not everyone is asked to go. Administration is not very confidential and seems to only listen to certain residents' issues and believe what they are hearing without checking out the other side of the story. Lots of negative comments to residents without much if any positive feedback. Seem to only look for problems and wait for things to happen to scold residents instead of trying to problem solve to make things good for everyone.

Happy for a while

I moved my mother there when it was Emeritus. Everything was perfect. The food was excellent! Mom was in pretty bad shape and was cared for in the best possible way. The management was superb! Then it was changed to Brookdale. Left much to be desired. The food quality went down somewhat. The staff wasn't nearly as happy. However, mom was still cared for in a great and sufficient way. Then it was changed AGAIN to Quail Creek. Wow. What a horrible decision to have Grace Management take over. EVERYTHING declined. I watched the staff quit and go elsewhere. Thank God our favorite 2 stayed on board! I don't know what we would have done without them! The food quality was a disgrace. The cook was really good, but I'm sure she didn't have enough money to get what she needed for a decent menu. They terminated who I thought was the best manager they have ever had. She cared, she worked hard, the residents loved her, she had the best communication skills and made sure everyone was happy and went out of her way, on her own time, to make sure things were the way they should be. Then a new person came in who showed no care at all for the residents. She never even made eye contact with them! I know this because I watched her regularly! Seems like all Grace Management was interested in was collecting rent. Not much beyond that. Four years ago, I would have referred this facility to anyone! I wouldn't let my dog live there now! And it's a shame. My mom is now with Jesus and all-in-all, she was happy there because the workers took such good care of her. They all loved her and she loved them back. This place needs some serious work in order to attract new residents. I was told years ago they were going to remodel. It looks like something from the 1960's. The carpet is unexplainable, especially after all the past "accidents" which happened on the carpet. And they need to modify their menu and make it more desirable and nutricious.

Poor Customer Service

The facility is nice and clean. The food was good. However, when we moved her to another location that had Medicaire Advantage, they did not send all of her medicines with her. 1 medicine had a co-pay of $250. It had to fight with her pharmacy and insurance company for over 6 months after she passed. Emeritus was NO HELP. Did not return calls or emails. The bottom line is. they treat you ok while you are there, but once the money stops coming in they could care less. VERY Dissapointed.
