Good for independent living, not so much for one who needs assistance

Maplewood looks great at first glance, and there are many positive things about it. However there are some serious operational problems that I should have known about had I read more reviews and not taken one friend's recommendation as gospel. I think it would be a good fit for a relatively self sufficient resident who is looking for independent living or assisted but with minimal assistance. it is not so good for my loved one who needs a fair amount of prodding and assistance. Often she is left in bed for well over 12 hours and noone gets her up in the morning for breakfast unless I intervene. Lots of management turnover. Aides don't seem particularly happy or engaged. Food is great, facilities clean and inviting. Management take note.

Assisted Living versus Memory Care

Wonderful place for assisted living, but everyone on staff needs more training before "Maplewood at Cuyahoga Falls" can be qualified as a Memory Care Facility for the treatment of residents dealing with Alzheimer's disease. Hoping the staff will learn how to provide full assistance where it is really needed the most. Good Luck :)

Don't look too deep

The facility is clean and well maintained - inside and out. And then there's everything else. Limited activities leave the residents bored and disengaged. As stated by another reviewer, residents without memory issues are not going to be stimulated and will soon be depressed. The sporadic arts & crafts sessions are well intentioned but would be better suited to kindergarteners. The offerings in the dining room are limited, served lukewarm at best, and let's just say that it's fortunate no one living there is in a rush to get anywhere because service is very slow. This is really a shame since mealtime is something which most assisted living residents look forward to. There's an add-on charge for everything so make sure you know what you'll need (laundry service, medication administration, mealtime assistance, hair & nail salon, etc.) and check the prices before you sign up. Many residents have personal aides that help them so if those families felt it to be necessary, that tells you something about the availability and/or cost of staff assistance. Finally, it becomes more and more difficult to make friends as we get older. I don't think most new residents really want to be in an assisted living facility so it's incumbent upon the staff to engage them early and create a sense of belonging. That needs to involve more than remembering their name and saying hello when they walk by. The elderly have their cliques too and without more activities to pull residents together, the place feels more like a mid-range hotel and less like home.

More Like a Hotel than Care

After 6 mths at maplewood in 2022 my Dad moved out to Sunrise in East Brunswick. maplewood services were poor. Staff shortages led to neglect. For example - 3 people overnight watching 21 people in memory care residents and an additional 10 people in AL on that floor. If you were leaving after 8pm, you would find people wandering - plenty of falls. I wouldn't put an animal in maplewood and I told their executive director that. Staff turnover at Maplewood was like a revolving door. Once we moved him, dad spent from the remainder of 2022 until his death this year extremely well cared for at [facility removed].

More Independent than Assisted Living - Do your Research

Limited staff and compassion for Assisted Living needs. While some seniors will thrive with limited support in this facility, those that need more help (toileting, dressing, bathing) will end up at in the memory care unit - as that is where they have staff. Overnight staff is very limited - only 3 people for all of the residents. If your senior needs help - you will be asked to provide private aides (on top of your level of care). My parents felt rushed and anxious with the care. With a Covid outbreak - they will ask you to get aides to care for your parent - and if that aide needs a chair outside the room, don’t ask. Told that appearance for tours is a priority. Response times to care also lacks - often when you are visiting - you are on your own if your parents need help.

Looks pretty

The best thing we can say is it looks pretty. Unfortunately for our family it did not live up to the brochure and presentation. We don’t recommend . The memory care program consisted mainly of Ted talks and you tube videos. There wasn’t enough staff. At meal times some of the residents needed cueing and help to eat but no one helped them. The food wasn’t farm to table as advertised, we saw cafeteria food , hamburgers, hot dogs and turkey roll. Our family member was unhappy with the care so we moved out. This program is quite high end and at [fee removed] per month it should be better. We do not recommend.

Unhappy with the services

I'm not happy with community. The housekeeping staff is horrible due to the beds not being made correctly, linens not being changed, have to ask for wastebasket be empty, and the bathrooms aren't cleaned like they should. The daily care such as feet being washed and weekly showers they have ignored the family's request. There is no follow up with the staff with outside providers of my loved one.

Needs more Staff

They do not follow through with what they say they are going to do in the way of care. The wait times were long for staff when you called. They kept losing his clothes and his sheets. He was there for 5 months and they lost 6 sets of sheets even though we had his name all over them. The promised to feed him when we were not there and they did not do it. The food was good. The room sizes are good. They could use more benches in the hallways for folk to sit down. They have a nice outdoor space. The activity center where all the chairs were was usually dirty. They were understaffed.

Not for those who need assistance

The two other reviews that mention that this place is good for those who don't need real assistance but not for those who do is completely spot on. It's a beautiful facility and they have decent activities. But they do not know how to take care of people who have medical or psychological needs. I agree that turnover there is part of the problem. They keep losing their leadership. Communication is TERRIBLE. I think it is totally profit driven and they should spend less money on looks and more on services. I would post details but my loved one is still there and I'm afraid they will retaliate against her. Will post more once she's out.

Meet with Staff Before The Move In

Beautiful facility, staff very friendly, patients very friendly, BUT.. no communication WITHIN staff: different opinions or reports to us from SAME staff or different answers regarding a problem from DIFFERENT staff. Although staff was pleasant, I didn't feel they knew or remembered to care for them as people with unique types of Dementia at different levels. At times they were disheveled, their apartment was dirty, and we still were doing nursing care. when visiting. ADVICE: Before moving your parent(s) in, meet with staff, go over their medical history, their meds, what works, what they need help in, who they should call, and who YOU can call, This will help with a smooth transition, avoid unnecessary problems, and make this work.

Dissatisfied

At first we were very excited, then a few months into it we're finding several issues aren't being addressed very small basic issues like Landscaping while the front of the building looks beautiful the back of the building not so much. In other sections of Maplewood I don't feel that the Staffing is adequate often times I'm there I see that it's very understaffed and it's one nurse having to tend to multiple different patients while I understand it's difficult to hire people that is not our problem, they charge a substantial amount of money to feel safe and cared for... Very disappointing because it feels as though they can put on a dog-and-pony show for the folks from Corporate but the people that are actually paying the fee on a monthly basis have to wait on very basic needs till they can get to them, it is a beautiful place and at first we were very happy there are several great things about it which is why we ultimately decided to go there in addition to offering us peace of mind unfortunately now we're questioning our decision, I feel that there are quite a few shortcomings that could easily be fixed unfortunately to the powers-that-be over there these aren't viewed as a priority.

Maplewood has unrealized potential.

My mother in law spent 5 years at Maplewood in Newtown (2012-2018). It is amazing how quickly she flourished ; water, good meals, surrounded by friends from the past and her family and successful encouragement to participate in activities (in & out of her new home). Staff were always patient and caring. Unfortunately staff turn over seemed to be more than average. Consistency of care lacked & communication was insufficient and/or simply misinterpreted. Her financial resources quickly were used up by the end of 5 years. Costs increased significantly, mostly due to facility needs, not entirely due to care needs. During our intake (2012) my mother in law expressed her worse fear, which was "to be kicked to the curb". She was assured her new "home" would not do that. By 2018 Maplewood was "kicking her to the curb". Regrettably, these last few months of my mother in laws stay at Maplewood were not her best. She fractured her hip sometime during the night (unbeknownst to staff) , but was able to tuck herself back into bed. Morning staff noted she was in pain when they tried to get her up for breakfast, and she was then sent to the ER. Later during these same few months, family noted a missing front tooth. Staff were unaware. Family was concerned, asked for oral evaluation by Onsite dentist. But that Dentist was unable to see her for another 3 months. Shortly after this incident while in a common area of the Tides unit she "tripped & fell" (and fractured her hip again!!!) during a verbal altercation with another resident. Unfortunately staff were not in this area when this accident happened. Maplewood does have cameras in these common areas; but, we have been told that they are old and do not capture images well. It would behoove Maplewood to increase resident care staffing, pay them better than average pay (Maplewood is considered a first class community , their staff should be compendated appropriately) , staff should be better trained in matters concerning work with residents experiencing symptoms of dementia. Many funds are spent on cosmetic updates to the facility, perhaps updating the cameras would be helpful, both for security as well as safety of the residents & staff. And it would have been nice if Maplewood did have a few Medicare/ Medicaid beds available for those residents who have spent 1/2 million + toward their care there already.

Never put a loved one here.

Maplewood at Strawberry Hill dispensed morphine to my mother without authorization. My mother died that day. Strawberry Hill was found by the police to have dispensed the morphine and to then modify my mother's prescription drug dispensing records for that medication. A police report was filed and a full investigation was commenced by the Norwalk police department. My mother was forced to undergo an autopsy by the medical examiner. I will never forgive myself for placing her in this facility.

Not transparent/Website extremely misleading

If you read over the website or take a tour the place sounds too good to be true and it is. What they sell in terms of care, assistance and programming vs what they actually deliver are VERY very different. If you start asking questions you will get bounced from one person to the next. The director of Nursing will tell you to talk to the memory care coordinator who will then say it's a clinical decision. round and round... Over the course of weeks I spent there with a parent who was paying for the highest level of care, I learned first hand that just about everything they claimed during our tour was false and they have no problem leaving someone in there room alone all day. Not waking them for meals and just leaving a tray of food in the room to get cold. When your loved one begs you to get out of there because they're lonely and depressed you should listen. My loved family member pleaded not to be left to die alone there because that is how they felt there.

Make sure you like the staff before committing to placing your parents in a facility. Make a few visits to a facility and come prepared with questions. Take the time to try to get to know who all the key players will be ie all department heads but also the roles of people who will interact with your parents or parent on a day to day basis. Visit often and without warning once your parent is placed so that you can see what is happening when they don’t know you are coming. Also, make sure that if you want your parent to stay at the facility until end of life, that they have the necessary care and staffing to do this. The communication at Maplewood was terrible. My sister and I were proactive, so we would request meetings and phone calls that were not promptly returned. The move in process was very stressful. Not the move itself but leading up to it. We had asked for a lease several times, asking that it be submitted to my sister who had power of attorney in a timely fashion so that she could review it before leaving to go out of town. It wasn’t submitted until 5pm the night before she left and the lease was 70 pages long! There were two weeks from the time we toured to the day we got the lease. Two weeks. She had to scramble the next day to sign it and get necessary signatures as well as arrange all the deposits. They said they wouldn’t allow my father to move in until all this was settled. And I had already scheduled a bed and other items to be delivered in time for a move- in that had a tight time frame. It was so chaotic and unorganized and was a source of intense stress at a time that is already inherently stressful. The housekeeping staff seemed very friendly. Hard to judge because my father wasn’t there for long, only two weeks, but it always seemed very clean. Hard to judge the meals because my father wasn’t there for long, but he said they weren’t good and reviews I’ve read said that their whole farm to table thing is not accurate at all. That they experienced hot dogs and pasta. A week into my father’s move there, when his full time aide had left that we hired personally, he fell while out of his wheelchair. He was in the Living Room with other people on his floor. They are supposed to have aides watching them all the time. No one could tell us how it happened, just that it shouldn’t have happened. Inexcusable especially given how expensive these places are. The only staff I really liked was the director of the memory care floor. My suggestions for improvement- everything.

My mother DIED after being found unresponsive at Maplewood Stony Hill! RUN!! Check the immense amount of complaints against them at The State of CT Dept of Public Health. They have been found guilty and are NOT in compliance with safety checks, communication-check for yourself. My mother was found covered in vomit and mucous for HOURS because they didn't check on her, in her memory care room!! They don't care about your loved ones, they care about the money. To add further pain to my family, they even gave my mother her medications 3 DAYS AFTER SHE PASSED! Forget stimulation, my mother was coloring out of a child's coloring book! Don't walk away….Run! Your loved one deserves dignity, compassion, respect, and above all, care. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN HERE!

Terrible

When I call the Director [name removed] she does not respond to or acknowledge my calls. Very unprofessional. Now, when I send a package to my family member it is not only opened by the staff, but my family member has to go to reception and demand the contents of the package. It’s a disgrace on how the residents and family are treated.

run away

both my niece and husband observed a resident in a wheelchair being yelled at and hit by a staff member. other family members came to visit and saw residents in wheelchairs sitting in a quiet dark room, while the staff were on their phones. when they asked them what was going on, they replied that the tv isn't working. it took for my family to give them a hard time for them to roll a new tv in. I've personally found my mom in her room with the door closed, dark and no tv in the middle of the day. the aide working with my loved one (who requires a wheelchair) left her in the bathroom and she fell and hit her head. we had to rush her to the hospital. although it wasn't completely explained, I believe the aide left my mom standing/holding on to the bar because that's the only position that makes sense for the type of injury she sustained. they have a policy that if you move your loved one out, you need to give them a 30 days notice. we sent an email to the district manager explaining why we were leaving and they still wanted their money. we found this completely unacceptable because not only are we paying for services and care that won't be used; but the nature of why she was being moved was caused by one of their staff. contractually, we understand that - but we're still very upset as this was an emergent circumstance. it's also just not right considering what happened to her. we're glad that we got out her out before they had a big Covid outbreak a short while later. during the move out process, the maintenance man helped me take her belongings out and the nurse passed along her medication, but that was it. no one called and apologized for what happened or to say goodbye. no one asked what they could do to improve or where they went wrong. if I worked there, I would've asked, and I found that entirely unusual. they also screwed up our billing at one point. they sent the insurance company an invoice for the days she wasn't there and that took months to resolve. anyone who has financial struggles will likely be struggling even more because their billing department just seems inefficient. the building itself its nice and we really took our time to look into this community. we thought that this would be a good place, but it just turned out to be horrible. the entrance is like a prison, you have to go down to the basement and then through a series of different floors and locked doors. the doors required an access code and only the staff had it, they were never willing to provide us our own code. sometimes we had trouble leaving because of the locked doors. there's a big turnover with administration as well. they have all of these activities for the independent/assisted living floors, but nothing for the memory care residents. the residents all seemed to be checked out, and we see a significant difference between Maplewood residents and the new community's residents. the staff there are way more attentive and engaging. the new community also gave us a fob so that we can enter the building on our own. they also have an automated Covid checkpoint before you enter, it's just all around significantly better. we were able to evaluate this community from the perspective of a doctor and a nurse, who both have tons of personal experience in senior care. there are simple things that they could do to make this place better. we don't have any other information on any other Maplewood location; but we do not recommend the one in Darien. the seniors there are at a serious disadvantage. there were numerous reasons why we did not have a good experience. we're just happy that we were able to get her out in time. she's much better at the new community and all of the issues we had at Maplewood, we don't have there.

tour review

Our family had an in person tour and we did not like the staff we met and we did not like the facility itself.
