Highly dissatisfied

The quality of the food has gone down, our loved one never had blood pressure or heart problems, but now due to the amount of processed foods she is now being treated for high blood pressure. We have been hung up on a few times when we call asking about our loved one and her quality of care. They have cut back on the entertainment and activities due to COVID which they are still being charged for. They do have life alert buttons, but there is no medical staff and after 7pm they just to have to call 911.

We toured this community and the staff was nice. We think that the community should be updated. The menu looks like it needed improvement. They offer activities. We did not feel that this community could give up what we needed. We do recommend that other families tour this community for the care of a loved one.

Ruff Start, Hoping Things Improve

My parents are doing okay here at this facility. This at first started out kind of ruff. The move in process was not very good. Their apartment wasn't ready for move-in, so we had to wait. It is a very nice looking community, they do a good job with the cleanliness. They seem to promise a lot of things they do not follow through with. My parents are pleased with the food. We haven't been really informed of the activities yet. This is a better place for them, than them living alone at home.

Staff is very friendly and so are most of the people. However, the food and service is horrible!!! Have waited up to one hour for server to take order then it comes just warm and dried out. The veggies are over cooked - just mush. The dirty dishes from previous dinners are left on the table - no bus boys or anyone to help clear. They are getting more people every week but the service is not being provided to meet the needs. The dining room manager is no where to be seen in the evening. Servers disappear into the kitchen for 20 to 30 minutes, come out with maybe one or two dinner plates. This is something that needs attention soon. I also have forgot to push the "morning" button but never hear from anyone. This has been for several months.

not enough dining room servers. I've waited 30- 45min to get waited on; particularly @ breakfast and dinner. Creative overlapping shifts would help. I rarely push my "alarm" in the morning and no one calls me or comes up to see me. i.e. the nursing dept is not doing a good job. Need more handicap parking spaces.

Genuine concern for residents is lacking.

My mom has lived there for 7 years. Great caring managers and delicious food in the beginning, but in the last couple of years, management, meals, and genuine caring have gotten worse as prices have risen. It looks like they are cutting corners in the kitchen. Mom complains that the meals are not appealing in terms of flavor and presentation. Edges of the dining tables are sticky every time I visit. Housekeepers on cell phone while cursory vacuuming and bathroom cleaning. Recent outbreak of Norovirus with 40 residents going to hospital says it all. The kitchen has a problem! Residents have no recourse for their complaints. I heard a manager tell a resident who was complaining about the food, "you don't have to live here".

Very disappointed.

My vibrant Mother moved into Camellia in December 2013. The facility is lovely and the activities are many. However, the food and food service are terrible. At 89 she cannot sit for 2-3 hours for food to be delivered to the table. The vegetables are cooked beyond recognition and everything is heavily covered with sauces. The dining room management requires serious attention. With many residents moving in weekly, they have failed to staff adequately or train properly. The work on the memory unit and long promised swimming pool have dragged on for months. The answer when questioning the drop off of services to residents is "we are busy with the 'important' issues." They have been battling legionaires bacteria in the water system for almost two months. It still exists. This was caused, I believe, by trying to scrimp on hot water and allowing the bacteria to grow in the plumbing system. A number of residents, including my Mother, have been hospitalized with pneumonia. We would not make this selection again.

Only 1 elevator!

Plus: Pleasant looking facility. The rooms are spacey enough. We saw both a 1 BR and a studio deluxe. Nice terraces, the larger apt had a bigger terrace than the studio. The place is 1/8 mile from a Publix and Walgreen. Utilities and cable are included in the rent. Washing machines/dryers are available in the halls in the evenings and all day Sat and Sun. During weekdays you can tip the servers/cleaning/maintenance person and have her do your laundry for you. Property is surrounded by trees and grass making for a bucolic atmosphere. Nice for taking walks. There is a small pool, but few residents use it. There are no pool activities such as water aerobics or lunch around the pool. It would be nice if they had that. There are no assisted living services, but you people with physical or memory problems may hire their own aids. Resident told me an outside physical therapist comes by a few times a week, covered by Medicare. There is also an LPN in house, with services for a fee or covered by Medicare. Lots of residents have dogs or cats, which are welcome. Negative: Only 1 elevator!! I think that one thing alone is a deal breaker. If a fire breaks out, how will they get all those seniors out, especially those with walkers and wheelchairs? I asked a resident about fire drills or practice evacuations or even some published protocols for emergencies. They told they were none of those things. The food was only so-so. We tried lunch, which is the main meal of the day. The severs were not that friendly and sort of treated the folks at my table like they were children. Meals are served at precise times, just like elementary school, if you are late, you are naughty and get reprimanded. You also miss the first course (rolls/butter, fruit cup, tiny salad). Activities were limited. Lunch is the main social activity, along with bingo and word games. At the time of our visit, due to staff reductions, some activities had been curtailed for the time. They do have at least 2 off-the-promises activities each month, such as lunch at a restaurant, shopping trip, local sites. I heard they had a casino trip. 1 or 2 afternoons a week they have a local singer or college kid come in and sing during the afternoon nap time in the lobby, under the atrium. Dining room set-up is poor. They only have 4-person tables. The shape of the tables makes it impractical to push 2 tables together. If you have a guest or more than 4 people want to sit together, it can't be done. By the way, you can bring a guest to eat for $10. They have a bus/van to take residents to local doctors, shopping, etc. but I was told that when the bus broke down, there was no alternative so doctor, shopping and of-site activities were canceled for a while. No central a/c so whichever room has the a/c unit is cool, the other room is hot. They told me they could put a ceiling fan in the warmer room. Hallways also have separate units, not central. I'm told that management staff turnaround is high. Prices are only slightly above other senior residences but, all things considered, it looks like less value than other similarly priced residences.

Very difficult communication

My 90 YO mother has lived here for a few years and she loves it. However, in early January, she tripped over a mat that was rolled up and left in the common area of her building. She broke her hip, required surgery, a lengthy rehab stay, continued physical therapy, and the loss of her ability to walk unaided. Celebration Village and Grace Management have refused to accept any responsibility or liability for the dangerous and unsafe condition on their property. They left the mat lay there for three weeks before being picked up even knowing what had happened. They will not respond to emails I have sent over the last two months inquiring about the arbitration process that is required in the leasing agreement. Safety and security must be the number one consideration when helping our elders. I witnessed too much of "it's not my job" while visiting her.

I hoped for more

I am saddened to write this review. My Mom and Dad have been associated with The Highlands for 40+ years. While marketed as "home" it is far from it. While in IA, Mom fell and broke her hip requiring surgery and extended off site recovery. Once cleared to return, The Highlands leadership deemed Mom too far gone mentally and physically for IA and put her in Governor King (memory care) where they touted extra loving care, lots of memory stimulating exercises and chances to interact with lots of fellow members. By sticking her in GK, they separated my parents from each other (not allowing co-habitation) -- the first time in 68 years! Their extra care amounted to clinical and regimented marches to/from meals, sitting at tables where no one talks, watching TV as mental stimulation and bedtime at 7pm. The Head of GK (with no medical background) holds a TON of power over how people live out their lives. Not to mention it is outrageously expensive! They are now thriving in new IA!

Great first impression/not meeting expectations

My mom has made friends there and she likes her little social group but she does keep to her apartment a lot lately because the communication has been so bad there. Many changes over the year, on the third exec director, and have had too many chef changes and some weeks without a head chef, food has been bad. She pays for the meals it is all included but instead she buys groceries and cooks for herself. They lost the cleaning crew and the regular cleaning schedule lapsed, also included in her monthly rent, they never communicated what happened or when it would restart. My mom moved in under a special rate, locked in for two years, it is almost [fee removed] for a one bedroom apt, it includes all amenities, meals, weekly cleaning and rides to appointments but as you heard, she is not using much of it. In one year I am sure her rate will skyrocket, other folks with a 1 bedroom pay over [fee removed]!! She won't be able to pay that, especially if things stay as they are! So many other little things, she is always calling and complaining to me. I had a long talk with the prior executive director but a week later she was gone!

Terrible food, limited activities, poor communications, poor care

My father was there, in assisted living. Food was horrible and institutional. Activities were quite limited for more active residents. Nursing care was poor. Medical oversight was poor. It is also very hard to reach anyone in nursing or management by phone or email, and emails and messages are not returned. My active father became bed-ridden and dehydrated with an undiagnosed urinary tract infection and overdosing with anti-depressant, and lost 10 lbs (wasn't ever weighed) while they told the family he suffered from depression. He ended up in hospital and then rehab and then we found a new ALF. I would never want a family member in a place like this.

I was previously a resident at Portside at Grande Dunes. I would not recommend Portside to anyone. The meals were very repetitive and not that good. The two of us were paying almost $[removed] a month and it is definitely not worth it.

Disappointed

Before I put my mother in an assisted-living and now a memory care, I heard so many horrible things about these type of facilities. In light of that, we search long and hard to try to make sure we found the best place. At this point, I’m not sure if there is a best place. From the beginning Celebration village Forsyth has had some of the worst communication that I have ever experienced. You have to beg and plead and throw a tantrum for someone to communicate with you about some things tha they were supposed to do in the first place. There is no one really there who takes responsibility or seems to play a role of authority where they make things happen, it just doesn’t exist. Unfortunately, I feel like this is another one of those for profit facilities that does not give a damn as long as they have the bare minimum of warm bodies working in the facility. And lastly, in this description It states that there are walking trails for the residence and that is a lie. There is not one.

My loved one was previously a resident at Prestige Assisted Living at Mira Loma and the experience was not very good and was overall poor. I ended up moving my loved one to a different place. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Prestige Assisted Living at Mira Loma to others.

food is terrible

After living 80+ years through the depression with next to nothing, and building from scratch their life savings to pay the exorbitant amount Point Pleasant asks to live there, given the meager tasteless thrown together food they offer at meals is absolutely criminal. I am disgusted by the greed of holding out on hiring a decent chef to produce good meals for what could and should be the highlight of these resident's day. They are constantly out of the most basic food items and will get anyone who is willing to cook, even waiters who have no experience cooking. To add insult to injury they raised the rent hundreds of dollars per month recently. This is totally unacceptable, and they should be ashamed. Sincerely, an angry son
