A Place for Mom has scored Maplewood Senior Living with 9.6 out of 10 using our proprietary review score based on 219 reviews in the last 2 years. Over all time, Maplewood Senior Living has 932 reviews with an average "overall experience" of 4.6 out of 5.
Maplewood is a lovely place with a caring staff. The main problem is the dining room food and service. It is billed as "farm to table" and it is not. The food is not great. The service in the dining room, though friendly and kind, is unbearably slow. Sometimes waiting half an hour for food. Everyone at a table getting served at different times. Causes residents unneeded stress and irritation. Non-dining room management and staff should sit in the dining room to facilitate conversation (which elderly people find difficult) and to experience the frustration the residents have to go through three times a day. The activities are lacking in the sense that there are things to go to (movies in the living room, music performances, trips out to dinner), but there is nothing to do. No arts and crafts, workshops, certainly nothing that would be appealing to intelligent elderly people. The residents who do not need memory care have no artistic or creative outlets. There is no gym or exercise or therapy space.

I think they do a nice job at Maplewood at Orange in terms of the cleanliness of the facility, and the staff are generally very friendly. However I do think their actual care practices could stand to be improved. I feel like sometimes there is a lack of communication between the staff about my loved ones care needs, and I don't feel like they are entirely on top of her medications.

This was one of the communities that we toured while we were looking. It was just as clean as the others, and the staff was quite pleasant. We went unannounced one morning to see the level of activity during a different time of day, and it was quite different. People weren't really out and about yet at 9:30 in the morning. The food here was very good, but the parking was terrible.

After their evaluation of my father who has Alzheimer's disease and their assurances that they could handle him they in fact could not cope with him. He fell and had to go to the hospital within 24 hours of moving there. Within one week they called and said we would have to provide 24 hour full time aides at our expense in addition to paying them. We brought him back home instead. We discovered that they had been administering his medications improperly. It then took them two months and countless letters and phone calls from us to return my mothers money. What finally seems to have broken the money loose was a call from the state regulator. I do have to commend the in the trenches staff they seem engaged and caring, but management seems to be all about making as much money as possible. Update: I am happy to report that after seeing this review I was contacted by Andrea [removed] (VP Marketing and Communications at Maplewood) who understands the value of doing the right thing. She felt that due to the aggravation that my mother went through she should get all of her money back and then made it happen. My hat is off to her, at least one member of the senior management team walks the talk.

Maplewood has declined in the past few years in terms of service yet costs increased. This is unfortunate since they were on an improvement path as a turnaround story. Facilities are nice but the very thing that elders need with experienced and caring providers has diminished. A very qualified, and key employee, (activities director) who left was finally replaced after several months by a college student with no experience. The reason for taking so long was that they were "carefully screening applicants". Activities are half hearted. Residents are not encouraged to join, events are left unattended or don't even happen. Results suggest that they were looking for a low cost entry employee. Aid staff are nice but seem overworked and therefore not able to provide care as advertised. And are told not to talk to families. Staff in dining are very nice but food is sometimes overcooked and tastes like leftovers. Yet they advertise farm to market. The good news is that the facility has recently been cleaned and painted outside. I guess that's where the price increases were invested.

This place looked incredibly, it was like a nice country club. Everything was clean and well kept. However, during the tour we noticed that the staff were not very friendly with the residents, they seemed irritated with them. The residents just didn't seem happy in general, and we didn't feel like it would have been a good atmosphere for our loved ones.

My brother did not like this place and neither did I because that's more of a nursing home situation. The rooms are much much smaller and the place is across from the hospital. My brother didn't even want to go back and look at it a second time. It's just not what we were looking for.

In a word-overrated....for the big money My experience with a loved one was there was variability with care due to understaffing and quality of aides, and so much attention was paid on outward looking items-like beautiful flowers, etc, that basic care items were overlooked, such as not keeping up with toilet paper in the rooms, neglecting use of compression stockings, etc. The memory care unit was understaffed. Had problems with air conditioning that took way too long to fix for a unit with an elderly person in it. Fairly disappointing.

Everything is very nice and clean and well kept. The food is the pits. The toaster seems to only toast one side of the bread. It seems the chef has less experience than the kid at McDonalds, and the food Tastes it. Please hire an experienced person or get McDonalds in there.. I had a chef stop in to apply for the position during the last chef change and he was told to go on line and apply. In addition all the help is part time and most don't give a dam. I hope things can improve. Maybe uber can deliver from local restaurants. It would be worth the fee...!

When I read the "Good for assisted living, not so much for one who needs assistance" comment from October 2018, it was so similar to our experience that I had to ask myself if I had written the review but had forgotten that I had posted it already. Recently I've become very concerned by what seems to be a lack of sufficient responsiveness from management, and difficulty executing on the delivery of care. Perhaps what seems to be frequent turnover contributes to their problems. Many emails are address to the position, not the name (e.g. "job@...", not "marysmith@..." That suggests to me that their turnover has been high for a while. Nice looking place, activities, and food is decent, but I've been increasingly disappointed with the service lately. And that's really the key.

The one thing I would change is consistent staff. The turnover is staggering. Call offs and people quitting is daily. I have been through 3 Directors of Nursing and several chefs and I can't count the amount of nurse aides. This has brought the staff who try to work down in moral. Make us sad to see the staff in turmoil.

Maplewood looks great at first glance, and there are many positive things about it. However there are some serious operational problems that I should have known about had I read more reviews and not taken one friend's recommendation as gospel. I think it would be a good fit for a relatively self sufficient resident who is looking for independent living or assisted but with minimal assistance. it is not so good for my loved one who needs a fair amount of prodding and assistance. Often she is left in bed for well over 12 hours and noone gets her up in the morning for breakfast unless I intervene. Lots of management turnover. Aides don't seem particularly happy or engaged. Food is great, facilities clean and inviting. Management take note.

Wonderful place for assisted living, but everyone on staff needs more training before "Maplewood at Cuyahoga Falls" can be qualified as a Memory Care Facility for the treatment of residents dealing with Alzheimer's disease. Hoping the staff will learn how to provide full assistance where it is really needed the most. Good Luck :)

The facility is clean and well maintained - inside and out. And then there's everything else. Limited activities leave the residents bored and disengaged. As stated by another reviewer, residents without memory issues are not going to be stimulated and will soon be depressed. The sporadic arts & crafts sessions are well intentioned but would be better suited to kindergarteners. The offerings in the dining room are limited, served lukewarm at best, and let's just say that it's fortunate no one living there is in a rush to get anywhere because service is very slow. This is really a shame since mealtime is something which most assisted living residents look forward to. There's an add-on charge for everything so make sure you know what you'll need (laundry service, medication administration, mealtime assistance, hair & nail salon, etc.) and check the prices before you sign up. Many residents have personal aides that help them so if those families felt it to be necessary, that tells you something about the availability and/or cost of staff assistance. Finally, it becomes more and more difficult to make friends as we get older. I don't think most new residents really want to be in an assisted living facility so it's incumbent upon the staff to engage them early and create a sense of belonging. That needs to involve more than remembering their name and saying hello when they walk by. The elderly have their cliques too and without more activities to pull residents together, the place feels more like a mid-range hotel and less like home.

After 6 mths at maplewood in 2022 my Dad moved out to Sunrise in East Brunswick. maplewood services were poor. Staff shortages led to neglect. For example - 3 people overnight watching 21 people in memory care residents and an additional 10 people in AL on that floor. If you were leaving after 8pm, you would find people wandering - plenty of falls. I wouldn't put an animal in maplewood and I told their executive director that. Staff turnover at Maplewood was like a revolving door. Once we moved him, dad spent from the remainder of 2022 until his death this year extremely well cared for at [facility removed].

Limited staff and compassion for Assisted Living needs. While some seniors will thrive with limited support in this facility, those that need more help (toileting, dressing, bathing) will end up at in the memory care unit - as that is where they have staff. Overnight staff is very limited - only 3 people for all of the residents. If your senior needs help - you will be asked to provide private aides (on top of your level of care). My parents felt rushed and anxious with the care. With a Covid outbreak - they will ask you to get aides to care for your parent - and if that aide needs a chair outside the room, don’t ask. Told that appearance for tours is a priority. Response times to care also lacks - often when you are visiting - you are on your own if your parents need help.

The best thing we can say is it looks pretty. Unfortunately for our family it did not live up to the brochure and presentation. We don’t recommend . The memory care program consisted mainly of Ted talks and you tube videos. There wasn’t enough staff. At meal times some of the residents needed cueing and help to eat but no one helped them. The food wasn’t farm to table as advertised, we saw cafeteria food , hamburgers, hot dogs and turkey roll. Our family member was unhappy with the care so we moved out. This program is quite high end and at [fee removed] per month it should be better. We do not recommend.

I'm not happy with community. The housekeeping staff is horrible due to the beds not being made correctly, linens not being changed, have to ask for wastebasket be empty, and the bathrooms aren't cleaned like they should. The daily care such as feet being washed and weekly showers they have ignored the family's request. There is no follow up with the staff with outside providers of my loved one.

They do not follow through with what they say they are going to do in the way of care. The wait times were long for staff when you called. They kept losing his clothes and his sheets. He was there for 5 months and they lost 6 sets of sheets even though we had his name all over them. The promised to feed him when we were not there and they did not do it. The food was good. The room sizes are good. They could use more benches in the hallways for folk to sit down. They have a nice outdoor space. The activity center where all the chairs were was usually dirty. They were understaffed.

The two other reviews that mention that this place is good for those who don't need real assistance but not for those who do is completely spot on. It's a beautiful facility and they have decent activities. But they do not know how to take care of people who have medical or psychological needs. I agree that turnover there is part of the problem. They keep losing their leadership. Communication is TERRIBLE. I think it is totally profit driven and they should spend less money on looks and more on services. I would post details but my loved one is still there and I'm afraid they will retaliate against her. Will post more once she's out.
