Disappointed

My mother died there at the end of May last year. I was not too happy with them during the final weeks she had there. They did not manage her pain too well had to keep on top of them to keep her comfortable. I also did not like the food they fed her was very bland and tasteless. She was on a puréed diet. If she was not as sick as she was I would have moved her somewhere else. I think if she wasn't so sick and able to do any of her own care it might have been different. But most the time there she spent in her room alone until I could get there after work. Not sure if they even checked on her as they said they would

Glitzy, But Not Worth It

Inspir markets itself as very upscale. The trouble is that it is impersonable and not very friendly. The management does not show any effort to make residents feel at home. There is considerable staff turnover so many caregivers do not know their client's needs. The variety and scope of the activities offered is a strong point. The food quality and variety is another strength.

Daughter of Resident

It was a beautiful place and was told the level of care would meet my mothers needs. Although it's aesthetically beautiful, the level of care is not as strong as they present. One person on duty for many residents. Short staffed. Activities are not well planned and no encouragement to participate in the limited ones they have. No outdoor focus in beautiful weather. Dining room is warm and pretty but short staffed and no communication or coaching/prompting on menu items for those who need it. It's just "what do you want to eat"? If the person can't articulate or is confused they get very limited food. Long wait times. Administration is not on the ball either. Issues moving in. So overall not so impressed.

We love the actual facility, it has full kitchens, large apartments, a heated pool, and the public spaces are very upscale. We are extremely disappointed with the food, and food service. The quality is low, and unappetizing. The food servers are rude and untrained. The food is often cold. We are also luke warm on the house cleaning services. They don't do a good job in private apartments. Entertainment has been good but not frequent enough.

O.K. Facility with some issues like all facilities

My mother moved in about 3 months after they opened. Like all facilities, there were issues....clothing missing, hearing aids broken and/or not being used, hearing aids not being cleaned, but one thing I would say, the aids always treated my mom kind and loving. We were there nearly every day so we saw quite a bit. The part that upsets me is that, although they have a clause in the agreement that states you have to give them a 30 day notice before moving out, no one reminded me of that when my mom was nearing the end of her life. She had lived in 2 other facilities where upon death you only owed till the day you vacated the premise. At Maplewood, not even 10 days after my mom passed I got a bill stating we owed the balance of 30 days. We could have lowered the final bill if someone from the facility, who is well aware of the "rules", reminded me. They chose not to say anything so that we would owe the full month.

Look beyond the fancy finishes

My parents lived here for 5 years. Staff is nice but there is a lot of turnover. Location of building is good but there is no real access to outside except for small patio. Sometimes I would see residents walking down the side of the road just for a little outdoor exercise on nice days. There are no sidewalks or anyplace to walk that are longer than 50-100 feet. The response to this was to put a bench in a parking space with a potted plant next to it and call it a new garden. There are fitness classes but they were all in the morning. The pool has extremely limited swim times. There are no views of the Charles River from any of the public areas although some apartments do have views. Food was very good. Often there were excellent performances in the evening. My parents moved to another facility after they hired their 8th resident care director in a little over 3 years.

Concerned About Current Status

Just reading this last review and can't help but chime in that there are issues here in turnover. They are losing good people, especially on the second floor. They just lost the person who ran the dementia unit this week, and others have recently left as well. The DIrector there is a major issue to all I have spoken to. Make sure you look very carefully before proceeding. We are worried but not directly impacted yet.

The Maplewood Staff Cares But Dining Causes Frustration

Maplewood is a lovely place with a caring staff. The main problem is the dining room food and service. It is billed as "farm to table" and it is not. The food is not great. The service in the dining room, though friendly and kind, is unbearably slow. Sometimes waiting half an hour for food. Everyone at a table getting served at different times. Causes residents unneeded stress and irritation. Non-dining room management and staff should sit in the dining room to facilitate conversation (which elderly people find difficult) and to experience the frustration the residents have to go through three times a day. The activities are lacking in the sense that there are things to go to (movies in the living room, music performances, trips out to dinner), but there is nothing to do. No arts and crafts, workshops, certainly nothing that would be appealing to intelligent elderly people. The residents who do not need memory care have no artistic or creative outlets. There is no gym or exercise or therapy space.

Friendly staff, care services could be improved

I think they do a nice job at Maplewood at Orange in terms of the cleanliness of the facility, and the staff are generally very friendly. However I do think their actual care practices could stand to be improved. I feel like sometimes there is a lack of communication between the staff about my loved ones care needs, and I don't feel like they are entirely on top of her medications.

Good food, bad parking, not enough activity in the morning.

This was one of the communities that we toured while we were looking. It was just as clean as the others, and the staff was quite pleasant. We went unannounced one morning to see the level of activity during a different time of day, and it was quite different. People weren't really out and about yet at 9:30 in the morning. The food here was very good, but the parking was terrible.

Staff great, management not so much.

After their evaluation of my father who has Alzheimer's disease and their assurances that they could handle him they in fact could not cope with him. He fell and had to go to the hospital within 24 hours of moving there. Within one week they called and said we would have to provide 24 hour full time aides at our expense in addition to paying them. We brought him back home instead. We discovered that they had been administering his medications improperly. It then took them two months and countless letters and phone calls from us to return my mothers money. What finally seems to have broken the money loose was a call from the state regulator. I do have to commend the in the trenches staff they seem engaged and caring, but management seems to be all about making as much money as possible. Update: I am happy to report that after seeing this review I was contacted by Andrea [removed] (VP Marketing and Communications at Maplewood) who understands the value of doing the right thing. She felt that due to the aggravation that my mother went through she should get all of her money back and then made it happen. My hat is off to her, at least one member of the senior management team walks the talk.

Maplewood Newtown Decline

Maplewood has declined in the past few years in terms of service yet costs increased. This is unfortunate since they were on an improvement path as a turnaround story. Facilities are nice but the very thing that elders need with experienced and caring providers has diminished. A very qualified, and key employee, (activities director) who left was finally replaced after several months by a college student with no experience. The reason for taking so long was that they were "carefully screening applicants". Activities are half hearted. Residents are not encouraged to join, events are left unattended or don't even happen. Results suggest that they were looking for a low cost entry employee. Aid staff are nice but seem overworked and therefore not able to provide care as advertised. And are told not to talk to families. Staff in dining are very nice but food is sometimes overcooked and tastes like leftovers. Yet they advertise farm to market. The good news is that the facility has recently been cleaned and painted outside. I guess that's where the price increases were invested.

Very nice looking, but not impressed with the staff

This place looked incredibly, it was like a nice country club. Everything was clean and well kept. However, during the tour we noticed that the staff were not very friendly with the residents, they seemed irritated with them. The residents just didn't seem happy in general, and we didn't feel like it would have been a good atmosphere for our loved ones.

Over-rated for the Money

In a word-overrated....for the big money My experience with a loved one was there was variability with care due to understaffing and quality of aides, and so much attention was paid on outward looking items-like beautiful flowers, etc, that basic care items were overlooked, such as not keeping up with toilet paper in the rooms, neglecting use of compression stockings, etc. The memory care unit was understaffed. Had problems with air conditioning that took way too long to fix for a unit with an elderly person in it. Fairly disappointing.

what can they do?

Everything is very nice and clean and well kept. The food is the pits. The toaster seems to only toast one side of the bread. It seems the chef has less experience than the kid at McDonalds, and the food Tastes it. Please hire an experienced person or get McDonalds in there.. I had a chef stop in to apply for the position during the last chef change and he was told to go on line and apply. In addition all the help is part time and most don't give a dam. I hope things can improve. Maybe uber can deliver from local restaurants. It would be worth the fee...!

Increasingly disappointed

When I read the "Good for assisted living, not so much for one who needs assistance" comment from October 2018, it was so similar to our experience that I had to ask myself if I had written the review but had forgotten that I had posted it already. Recently I've become very concerned by what seems to be a lack of sufficient responsiveness from management, and difficulty executing on the delivery of care. Perhaps what seems to be frequent turnover contributes to their problems. Many emails are address to the position, not the name (e.g. "job@...", not "marysmith@..." That suggests to me that their turnover has been high for a while. Nice looking place, activities, and food is decent, but I've been increasingly disappointed with the service lately. And that's really the key.

Staffing an issue

The one thing I would change is consistent staff. The turnover is staggering. Call offs and people quitting is daily. I have been through 3 Directors of Nursing and several chefs and I can't count the amount of nurse aides. This has brought the staff who try to work down in moral. Make us sad to see the staff in turmoil.
