Commonwealth Senior Living

The care services get a 5 but only because Mom had wonderful care from Hospice of VA (3, if only facility staff). Many activities were offered but Mom did not participate in many. I think that more staff should be hired with nursing degrees. To many of the CNA's, it was just a job. Maybe pay should be more in order to get more qualified staff. I will say that the administrator, [name removed], was great!! She addressed any issues I had!

Honestly availability. I really wanted The Oaks but there was no rooms available. My biggest concern right now is money. Two people moved out last month because of running out of money. My mom's life savings will last 5 years. It's clean the staff are kind. They have had a shortage of staff but that seems to be improving.

Shop around. Don't take anything for granted. Pick the right facility for your loved one, not for you! Watch the expenses! Sticker shock is very possible.

I moved here in the middle of November. Everyone has been very nice to me. It’s not perfect but what place is. I have a nice spacious room and a private bathroom. I brought my own TV and bedroom suite. Overall I would recommend the facility.

I would recommend to others. The day to day staff is very helpful. Management staff is continuing to navigate. We picked them because of the location and availability.

Minimal "issues" overall. Of course everyone/every place should never rest on their laurels. We are never perfect. So we should strive to always improve. I liked that they did Teepa Snow dementia training with staff! The management was very sensitive to our situation. And they were financially accommodating-working within our specific constraints. They continue to be good to work with!!

For the most part, it is the better of similar facilities. Personally I think they could do a better job of communication. After 5 PM, could use more staff. I've been there in evenings & needed assistance for my loved one so I pulled the cord. Very slow response on more than two occasions. Also cord cannot be reached by patient in memory care when in bed. They do a great job on programs & trying to engage their residents in activities.

Overall, we have been very happy with Commonwealth from the time [name removed] (our advisor from A Place for Mom) recommended Commonwealth, [name removed], the sales rep, and most especially [name removed] , the Director. The meals have improved greatly this week since they hired a new chef. I think [name removed] and the staff are working very hard to making this a welcoming space for Seniors. I do wish there would be more outreach to get my Mom involved, but she is an introvert! The exterior is always decorated beautifully for the various seasons.

I was given a live video tour and could see the place in real time. They also offered monthly placement where some places wanted a yearly commitment. The price was reasonable.

My father is I memory care and I think the aides do the best they can but they are understaffed, especially on the weekends. Their philosophy is to let the patients do their thing, whether it be up all night or walking around...which I appreciate but the patients need more supervision than they are getting. The staff is always friendly and helpful, but clearly overwhelmed with so few of them per shift. Things could be improved if they just had more staff.

There is not enough parking for staff and visitors, but the staff at the community is very good and we would recommend Commonwealth Senior Living to other families who may need a place for their loved ones.

The dining room is exceptionally clean and the food is good. The activities team is great and close to the residents. Individual room service is lacking. ie bed changes and through bathroom cleaning, and windows

I can't speak on the meals or dining, have not eaten there since Commonwealth took over. As far as activities, there are activities listed on the board in memory care are not being done while I am visiting. The residents sit and watch often childish tv shows and while I was there this past Monday once the tv show that was playing ended it was repeated. For value for cost, the bills that Commonwealth sends are confusing.

It was clean on the tour, everyone was very nice, the price was reasonable when compared to others, and the location was very convenient. It was between Commonwealth and [community removed] for us. The location and parking was ultimately what made us choose there.

I’m still so impressed by the fact that Commonweslth Senior Living communities routinely bringing even the memory care clients to activities off site in the community - baseball games, ice cream, parks, museums, etc. I also like that most of the care staff have worked there for years and treat the residents like family. Communication between program (admissions, nurse managers, etc. and families could be better though - more frequent and not just related to crises.

The eating area floor is half-cleaned (I've watched this several times,) and it's often apparent that my loved one has not been recently bathed. Clothes and bedding have gone missing - I assume to other wards. The meals (lunches) do not show a lot of effort. I would probably recommend CSL if they were cheaper, and I feel that the staff, in general, does the best they can with what they've got.

My husband died right after Christmas. The staff at King's Grant were always helpful. All the staff seem to genuinely care about their job and relating to the patients. It is an older facility and doesn't have the most up to date equipment, but I always felt they did the best they could to care for my husband. I did not get that feeling in most of the other places I looked at.

My loved one was previously a resident at Commonwealth Senior Living at Grand Rapids and the overall experience was good. Based on our experience, I would recommend Commonwealth at Grand Rapids to others.

They do a good job in all areas, but there is room for improvement. Management could specify aides exact duties as some seemed to avoid less pleasant duties. Most issues involved staff shortages, but I feel they were always advertising openings. Any matter brought to executive director was handled immediately.

There have been 3 different chefs, the current one is great so I hope he stays. Everyone is very friendly. They always say "this is your home" if my parents say they don't want to bother them.
