Why We Chose Legacy House of Mesa for My Mom

I chose Legacy House of Mesa for my mom because of the people. From the very first time I walked in, everyone was warm, welcoming, and genuinely kind. Even though the community itself isn’t the newest or most modern compared to others I toured, the people made all the difference and that’s ultimately why I trusted them with my mom’s care. Pros: The staff is truly the heart of this community. The caregivers, MedTechs, and front desk team are attentive, compassionate, and incredibly patient. They took wonderful care of my mom during her time there, and I always felt that she was treated with kindness and respect. The transportation driver who takes residents to appointments is also fantastic, professional, friendly, and so helpful. My mom’s studio apartment was clean, comfortable, and spacious enough to meet all her needs. While the building is a bit outdated, the warmth and dedication of the people made up for it. Areas for Improvement: There were some challenges that I think are important to mention. The biggest concern is staffing. It often felt like there simply weren’t enough caregivers available, which led to long wait times when my mom needed assistance after pressing her call button. We learned to be patient, but the delays would have worried me if there had ever been an emergency. The dining experience also declined after the first month and a half. Initially, things were great, but then the quality of the food dropped noticeably, and there didn’t seem to be enough servers to handle the dining room. Meals were sometimes burnt, undercooked, or poorly prepared, which was disappointing. Overall: Legacy House of Mesa has wonderful, caring people who truly show up for their residents. That is the community’s strongest asset. The staff members are exceptional, and they made my mom feel safe and cared for during her three months there. However, improvements in staffing levels, dining quality, and consistent communication, especially during transitions, would make a meaningful difference. Despite the challenges, I am grateful for the team members who cared for my mom with such kindness. They are the reason I chose Legacy House of Mesa, and they are the reason this community still deserves recognition for the heart and dedication of its people.

Constantly under staffed

They lie to get you in, they are constantly under staffed in all areas. Good workers are leaving all the time. Nothing gets fixed in a timely manor. Residents are often left alone. If the resident is completely capable then it is a nice place, but if they have any disabilities then it is not so nice.

Overall would recommend

I liked the facility but I felt they were understaffed. My mom had an incident with a fellow resident that resulted in her being pushed down which broke her hip. She died in her room 20 days later. The workers were nice and I conversed with them each time I was visiting mom and they were very friendly. But not once did I receive a call from anyone at the facility while mom was in the hospital. For [fee removed] a month I would think that someone would possibly check in with us on her recovery.

Disappointed and annoyed.

Others looking need to know that it is a good place for, say, 70-year olds who can manage on their own with minimal help. Like people who don't want to cook their own meals or clean their own houses anymore. But it is not at all for older, more dependent people who need help showering, dressing, etc. We went with home hospice care provided in the facility rather than rely on in-house "wellness" staff. The new director is very nice and addresses our concerns, but he's only one person dealing with "inherited staff" and not enough of them. The "wellness director" is incompetent, does not keep careful records (could not tell us if mom got any annual immunizations), and is often not there. The caretakers are very nice but underpaid.

Not exactly what I expected

Mom adjusted very well to living in MC. But the people working with the residents are so young I wonder if they appreciate the gravity of their work. Mom is currently sitting in a hospital bed with a broken hip because she was pushed by a resident. I don’t know if there were any staff present that could have done anything to prevent this. There are times that I’ve seen a resident not eat their meal and they just sit there for a while and then the meal is taken away. I guess I thought it would be better than an at home situation because she’s got 24/7 coverage but I don’t feel that it’s 24/7 care

An OK place but I can't recommend it

2023 Rent increase 8%. In 2022 I understand there was a similar increase. Corporate ownership = primary goal is not the residents. Residents concerns continuously ignored by local administrators and owners. Example: main elevator out of service for 1 month so far. When asked status of repair, admins reply was vendor was asked for a quote. Vendor hasn't responded. Admin hasn't followed up or asked other vendors to submit a bid.

Our Experience

My loved one is a resident at Legacy House of Taylorsville. The staff is very friendly and always willing to talk to us. Our loved one is 65 and the average age of a resident is 74. We would like it if he had more in common with the other residents. Although they clean the apartment every week, it seems to always be a little dirty. We feel that the staff genuinely cares about him as a person and want what's best. The location is in a beautiful neighborhood. The medical staff are very knowledgeable and on point.

A View From the 9th Floor

I probably made a mistake by going here. There is so much staff turnover. And the food is terrible, just one casserole after another. They can't even cook eggs right. I do like my apartment a lot. It's the right size. It's convenient. The shower is really great. But the food is just so awful. And there's not much camaraderie here. Everybody is in walkers/wheelchairs, and I'm still in pretty good shape, so I feel like a fish out of water. It's just not what I expected independent living would be like.

Mixed Feelings - Hard to Judge with Covid

I don't feel like my mom has been getting the care she needs. Right now they are understaffed, although the staff they do have are great and do their best. It's just hard with Covid and staffing issues, which I know are happening everywhere. But basically my mom was getting better care where she was previously in independent living with some extra assistance coming in. Here, they don't have as many rides to doctor appointments (transportation is limited to two days a week, and it's always booked). They don't have as many nurses to take care of bandaging. They don't have the PT staff she needs for her recovery. She has to bring in her own PT and massage, as well as Uber for appointments. And then she's paying for those things on top of what she pays for assisted living at Legacy Village. She doesn't like the food as well. She wishes she had never moved.

For the price, you don't really get the experience

Our loved one did not like the food there, they said it was repetitive and it got old fast. The value was pretty expensive, and every time we had to visit which was probably due to covid, we had to sign a paper and get our temperatures taken. We felt it was easier getting into a hospital, and the front desk workers were not always very friendly.

I would tell others not to use the memory care area. I wouldn't recommend this community for challenging memory care residents. The staff needs more experience with dementia and more staff to help in memory care. The community had great food.

Good for Assisted Living, Not for Memory Care

I would suggest you keep looking. Don't get fooled by the beautiful community, or the kindness of the marketing/selling coordinator. The information that was conveyed to us was somewhat different what we experienced. The communication was poor in regards to the staff and families. The staff wouldn't communicate the major complications with my loved one to me. There were issues with invoices and had to ask for invoices as well. I have left a message about a refund, and haven't heard back from the person. I was only getting feedback from the primary caretaker from the previous experience outside of this community.

Memory Care
December 2, 2018

I liked it here, but staff was a little Inpersonable and couldn’t answer a lot of my questions. I did a “pop up” visit and they weren’t prepared. It appears as though a lot of services aren’t included and they want to nickel and dime you to death.
