I selected Kings Grant House because the facility was small, very clean and it fit my mother's budget. The Marketing & Sales Director gave KGH such high praises. I was told that my mother's room would be cleaned & ready for her to move into on the date I specified. When I arrived on that date, the room was dirty and the roommate personal items were all over the room as if she had a private room. I spoke to the housekeeper and she informed me that she didn't know anything about a new resident moving. She went to get the head of maintenance, he came to the room and he didn't know anything about a new resident moving in either. The maintenance person went and got the Director, [name removed]. [name removed] wasn't aware that the room wasn't ready for my mother to move in either. Why would the Marketing & Sales Director assure me that everything would be taken care of when my mother arrived? My mother has been there 3 weeks and it took the staff 2 1/2 weeks to get her medications right. [removed] I have spoken to the Director about this problem and he assured me it wouldn't happen again .... well it did. I am going to request that the Director, [removed], remove the roommate from the room. My mother's budget is very tight and she cannot afford to move into a single/private room. Something has got to be done, after all my mother is not the "problem". If I can find another nice/clean and affordable assistant living facility, I will be moving my mother ASAP.

Kings Grant House did not end up being a very good fit for my loved one. The setting here felt much more clinical than his previous residence, the residents were all fairly high on the care need scale and most of them were in wheelchairs. It felt very claustrophobic and could be difficult to navigate due to all the wheelchairs. I also do not feel that the level of care and attentiveness provided by the staff were nearly as high as they promised when we toured. I would not recommend them, based on our experience.

This facility does everything they can to get you in the door, but once you're in the special treatment ends. I helped set up her room which was impeccably neat, clean and classy. Now it looks like a tornado hit. Dirty clothes strewn on the floor, stains on the bedspread and her loveseat, throwing things in the wash that I specifically labeled on a sign that it needs to be drycleaned. Nothing is where I put it. She is dressed in mismatched clothing, her toenails were so long that they were growing into her skin even though a podiatrist was there to see patients the day before I noticed this. She has lost her hearing aids numerous times and no one appears to be looking for it. They either don't put them in her ear or they put them in the wrong ear. $3200 and she doesn't get to use them. She was dressed for Easter service in a white sports hoodie that was covered in black stains. She went a week of being listless before someone brought it to our attention and she wound up with a pneumonia and spent 5 days in the hospital. The food is undesirable. They want to bump up our monthly rate because she went from 7 to 8 pills a day! This is ridiculous. Now they are talking about moving her to an area where she would get more care with another increase in cost. It is rare that I see any staff when I walk in, and lastly there is no welcome desk. Anyone can come in and go as they please with no accountability by staff. I am disappointed in the lack & quality of care. She has complained that the aides are too rough with her in getting her out of bed as she has a bad back. She was supposed to be using her walker, but everytime I have come to visit she is always in her wheelchair, and now she is too weak to walk on her own. Her health is declining and I'm sure it is in someway linked to her lack of quality care. There is a great turnover in staff. The ones that have been there a while provide good care but there are too many transient workers.

The management at this facility leaves much to be desired. The workers appear to answer to no one. The food is terrible and unless your loved one is able to pretty much take care of them self I would not recommend this facility.

Our experience with Whispering Woods has not been a good one. The care just does not seem to be in line with the price that they charge at all. They never left us feeling confident about the care our loved one was receiving. Our loved one has incontinence issues, and there were a few instances where it felt like if we had not pointed an accident out they would have just left it until later. They were also very difficult to get a hold of, whenever we would call in with a question we just had to keep trying until we got in touch with someone, they would never respond to messages.

Up until recently I'd have probably given them a 4 but now I'm in the neighborhood of a 2. Mom missed 3 meals over there because they didn't go get her. She had fallen here about a month ago. They're very short staffed over there. The fall was not their fault but she broke two ribs and fractured her spine and needed a little extra care and on 3 occasions she missed meals. She missed supper one night and when I finally got a hold of them at 7:30pm they told me they were feeding her then. She had a peanut butter and banana sandwich for supper that night. I was very disappointed with that. The cleanliness probably sold us on it first; it's a very neat home. There's been a lot of staff turn over. There is only one lady that is still there from when we moved mom in 4 months ago. It's definitely changed. If Wheatland can get their staff under control and get more people I'd give them a better rating but I can't do that today.

Started off good but quickly went downhill. The lack of permanent front desk staff, lack of weekend staffing, issues with personal care, lack of effective responsiveness from management and more made us make the decision to move our loved one after only a few months. Additionally, the rates are high for such a low quality of service.

There is NO communication! Staff don't know what is going on. All I hear is "I'll check on that" or "I'll ask so and so". NEVER get a straight answer. As far as I know they have had 4-5 directors. Staff turnover is frequent. There are only a couple staff members I trust. You just never get a straight answer and returned phone calls do not happen! I have had many conversations with residents that live there and they are not happy. I also have noticed many more empty rooms in the last 2 months. As soon as I can my father will be transferred out of there!

The first time walking in, I knew this wasn't a good place. The managers that work at The Landing are very rude and have no gratitude. The food is very gross. Someone was waiting 40 minutes just to get some soup in his room. I don't recommend this place. STAY AWAY. The only good thing is they keep it somewhat clean. Also, the aids are nice, but some of them are very young. It is very expensive, and I think they have changed the name a few time, for an odd reason... Anyways, take your loved one somewhere.

My mother spent a month at Commonwealth memory care in Cedar Bluff, Va. I have a number of concerns. First, the aides seemed to be more concerned with cell phones than with the patients. I have arrived more than once to find that my mother was not given food because she did not go to the dining room. I had to request a tray be sent to her room or I suppose she would not have been fed that day at all. The food was one of the few positive things about the facility. It was home cooked and delicious. My mother was left alone most of the day with no interaction with anyone for hours at a time. The aides did stick their heads in the door every two hours but that was about it. There were supposed to be activities everyday, but I didn't find that to be the case. Patients were left for hours just sitting in wheelchairs. The entire atmosphere of the facility was depressing. Needless to say I transferred my mother to a different facility which I have found to be wonderful. The staff treat the patients with respect and great care. I would not advise anyone to leave a loved one at Commonwealth Memory Care in Cedar Bluff, VA.

Good in the beginning...then months ago key personnel like Executive Director, Director of Nursing, Marketing Director all left! We placed our loved ones in another facility...it has really gone down hill! Suggest the state go in unannounced and does an evaluation of their memory care!! PLEASE...DO NOT RECOMMEND that place to any others!

I am not happy at all. The facility is beautiful as is the room. Quite a few of the caregivers seem to have a chip on their shoulders. You might want to do some research before choosing this facility. I regret choosing this facility for my loved one.

Some of the head people in the office doesn’t seem friendly at all it’s 2 rcas that does a wonderful job and I really appreciate them for being so nice to my loved one

I was initially excited about having my dad stay with this facility. The salesman ensured me that the staff were well-trained to handle difficult patients with dementia, as I made clear my concerns about their ability to handle his behaviors. I was assured that this was a common concern and that within the first month, he’d likely be fine. The salesman even developed a plan with me to get him into the facility initially. However, from the time we tried to admit him, there was a lack of communication and follow through. The salesman did NOT make the staff aware of the initial plan, so we had to abort that. I do believe the nursing/caregiving staff did their best with my dad’s difficult personality, attitude, etc. However, the situation could have been handled much better. Unfortunately, we had to hear from hospital staff when he was admitted for pneumonia that the facility may not accept him back, which was the first time we were made aware of such issues. We moved him then.

AVOID this place if possible. My mother was a resident here for 3 years and at first (when it was Saybrook at Haddam) it was great. The food was freshly cooked, and the staff was nice. Since Commonwealth took over about a year ago, it has gone downhill. The food they serve now is NOT freshly cooked, it's from an institutional food service and is most times inedible. My mom constantly complained that the fish was dried up, the chicken was so tough you couldn't cut it and there was no fresh fruit or veggies. Due to circumstances that my mother needed more assistance, I had to move her out. She fell in July and was in rehab for a month. After finding out that she needed more assistance that Commonwealth couldn't (wouldn't offer), the Executive Director refused to work with me on the charges and insisted that I give a 30 day notice. I ended up paying for 2 months that my mother didn't live there. And then after being OVERCHARGED, I had to fight for the credit that was due to me.

Overcharged by a lot for everything. Sent mother to hospital immediately if something didn't seem right. Meal tray was left in room for a month so there were maggots & bananas were left out for a month too. Mother waited, at times, a long time for care that was promised much earlier.

Comment on quality of care. We were still in the first week transition period, not visiting so mom could adjust when another patient had an altercation with mom, knocking her on the ground. An aide called to tell me about the incident. I asked to speak to mom and her speech was very slurred. It was then that I asked if mom had been given a drug. The aide stated yes, per the facility's policy, all parties involved are to be administered a sedative, regardless of who initiated the aggressive behavior. Mom got out of bed that night and fell, fracturing her hip in 2 locations. Due to her age surgery was not recommended. Based on her extremely slurred speech earlier, I belief the sedative made her woozy, causing her to loose her balance and fall....After her fall, obviously the family had regular visits. During that time, the nurse and aides were very sweet, attentive and extremely helpful caring for mom. Unfortunately, due to mom's memory loss, she did not remember her injuries and fell a couple more times before passing away.
