Staff is friendly and willing to help. We have frequent family meetings with open lines of communication. Aids are attentive to dad's needs but I find that there is often not enough coverage, especially on the weekends. Because of this, Dad has a private aid 4-5 days a week. There has been a lot of turnover with the managing director of Maplewood Southport. I don't think there is a director now. 2nd floor memory care: Over the past 1.5 years, there has been several changes in the amount of activities and with the activities director. I think Maplewood finally has a handle on what is needed for the 2nd floor. The residents seem to be involved and happy. Hands on activities/games, exercise, off campus trips 2-3x week and live music on the weekends. There has been more integration between the floors. Often times residents from floor 1/3 will come play bingo, exercise and listen to music on the second floor.

This is a very good and welcoming facility. The support staff is great! The level of support is great! The atmosphere is great! The programs to involve family with the facility and residents are great! This has been a great move for my father! That being said, there have been some issues. The new website and financial information/integration seem to be ‘a work in progress’. You do need to advocate for your family member regarding issues that come up. We have had some startup issues. But, overall, we are happy with the facility and the support and care provided!

Everyone is very friendly. They always try to fix any small issues that come up, and the staff are very helpful. My Mother in Law is in the memory care unit, and they take wonderful care of her. Actually, they take wonderful care of everyone. The hospital being so close has already been helpful, as she had to be rushed to the hospital for an emergency and it was right next door! The activities look fun and seem to have a bunch of people who attend. But, you also don't have to attend if you don't want to. They offer a lot of choices. The only things we have been concerned with are some minor communication errors, with setting up the phone or tv. And when going through the initial process there was a lot of confusion, but maybe that was because of the situation.

Overall Maplewood at Darien has been a very good experience and our loved one is quite happy. They could have a little more staff communication when things arise so that everyone is better directed and knows what to do if problems arise. We would recommend this community to other families who may need a place for their loved ones.

Everyone there was helpful and kind, there’s just a few things I’d like to see improved. The refrigerator is small, slightly bigger than a dorm size refrigerator. The microwave is on a shelf above the refrigerator, which I feel is a little high for most people who are elderly people. My mom‘s windows don’t open all the way and they’re kind of difficult for her to open.

I would recommend Maplewood at Strawberry Hill. My only reason for rating some of the items on your checklist a 4 and not a 5 was due to some of the actions/attitudes of some of the aides and repeated errors on the monthly invoice.

They need to do a better job of accommodating family members in the dining room on holidays such as Thanksgiving. Spots for family members are too few and get taken too quickly. Visiting family members should be entitled to a few meals each year in the dining room with their loved one, without charge. At [fee removed] per month (in 2023), it is very insulting to be informed that a visiting (it happened to me) family member has to pay for a hot dog at lunch (not kidding). The building is outstanding/uplifting.

Overall experience - so it's been good but I'm in NY and he's in CT. Seeing the place was easy, getting him moved and his room set up before he got went smoothly. The downfall is that when he first went there [name removed]-the 'sales lady ' would call and update me at first to let me know how he was adjusting. The other staff do not. The place is pretty clean. Not really any complaints there. If there is something that needs attention you just housekeeping know, if they are there. The friendliness of the staff... that all depends. Some are super great like the nurse [name removed] on the 3rd floor. Most of the staff is pretty nice, but they don't seem to out of their way much to speak to family. Staff at the front desk are great. I can be on my way out the door and see me crying and ask if I want to take a minute and have water or something else to drink. Quality of care...no one will ever care for your loved one you do. [name removed] had a stoke last [date removed] . When I went to hospital his fingernails were long and very dirty. His stoke left his right side compromised and unable to speak so now moved to a different floor. [name removed] was very much loved before his stoke. He loved dancing on the floor and able to many things on his own. Now being in a wheel chair and at times 'sliding' out of it I do wonder where staff is to not realize his starting to sink and needs to be repositioned. I don't believe that staff is as involved with the care when their dementia gets to that point. I also have been able to get there as often as I would to to see if that is a true statement. I am not always informed when [name removed] needs more depends or something else. It's not a bad place but I do think they need more staff to be more involved. Like a bit more one on one. I personally do not like the food. [name removed] loves it and many others do. It would be nice if snacks were readily available instead of going the kitchen and asking especially for someone who is not able to talk. Someone actually has to think and ask 'hey would like a drink? Or something to eat?'. They do offer drinks at certain times like all facilities. They have 3 different floors depending on the severity of dementia. The first floor is for those who are most with it. They get lots of different activities. Painting, crafts and games. The 3rd floor where [name removed] used to had music, trivia and things like that. But never they other activities like the first floor. And I honestly don't believe anyone ever asked [name removed] if he would like to go. The 2nd floor where Jim is now the often seem to watch movies and have music. But there again I am not able to be there as often as life allows Value of cost.... that is kind of hard to judge. I don't know how other memory care facilities operate. To me for a little over [fee removed], yes [fee removed] a month! Those elderly deserve the very best and top notch care. It's very, very hard.

This is the third assisted-living facility that my father has been in. As far as management things are good, however, the aides seem to need more training. They're shorthanded and unable to assist at times. All of the main management staff are very attentive and helpful, but unfortunately, my father has most of his interactions at a different level. Communication is pretty nonexistent day to day unless I have to reach out to them for an issue. They seem to make a lot of promises, but they're not always fulfilled. These are issues that we have encountered at all three places my father has resided. If I put it in that perspective, they probably rate highest of the three . My father is always clean, well taken care of clothes laundered and his room is always attended to. The food is OK but selections are somewhat limited. I do think that they definitely try very hard to meet expectations, but suffer from the same issues that the industry in general is dealing with.

They understand dementia and the memory impaired. If there are any issues, they are easy to work with and want to make any needed improvements. Everyone was very nice and helpful, bent over backwards from the start. They did whatever they could to get my Dad engaged and out of his bed, which is where he has spent the majority of the last 10 years, literally. When I visit him, he is never in his room or in his bed! They know how to deal with dementia, which my Dad had severely now, unfortunately. He is now technically in hospice care, after falling and the hospital did a CT scan and found a mass in his throat/neck area, in his lymph nodes. I was going to move him, but Maplewood assured me that they can continue to care for him, and the staff there is working well with Hospice. I am certain that I made the right decision. They communicate very well with the families. They call me whenever there is anything I should be aware of. My Dad has been in 2 other facilities prior to Maplewood, and that was not the case.

Cleanliness...I would give them a 5...very clean...smells good. I would give them a 5...the aides...the nurses...even the house keeping always say hello. When it comes to the activities, my Dad doesn't do any. Price just went up [fee removed] a month. I do think the food could be a little better or more care can come when a different entree is ordered. Overall we are happy w the care my Dad receives. There are many nice aides and nurses. I think as long as you visit your loved one and are involved in their care you will be happy w Maplewood.

When searching for an assisted living community for my Mother, we visited six senior facilities. We wanted my Mother to have a voice in where she would live and she selected Maplewood Senior Living of Cuyahoga Falls. The most impressive attribute of Maplewood is their H.E.A.R.T. Philosophy — Humor, Empathy, Autonomy,Respect and Trust. This active, engaging community employs staff who embrace this philosophy with kindness, patience and understanding and who are firmly committed to attending to the needs of all of the residents in their charge. Monthly rent is inclusive of room, board and daily amenities ( Cable, internet, etc) This makes it easier to budget expenses by taking the mystery of what the bill will be at the end of the month. The staff is well trained, consistent, professional and polite. My Mother has been happy at Maplewood, making new friends, trying new activities, and most of all feeling safe.

My husband and I are currently residents at Maplewood at Princeton and everything has been very good for us at this facility so far. The cleanliness, friendliness and staff are great. The care services, meals, activities and value for cost are good. Sometimes they are short staffed, but I think that is probably industry wide. Overall, we are very satisfied. I would recommend Maplewood at Princeton to others.
