Need Brain Healthy Meals and Snacks

For $60,000/year, It would be nice to serve the residents brain healthy meals. For it to be a relatively new facility, I would think they would be knowledgeable or at least do the research to ensure the foods served to the residents contribute to brain health. If we decide to select Ivy Springs Manor, it looks like I will have to take my mother-in-law most of her meals and snacks. That's a lot of work when you are paying that kind of money out of pocket. It's a bummer because I was impressed with everything else with the facility and program.

first two week review

well my mother has only been there for 2 weeks but what I have seen was far I'm not very happy with. it seems there's a communication problem between the Executive Director and other members of the staff. also on the week ends it seems like there's too little supervision going on come take times takes three or four rings to get the door answered and it seems people are just sitting in the lobby totally unattended. I really think they need to have a manager on duty program or something similar where there's always management on board on the weekend. my mother's room has not been clean on several occasions I've had to go get somebody to empty her trash bring her towels etc also there has been some problems with a couple of the patience my mother has a fear of two of them and I certainly see why ! I've been told that there may be some changes there so hopefully things will get better

Didn't leave a good impression

I didn't like it at all. We just walked in and the first impression wasn't a real good one. It smelled and it was too much money for what my mother in law got compared to the other ones we were looking at. The studio/one bedroom was about $2,000 and the extra services we were going to need were going to bring that price up.

Review for Sunabella Senior Living

I'll be honest, I'm not impressed. I don't think it's a good place. There are new staff every three weeks it seems. Right when my mom gets to know a staff that is helpful, they tend to leave or get fired. The person that originally showed us around got demoted and then left or not fired. There are no activities, from what I understand the staff that makes the food are rude. The staff I met over a year ago were great, but none of them are there anymore.

Overall experience is a 2, thru no faults of the facility. Not impressed with the housekeeping in the residence rooms. Common areas were good. #3 Rate a 4. There were two members of the care staff l would rate a 5. They were extremely attentive to my dad. I don't think the assessment done on my dad prior to his admission was accurate and that he needed more skilled help than they were prepared for which led to many issues, especially frequent falls. #5 l would rate a 4. #6 rate a 3, but my dad was a very picky eater and he liked the temperature of his food extremely hot. #7. Rate a 4. Dad was not much into arts and crafts, not much of a social person either which made it difficult for him to be around strangers. #8 rate a 4 it was a fair price

Is this as good as it gets in the US?

It's too easy to call a home with people in various states of debilitating disability "depressing," but that word comes to mind. This place has a veneer of cheeriness, which the residents themselves uphold with smiles and waves. The staff act very nice too. Weekends, the place seems adrift, with leadership missing and activities simply not begun or changed before they've even begun. The food is horrendous, unless the goal is to shorten lifespans: school-lunch type food that flies in the face of all studies on what constitutes healthy eating: white bread, processed meat, lots of sugary desserts and nary a fresh vegetable or fruit. Is this really the best we can do as a nation? Am aware of the more expensive homes having many more resources and better food and attention to the elderly and infirm. We have become blasé as a nation about how we treat the aged, and I hope some compelling leader steps up about these inequities, and that I myself never suffer the same fate as these elders.

Would not recommend. Not a great experience

We only stayed there for three months because the care was not very good, a large medicine error was basically shrugged at, and management was very dismissive of any concerns. I believe all issues stemmed from the management that started right after we moved. Many long term caregivers were let go, new ones weren't properly trained and they were often short staffed because new people didn't enjoy working for the new management and quit regularly. No consistency in care. I kept trying to make things better and it just got worse. I was there every day and if my mom's care was poor, it makes me wonder about the care of others that were less fortunate. Thanks for all of your help. It wasn't something that we could have predicted because the management changed right after she moved in and layoffs started soon after.

Would not recommend

When I moved in, I was told I would have housekeeping, maintenance all utilities and three meals a day.a couple weeks after I moved in I was told there was no housekeeping. Shortly after that, the management announced that they were cutting back to two meals a day, and one of the meals would not be served in the lunchroom, but rather in the clubhouse and would be brought over. Well, that didn't go over very well and after a couple of weeks, they rescinded that announcement. and I started looking for another place to live. The final straw came when they also announced that they would be no maintenance and that we would have to do anything that needed repairing on our own and the rental price would be going up. They fired the landscaping crew and the grass was not cut for two months. I ended up cutting the grass in front of my own apartment myself in the heat in July and August. The food was horrible. The dining room was filthy. Every time you touched the surface your hand would stick to it your shoes stuck to the floor as you walked through. All the food was fried greasy certainly not for people who had health conditions. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Millcreek Manor to my worst enemy. I loved the location and I loved my apartment, but the administration was wicked.

Our Experience

My loved one was previously a resident at Windrush Assisted Living and overall the experience at this facility was not great. The cleanliness, friendliness and staff were good. The meals were okay. However, the care services were not great. The facility was acceptable, but not really a good fit for Dementia or Memory Care patients like my loved one. Some of the staff were not too good with handling my loved one's Dementia.

Has room for improvement

Some improvements - a cleaner place in the cafeteria and the staff and more apartments to help out. Also no what is available when someone needs to leave and always having to wait 20-30 minutes for you to walk out the door and visit

Check everything before you commit

The communication is not good at all. To be fair, they were transitioning a lot of positions at the time we moved in. However, it was not communicated to us that they did NOT have a Physical Therapist contracted to work, so my loved one lost ALL of her month long progress from her rehab facility after her stroke. Some of the nurses were real and amazing, but too many didn't know how to treat an elderly person with respect and dignity and about treating them like an actual human being. The move in process was easy, they have a hotel dolly to help. Our loved one actually needed Memory Care, but when we moved in they insisted that she was AL. Low and behold, she needed Memory Care and they put her in theirs. Well, Ivy Springs Memory Care was for extreme cases and they went through sun downing drastically. My loved one was traumatized by the couple of days she was in there. Overall, this facility did not work out for us and we had to move her to a place more suitable for her. If I had to list the reasons for leaving, they would be: 1. Low functioning and traumatic Memory Care 2. Lack of communication/misleading communication 3. Less than friendly nursing staff (not all, but a couple of the ones she interacted with) 4. Lack of a physical therapy program 5. Deterioration of my loved one's physical status.

My parents [name removed] and [name removed]

Food is not good portions are very small and it tastes like cafeteria food with a very odd taste and there's no meal service at dinner my parents have to lug their dinner up to their room at lunch time it's ridiculous no one told us this upon check-in and move in. I'll give it a c- overall.

Would not recommend

There is no RN on site. Staff is not educated properly for Dementia/ Alzheimers residents. They quickly find fault in your family member for simple things but never corrects staff. Based off of our experience, I would not recommend Grace Manor at Lake Morton.

Executive director and head nurse are poor communicators, seem to spend more time making excuses. They struggle with making sure medication orders are correct. It takes my family making contact multiple times to get correct medications regiment in place. Not impressed.
