They get a 2 only because admissions was very nice and fast moving. McArthur kicked my mother out at the end of two weeks. They told me she'd be a good fit, but they were unable to give her the care she needed. They accepted her in the beginning because all they care about is money. She needed a nursing home, but McArthur Manor was the only place that had an immediate opening while I worked on getting her into an actual nursing home. Would not recommend for anyone that needs any kind of help.

In memory care, they would say my father refused showers so they would skip the shower. I would come there twice a week and find him in the same clothes I left him in and with a soiled adult diaper. I would have him get in the shower and change him. Then the pattern would repeat. I would say the assisted living is good but the memory care needs more training and oversight.

Absolutely too many turn-overs in staff. Request for maintenance services archaic and nothing is on hand for “fixes”; always need to be ordered; that takes forever. Furniture in Memory Care is dirty; needs furniture that can be “wiped” with disinfectant. Need deep housekeeping in all levels of care; presently just a light overall Since I have had 2 family members in AL and Memory Care, the food has always been an issue. In AL people were always asking for breads, butter, some condiments to enhance meals. In Memory Care I would not want to eat the meals. They seem to put food on plates with no regard to making it look appealing.

Overall, I would give it a below average rating based on what I witnessed there. I would give it a failing rating based my mom's experience there. It was more of an independent living facility. Unacceptable level of care because of under staffing. My mom felt isolated, unheard and uncared for there. I had to employ an independent caregiver to cover my moms basic needs - bathing, dressing, laundry, etc. It was recommended by an independent living facility recommended by you after discussing my moms needs. My mom also felt it was a good facility based on what she had heard from friends.

Meals and dining - I haven't tasted the food. This is based on what [name removed] says about the food. In general we have been disappointed in the director, financial staff, and the management of the facility. Paperwork is not processed in a timely manner and it is hard to talk to them. They still go to [name removed] like she has it all together and do not keep the POA informed.

The one thing they need to do is replace the Executive Director at Richland Square. They need someone that cares for the employees and residents. Someone that can motivate everyone to make it a doable workplace. After they let our Mom fall (only being there 12 days) (with 2 attendants in the room) receiving 5 stitches in her forehead, the Executive Director guaranteed us saying, "She WILL fall again" with zero care or concern. As a matter of fact, she said it angrily because we told them the doctors made a comment that our Mom was having congestive heart failure which is why her legs and feet swelled out of her pants and shoes and if the nurse that comes once a week couldn't get to her to remedy the situation, they should have sent her to the hospital. It should not have gone on like that for 2 weeks. That is when she assured us that she ABSOLUTELY WILL fall again. That was the last straw. My mom also had no clean clothes, to the point that they were putting clothes on her from lost and found or whatever. She had urine on all of her clothes, ruined a brand new chair with urine EVERYWHERE, was left in her room stuck in her chair not taking her to breakfast. We never could find her wheelchair that she stayed in every day. They also messed up her meds by giving night meds at 9 in the morning. The list just goes on. This facility needs restructuring and care training. [Name removed], is a GREAT saleswoman and will set the place up for the appointments to seem wonderful and then comes the total disappointments and unbelievable care of our loved one.

Staff that "sold" Brookdale to me, were obviously selling a different experience from what our family experienced! Staff were non-empathetic to my Dad's needs at times. Specifically, declining to help him with his needs! It appears that Brookdale hires the least experienced personnel (because that is cheaper for them) and that their staff is really not equipped to provide adequate care to their residents. It's obvious "Best Practice" is not priority for Brookdale. I understand this is a business, however based on our experience, I would recommend to others that they should try other options for senior living.

I said very clearly that my husband needed assistance toileting but when I wasn't there he only seemed to get assistance in the morning and maybe at night. I had to clean feces from all over the bathroom several times as well as from under his fingernails. I made it very clear he has stage 4 kidney disease yet water was only offered at meal times until we provided a mini fridge for his room and I supplied him with 6 bottles of water each day. They consistently served him food I explicitly told them he would not eat. If they give a residents meds at night, they wake them up to give them to them around 9:30-10:00 pm instead of prior to them retiring for the night. Most residents are in their room except for meals or they sit/nap in front of the TV in the living room. I wanted him to receive socialization instead of watching TV all day long and most of the time when I wasn't there he was in his room watching TV. Now he's going to adult day care three days a week and is getting socialization and it's a much better situation. He did not leave on good terms. When I checked him out I didn't realize they only gave me 2 day's worth of meds...they didn't send any of the refills so I had to scramble to get new scripts for him so he wouldn't miss any doses of his meds, especially his BP meds. I feel really bad for some of the residents because while my loved one was there and I was visiting I could go get a CNA to let them back into their rooms so they could toilet, ask for toilet paper for them for their bathrooms, paper towels, etc. A lot of them do not have family visiting regularly and don't have anyone to advocate for them.

In all fairness, the facility seems pleasant, and it was very convenient to our home. After assessing Mom at our home, Manning lobbied hard to get Mom settled there, and so we chose it. Mom was less than thrilled, but seemed to be accepting. But her emotions and cognition quickly deteriorated. The next few days she continued to be somewhat belligerent, but later seemed to calm down.. But even that soon, Manning wanted her out. She had found the locked-and-alarmed fire exit doors, and they feared she was a flight risk. So, after a one-month residency, another transition for Mom. I don't believe that Mom received all the attention that had been promised. It appeared that the linens had not been changed weekly---or possibly not at all. Much soiled clothing was not being washed, and several items disappeared. They said they could not convince her to take any meds, nor bathe. For the right resident, Manning might work out OK, but for my Mom, it was a very poor fit.

At first the facility seemed to be welcoming and open in terms of communication. Hindsight lets me believe it was because they were not at capacity, although that is opinion. Within the first two weeks, my loved one escaped through the garden. The staff did not contact us until AFTER they found her, she had been gone for at least an hour. For after hours visits (after 8pm), we had to be buzzed in and out of the facility. There were instances that we had to wake staff up off of the sofa to be buzzed out. Within six months of our loved one's arrival, they had moved her to the highest level of care without notifying us that there was an evaluation or that they were witnessing deterioration. During her time there, they took her to the hospital on multiple occasions, NEVER notifying us until we received bills. They tests they gave permission to were ridiculous. Overall, the facility looked good, but our loved one's room was a different story. We often saw trash piled, brought her laundry home to do it, noticed that sheets were missing, and saw clothes that weren't hers. Saturated sheets would be left in the hamper, so the room smelled horrible. There were a few occasions where we had to clean feces off of the wall. I don't believe that cleaning services came. The food smelled good, came lukewarm in Styrofoam containers, but was elementary style school meals. Within the last 8-10 weeks of her life, they asked us to bring in a sitter service as our loved one was becoming a bit catatonic and would fall off sofas or out of her wheelchair that they didn't engage the brakes on. I honestly don't feel like they were caring for her much at all. They started to care when she was actually dying, they came in to say their goodbyes. I understand that it is a business, but as we were bedside listening to her respirations slow, a tour was being given by the facility director right outside of her door. I overheard the director tell the couple who were touring "These rooms are more private and we will have an opening here shortly." The lack of tact was deplorable. When she passed a few hours later, the hospice nurse and social worker asked us to step outside the room as our loved one was prepared for transport. The same director giving another tour told the couple touring that the room (one next to ours) had a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, come on, come take a look. I was terrified that they would walk into our room. The husband seemed to have quickly understood what had JUST happened and grabbed his wife from entering the room. The director simply looked at my husband and I and asked if we were having a good day. Overall, for us: Understaffing, lack of interest, and lack of support equal an experience I do not wish on other families.

Since [date removed] the facility has lost over a dozen tenured CNA employees. The physical facility is not as clean as it once was, inside and outside are in need. The food is below standard after Navion changed vendors in [date removed]. Food choices and menus are limited by Navion rules. Wait times are long after necklace pager is activated. Second and overnight shifts are staffed by agency employees.

I would recommend you choose another community for your loved one. The food is very minimal for the residents. There are times my loved has received hot dogs or sandwiches for dinner. The price my loved one is paying doesn't justify the small amount of food my loved one is receiving. There are three meals a day served to the residents, and the dining room has had low staffing to assist with providing the residents with choices for meals.

I wouldn't recommend the community to others for their loved ones. My loved one declined after being in the community. Even after my loved one was declining the staff would continue to care for my loved one the same. The times that my loved one needed assistance with toileting and they would just leave the urinal with my loved one and didn't assist my loved one, for example. There were multiple times that family members were visiting my loved one, and the call button was pushed, and no staff responded. In this case, my loved one had to have the family members assist with the care and this was upsetting to use. I didn't feel the aides were attentive to my loved one's needs. Hospice came in and stated my loved one needed to be moved to a hospice house. The community tried to stop our loved one from leaving the community, and this was very upsetting to the family. The community was trying to convince the family that they could provide the same care, and we found out they couldn't after moving to the hospice house.
