I toured Brookdale for my loved one. I did not like this community at all. to me, it felt like a nursing home that had been changed to an assisted living facility. It felt old, dark, and overall not like a good fit for us.

Ruff Start, Hoping Things Improve

My parents are doing okay here at this facility. This at first started out kind of ruff. The move in process was not very good. Their apartment wasn't ready for move-in, so we had to wait. It is a very nice looking community, they do a good job with the cleanliness. They seem to promise a lot of things they do not follow through with. My parents are pleased with the food. We haven't been really informed of the activities yet. This is a better place for them, than them living alone at home.

Staff is very friendly and so are most of the people. However, the food and service is horrible!!! Have waited up to one hour for server to take order then it comes just warm and dried out. The veggies are over cooked - just mush. The dirty dishes from previous dinners are left on the table - no bus boys or anyone to help clear. They are getting more people every week but the service is not being provided to meet the needs. The dining room manager is no where to be seen in the evening. Servers disappear into the kitchen for 20 to 30 minutes, come out with maybe one or two dinner plates. This is something that needs attention soon. I also have forgot to push the "morning" button but never hear from anyone. This has been for several months.

not enough dining room servers. I've waited 30- 45min to get waited on; particularly @ breakfast and dinner. Creative overlapping shifts would help. I rarely push my "alarm" in the morning and no one calls me or comes up to see me. i.e. the nursing dept is not doing a good job. Need more handicap parking spaces.

Genuine concern for residents is lacking.

My mom has lived there for 7 years. Great caring managers and delicious food in the beginning, but in the last couple of years, management, meals, and genuine caring have gotten worse as prices have risen. It looks like they are cutting corners in the kitchen. Mom complains that the meals are not appealing in terms of flavor and presentation. Edges of the dining tables are sticky every time I visit. Housekeepers on cell phone while cursory vacuuming and bathroom cleaning. Recent outbreak of Norovirus with 40 residents going to hospital says it all. The kitchen has a problem! Residents have no recourse for their complaints. I heard a manager tell a resident who was complaining about the food, "you don't have to live here".

Very disappointed.

My vibrant Mother moved into Camellia in December 2013. The facility is lovely and the activities are many. However, the food and food service are terrible. At 89 she cannot sit for 2-3 hours for food to be delivered to the table. The vegetables are cooked beyond recognition and everything is heavily covered with sauces. The dining room management requires serious attention. With many residents moving in weekly, they have failed to staff adequately or train properly. The work on the memory unit and long promised swimming pool have dragged on for months. The answer when questioning the drop off of services to residents is "we are busy with the 'important' issues." They have been battling legionaires bacteria in the water system for almost two months. It still exists. This was caused, I believe, by trying to scrimp on hot water and allowing the bacteria to grow in the plumbing system. A number of residents, including my Mother, have been hospitalized with pneumonia. We would not make this selection again.

Plus: Pleasant looking facility. The rooms are spacey enough. We saw both a 1 BR and a studio deluxe. Nice terraces, the larger apt had a bigger terrace than the studio. The place is 1/8 mile from a Publix and Walgreen. Utilities and cable are included in the rent. Washing machines/dryers are available in the halls in the evenings and all day Sat and Sun. During weekdays you can tip the servers/cleaning/maintenance person and have her do your laundry for you. Property is surrounded by trees and grass making for a bucolic atmosphere. Nice for taking walks. There is a small pool, but few residents use it. There are no pool activities such as water aerobics or lunch around the pool. It would be nice if they had that. There are no assisted living services, but you people with physical or memory problems may hire their own aids. Resident told me an outside physical therapist comes by a few times a week, covered by Medicare. There is also an LPN in house, with services for a fee or covered by Medicare. Lots of residents have dogs or cats, which are welcome. Negative: Only 1 elevator!! I think that one thing alone is a deal breaker. If a fire breaks out, how will they get all those seniors out, especially those with walkers and wheelchairs? I asked a resident about fire drills or practice evacuations or even some published protocols for emergencies. They told they were none of those things. The food was only so-so. We tried lunch, which is the main meal of the day. The severs were not that friendly and sort of treated the folks at my table like they were children. Meals are served at precise times, just like elementary school, if you are late, you are naughty and get reprimanded. You also miss the first course (rolls/butter, fruit cup, tiny salad). Activities were limited. Lunch is the main social activity, along with bingo and word games. At the time of our visit, due to staff reductions, some activities had been curtailed for the time. They do have at least 2 off-the-promises activities each month, such as lunch at a restaurant, shopping trip, local sites. I heard they had a casino trip. 1 or 2 afternoons a week they have a local singer or college kid come in and sing during the afternoon nap time in the lobby, under the atrium. Dining room set-up is poor. They only have 4-person tables. The shape of the tables makes it impractical to push 2 tables together. If you have a guest or more than 4 people want to sit together, it can't be done. By the way, you can bring a guest to eat for $10. They have a bus/van to take residents to local doctors, shopping, etc. but I was told that when the bus broke down, there was no alternative so doctor, shopping and of-site activities were canceled for a while. No central a/c so whichever room has the a/c unit is cool, the other room is hot. They told me they could put a ceiling fan in the warmer room. Hallways also have separate units, not central. I'm told that management staff turnaround is high. Prices are only slightly above other senior residences but, all things considered, it looks like less value than other similarly priced residences.

Review for The Summit of Germantown

We are very unhappy with the Summit of Germantown!! I would normally recommend to anyone. They pull a bait and switch after moving you in. Only 6 months after relocating my mom from Nashville into this facility, she has received an increase of [removed price] a month which bringing her her to [removed price] for (INDEPENDENT CARE). We expected an increase, but not that much. We tried to negotiate the in increase amount, but they refused. They said everyone is getting 9%-10% increase and no negotiations, but I find that very hard to believe. In addition to the high increase, the food is horrible. With this type of rent they should not be receiving canned food AND only brunch on Sundays. You probably should warn people that you a referring to this property that they do not care about resident retention, so plan to pay a lot more after a few moths.

My Wife's care is exceptional. The staff is attentive to her needs and desires. She is now in hospice and it was the Arbors staff that helped with that decision. Additionally, the meals are exceptional and tailored to her needs and wants. Additionally, the Arbors now has an Activity Director dedicated to Memory Care!! Great place.

Sorry, but we have not had a great experience so far. The food is a negative 5. It is very poor. Not nutritious, and not enough. My Mom has been there and they have had 3 "wellness directors". They have a difficult time with enough staffing also. This is concerning.

Awful. Employees afraid

The place has just made major changes and got rid of people that have been there since day one The residents all loved the people that were let go some of them were there even before the place opened It shows that loyalty there isn't recognized. The residents are upset to hear the favorite people receptionist, her daughter, kitchen workers and nurse aides have been forced out. Most all great people. Especially [name removed] the receptionist her daughter that would help n any department and [name removed] in dining in a l and a few wonderful aides. ([name removed] ) I Hope if you are reading this you know that the residents truly miss those that I've mentioned above You will be truly missed

Very difficult communication

My 90 YO mother has lived here for a few years and she loves it. However, in early January, she tripped over a mat that was rolled up and left in the common area of her building. She broke her hip, required surgery, a lengthy rehab stay, continued physical therapy, and the loss of her ability to walk unaided. Celebration Village and Grace Management have refused to accept any responsibility or liability for the dangerous and unsafe condition on their property. They left the mat lay there for three weeks before being picked up even knowing what had happened. They will not respond to emails I have sent over the last two months inquiring about the arbitration process that is required in the leasing agreement. Safety and security must be the number one consideration when helping our elders. I witnessed too much of "it's not my job" while visiting her.

Hopefully will improve

I have moved my parents to another facility. The care is much better and the caregivers in general are more compassionate and clearly trained better. At Rivertown Ridge the Health Care Director was let go ([name removed]). This is a blessing as the med carts were disorganized and care inconsistent. My mom did not receive her diabetic meds for 8 days. Just one unfortunate example. [name removed] and [name removed] have taken over [name removed] duties and will do a much better job, but we could not wait for things to get better. Family need to visit often and double check meds wherever you go.

I hoped for more

I am saddened to write this review. My Mom and Dad have been associated with The Highlands for 40+ years. While marketed as "home" it is far from it. While in IA, Mom fell and broke her hip requiring surgery and extended off site recovery. Once cleared to return, The Highlands leadership deemed Mom too far gone mentally and physically for IA and put her in Governor King (memory care) where they touted extra loving care, lots of memory stimulating exercises and chances to interact with lots of fellow members. By sticking her in GK, they separated my parents from each other (not allowing co-habitation) -- the first time in 68 years! Their extra care amounted to clinical and regimented marches to/from meals, sitting at tables where no one talks, watching TV as mental stimulation and bedtime at 7pm. The Head of GK (with no medical background) holds a TON of power over how people live out their lives. Not to mention it is outrageously expensive! They are now thriving in new IA!

Very expensive with lots of extra charges

First, my deposit was lost by Brookdale and I was humiliated by receiving a collection call for their error. Issues are Maintenance. I have had to hire professionals at my own expense to get things fixed. The dishwasher is broken - two weeks now. Kitchen Faucet leaks and handle is hard to pull out. I had to put drain cleaner down drain when it kept stopping up - my expense. New faucet is also my expense. Freezer needs repair. Never taken care of. Bathtub water came out black, but didn’t matter as it had no plug to take a bath. One window has terrible condensation. Switches don’t work, I don’t even know what most of them do and little concern was shown to help me.

Looking For a Place For Your Loved One...Continue Looking

It was a A horrible experience in my mom is no longer there. A number of times my mom fell and laid on the floor for extended periods of time before they discovered that she was there. The final fall and lay in there, She ended up in the hospital, and ultimately in rehab. She had an infection in her toe and was seen a podiatrist, They were completely aware of that and were supposed to check her toe daily. When she ended up in the rehab, they discovered that it had gotten infected. Do to not keeping an eye on it. And she had osteomyelitis. She had to then be on a pic. Line with iv antibiotics in excess of twenty days.
