This is about the memory care portion, also know as Clairebridge. When my mother needed memory care I first encountered Clairebridge in Gainesville, FL, I like the unit there (all memory care in a stand alone building). I liked the facility and staff better than the next available national company, Emiritus. But following discussion we determined it would be more advantageous to be closer to my residence, so we investigated Clairebridge at Horizon Bay (Clearwater, FL). Here too I was impressed by the dedication and quality of the staff. The facility is clean, safe and well run. I feel that my mother gets the attention and services she needs while the staff is courteous and respectful. At Horizon Bay the memory care unit is only 20 rooms in one wing of the building on the ground floor. They have their own eating area, as well as an outside garden area easily accessed.

I have been a resident for 3 years. This is my home now and I'm very happy and comfortable. I have many friends and we try to participate in as many activities as possible. The activities are to my liking; there are many ways to keep busy. As a matter of fact, I'm the Vice President of the Residents Council, which I enjoy! The council's job is to find new ways to improve our everyday living. I have the support of my son and daughter who live nearby so I feel more fortunate than some other residents, but Horizon Bay tries hard to accommodate everyone's needs. The Horizon Bay facility is just one part of the much larger Brookdale community but it still manages to feel like a cozy home.

I am so glad we found Arbor Oaks. Is it perfect? No...nothing is going to be perfect when dealing with a dementia patient But at least here many of the aids actually do CARE about your loved one. All I know is this...I can sleep at night knowing (for now) that she is safe. She is clean. She is being cared for. She is eating. And honesty folks, that is all you can ask for. At the very least she should be clean, in a clean safe environment and being fed. The other place she was she had none of that. And on "a place for mom", the dismal place she was formerly at has a higher score..go figure. Trust your instincts and do your homework. Always remain your loved one's advocate. Expect a few bumps in the road as this is normal transitioning. Here is what you should NOT expect: Do not think you can just drop off your loved one and never come back or come back monthly. You HAVE to remain on top of things. And why wouldn't you?? I will forever advocate for my Mother regardless of where she is.

I chose Wickshire for my mom because they had a couple employees who spoke Spanish and for me it was important to have someone she could talk to when she needed help. She was also with Treasure Coast Hospice and while at Wickshire their nurses would see her and keep me updated. Unfortunately mom's condition was getting worse and she was at that facility for only two weeks when she passed. Her passing had nothing to do with the care she received, it was just God's will and her time to go. I would recommend Wickshire, even though mom's time there was short I could tell that the other residents were well taken care of. The manager of the memory care unit was very nice and would answer any questions that I had. Many of these facilities are quite expensive and not many people can afford to pay for them and have to struggle to pay. I cared for mom until I couldn't anymore, my mental and physical health was being affected. I thought that maybe she would be there for at least 6 months as per the cost but God had another plan.

If you put your loved one in any ALF it's best to check on them often and staff because things get missed. It's also good to put certain notes up in their rooms so the staff can understand where things go etc.. At this place they went through staff changes for a while because of new ownership. So it's important for caretakers to get to know the staff, know their names, their schedules. I still think in this place the weekend staff is weak and somewhat lackadaisical. Leadership on the weekends needs improvement.

Mom moved into memory care from home I was surprised at how all she adjusted to being there. She liked being around other people and the facility is small enough where it’s not too disorienting. That was the reason I picked it in particular as opposed to the larger fancier places where I knew she would be lost when she left her room. The staff seems very nice. Most important I always find her clean. Her room is kept clean and neat. The facility is well maintained even though it is older.

We went to our first visit just to have something to compare with facilities closer to me, but the staff was so warm and inviting. The residents were gathering downstairs for bingo and they were also invited pleasant. It felt like family. The place is small enough that everyone seems to know everyone. My brother loved the food and there must be plenty of it because he doesn’t eat the snacks I bring anymore. The staff has done everything they can to make the transition comfortable There have been some growing pains with the meds but I’ve been assured that will be resolved.

Since my mom got there the marketing director quit, a new financial person & nurse had just started and I just heard they fired the executive director! Better communication with family members is needed. We had some growing pains when my mom got there and if I did not have private caregivers with her I would not have known what was happening. All in all it is a decent place. You just need to make sure the staff knows what your loved one needs.

The van to bring them to Walmart, doc appt ect...has not been used/moved since my dad has been there the last 6 months. However, based on the experience we have had so far, we would recommend this community to other families.

We are confident Dad is in a caring place; there can be improvements. The cleanliness is reflective of dads messes though. Everyone is friendly. One person wasn't always, but she is no longer there. All the attendants are helpful and kind. The medication management is confusing. We briefly used the service & are thankful dad is able to manage his medications. I've enjoyed some meals there and they serve the residents well and give options on the menu. They always have activities going on & keep the residents involved in the community. I am thankful Dad is in a good place with people who care!! Also thankful for patriot angels who helped us secure funds through veterans services. God is good! Thank you to A Place for Mom for helping us find a great place for dad lol!

The worst has been meals on the weekends, specifically breakfast--if they get one. Cooks consistently don't show up, calling for a late breakfast that might not consist of much. It's been a great place for her! She has met many people, made friends, and is happy with what is provided for her. Based on this stage of her life, it has been the ideal place for her to live.

Overall, very good but there is a notable difference sometimes between the night staff and daytime staff in terms of care. Less oversight (night) = less care. They are undergoing a change in ownership. The food is a sparse selection, they are often out of basic things like orange juice or a breakfast meat for days at a time, and it just isn't very good. Steady decline over last 3-4 months.

What we like the most about this community is that we feel good leaving our loved one there because she is happy and well cared for. We would absolutely recommend this community to other families based on the experience we have had so far. I've had friends and relatives in understaffed homes and all you see is neglect. The Collier is one of the best.
