Well worth it before dementia is moderate to severe. High quality of life a facility focus.

Maplewood is probably the best choice for a loved one who still has some independence or is willing to move into assisted living and will later transition through the memory care units. The farm to table menu is amazing, the care staff is polite (though I would have preferred more feedback sometimes) and professional but also shows affection to residents, and the cleaning staff is efficient and contientous. Our loved one fought going into care for so long that she needed the highest level of care. She was given medication to calm her down when she became so agitated that she would fling herself on the floor. Eventually she needed a full time, twenty four hour caregiver that we needed to hire from another organization. Once we reached the point of hospice, the level of care was intensified by multiple agencies, and we really appreciated not having to move her out of her own bed and now familiar surroundings. Our only concern is that we were told that if an outside aide had been used during the initial transition, the dementia may not have progressed as quickly. This is because she would hide in her room , and not ask for help. She didn't listen to music, watch television, or get nearly as much stimulation as she could have since the staff focused on making sure she was clean, toileting, and eating (and they never force residents into the common area for activities.). If we had known that an aide may have helped (we have since been told) that she may never have become so violent and needed frequent sedation. On the other hand, the activities that are offered at all levels of care seem worthwhile, and those facilitating the outings and other activities are enthusiastic and caring. The other residents we saw when visiting were often friendly, and we had several chats with people who were thrilled to be living at Maplewood. They praised the pub, trips, salon, movie and trivia nights and selection in the library- all things that our loved one ws too far gone to ever utilize and appreciate. So, if your loved one is still fairly highly functioning and likes farm fresh food and socializing, this is the place for you. If not, the cost (which covers all of these other activities and benefits) might be too much for what your loved one will actually be getting. (With the additional nursing her last year cost about $150,00.00)

Brand new, super clean, ton...

Brand new, super clean, tons of natural light. Feels expansive, but is actually a fairly small community. Neighborhood is a little sketchy, but it's a renovated school so there's a park/playground adjacent to the property, which makes it feel very open. We toured primarily the memory care unit, and staff there seemed very bonded with residents - everyone from housekeeping to kitchen staff to resident greeted each other by first name, with a welcoming smile, affectionate touch or hug. Multiple activities - some group, some one-on-one, all with plenty of interaction on various levels - staff adjust the calendar for residents with a particular hobby or interest - and residents provide monthly input on everything, from food to activities to general issues. Seems like a place where residents feel heard, and respected, and the staff value allowing them to feel a sense of independence. They also have a 'brain gym' - setup of computers where residents can play games that are specifically engineered for those with cognitive impairment, send/receive basic emails, etc. Farm-to-table meals served restaurant style in an elegant dining area - there's also a private dining room that residents can enjoy with their families for visits. Overall, I found the facility tremendously clean and welcoming, with residents who were highly engaged at all levels. The only drawback for me is the location, as I would prefer something a bit closer - though it is convenient for my brother. Definitely a contender. My #3 choice so far.

Recently renovated, super c...

Recently renovated, super clean, bright, hardwood floors in apartments and common area and carpet in hallways. Relatively small community. Views are questionable (some rooms overlook a cemetery across the road, no expansive views that I could see, but it was also winter and all the trees were bare, so clearly not the best time for views anywhere). I toured primarily the memory care unit, and staff there seemed very bonded with residents - it was shift change, and there was lots of hugs and affection on both sides. Multiple activities - some group, some one-on-one, all with plenty of interaction on various levels - staff adjust the calendar for residents with a particular hobby or interest (e.g. they've recently added woodworking/carving at one resident's request) - and residents provide monthly input on everything, from food to activities to general issues. Seems like a place where residents feel heard, and respected, and the staff value allowing them to feel a sense of independence. They also have a 'brain gym' - setup of computers where residents can play games that are specifically engineered for those with cognitive impairment, send/receive basic emails, even Skype with those who aren't able to visit in person. Outdoor space is a fairly small secured patio with a rock waterfall in one corner - not the best I've seen, but could be nice in summertime. Farm-to-table meals (they even sent us home with a home-baked pie, made by their chef on the premises). The assisted living floor has a sunroom/greenhouse that was filled floor-to-ceiling with plants - all well cared for and extremely healthy - where residents can just sit and relax. Overall, I found the facility tremendously clean and welcoming, with residents who were highly engaged at all levels. The only drawback for me is the location, as it's a bit more urban than I think our Mom would like - though that's not a deal-breaker, in my view. My #2 choice so far.

This was an absolutely wonderful community

This was an absolutely wonderful community, and if it had been a little closer, I would have picked them. They had a warm wonderful interior that had a really great feel to it. The staff seemed really, really pleasant. They have farm to table food and beautiful plating with flavor to back it up. They are on the same street as Danbury hospital so there is a lot of traffic and there is a parking problem not enough to go around on weekends and holidays.

The chef is good, the people feel like eating.

My mother in law is in the Alzheimers wing and they do have activities on a daily basis and bring in musicians twice a week if they want to participate but no one is forced. It was a little smaller and more manageable than the others we looked at and felt like this is the place where she would be, and it was not to overwhelming. It was more homey, and the lobby is smaller, they have a library and a place to sit with the plants that's nice. The meals seem to be very nice, the presentation they make a point of using fresh ingredients, they call it plow to plate. The chef is good, the people feel like eating. It's a big part of the day and a good time for them to socialize.

Really beautiful but was not shown all of my options.

Was really beautiful but was not shown what all of my options would be. When I had picked up the admission paperwork the pricing was different, they told us that the prices whent up but it was a three thousand dollar difference, and the original quote was only three months prior. The staff was just wonderful, but it comes down to what the care costs because it's all coming out of pocket.

Mid-Level Memory Care Program Available

It's okay. My mother has Alzheimer's so nowhere is going to be perfect but she's getting good care. It's very clean and they're very friendly. The cost is very expensive, I have to say, but it's expensive everywhere. They're probably one of the more reasonable places. They do have a Tides program which is a mid level memory care program. My mom spends some time in that but mostly she's in the memory care.

Decor Is Impractical for Residents

The thing that strikes me is the decor and furnishings and even the silverware and glassware are really beautiful but it seems like they are for the benefit of the family members and not the benefit of the residents. They have wine glasses on the table and they should realize that the residents are physically impaired. The chairs are very heavy and the couches are very low. They are not designed for the residents, they are for the family feeling good about how nice it looks. It is gorgeous, but it may speak to their philosophy of just trying to impress the family members. My brother goes to the community fairly often, and he seems to be OK with the care that mom is receiving.

Great Staff, More Off-Site Activites Would Be Nice

My mom has been there about a week. Judging against other places I've seen, it's top notch. The activities is my least favorite thing right now. Looking at the calender it doesn't appear that there are a ton of things that are off-site, where they go places. The community is new so maybe that will come later. I think they could up the quantity of the activities. It's expensive but everything is so much money it's just hard to tell. The staff tries really hard. The food is really good. So far, I think they're doing an excellent job. The people there are really great and not just the care givers or the people you would expect it from. Everyone fromt he kitchen staff to the cleaning staff is great.

Lovely facility. Program director knew all the patients by name and they seems to respond to her. All the staff was very welcoming and seemed happy to share any information with us. One down side was the advanced state most of the patients were in. I didn't notice a lot of interaction between them although they were in the same room. Didn't see a lot of staff around but there was an outing today so that may be why. A lease is involved with a 30 day notice clause (15 in case of death). rent is still expected even if there is hospitalization. Staff ratio is 1:7 in day and 1:14 at night). Great concept for dining options (visual choices) and added benefits of depth perception color choices in decor. Nice menu choices.

Eldery Care with COVID

There was a big issue in the kitchen, and they had everyone eating in their room for two months, right after that the pandemic hit. The nice thing was that all the residents were already separated. The cook has been fired, but we haven't received a good answer as to what happened in the kitchen. For the most part everything seems to be good there. The only other thing that was alarming, is that they told the resident they had COVID, but they didn't show the residents who was the patient. They just started taking temperatures. The resident was concerned because they wouldn't tell them and it bothered the resident.
