Review for Somerset Gardens Senior Living

Everyone was very kind on the staff. There was just several incidents with my aunt falling out of bed or out of the wheelchair that they thankfully let us know, but something that kept happening over and over again so I don't think that she wasn't looked after as carefully as she should have been.

Hoping for improvements

Generally, it's pretty good except they do have quite a few kinks that they're trying to work out. And I hope they're able to. There's also some staffing issues. If I had to give them a number now, I probably give them a three but I'm hoping that will go up in the near future. I am hoping that with the new coordinator handling the memory care unit they will be bringing on new hires and there will be, better training. One of my big concerns also is that the GM of the Chelsea need some training himself as to what memory care units are and should be. He thinks he knows it but yet when a very typical situation happens, he'll claim that they may not be prepared to handle it. So my, thinking is they can't be on the fence they're either in the memory care business or they're not. A few of us are having issues with that so hopefully we'll straighten that out in time.

Brand new isn't always better

I would not recommend this facility to other families at this time. They are still experiencing growing pains and need to get processes, staff, and administration issues worked out. I wish we would've moved my mother-in-law into the Chelsea Greenburg.

I thought they knew how to take care of dementia residents but they don't. I would say if you have a loved one that needs Memory Care do not bring them here. They do not know how to care for residents in the memory care facility. The rest of Assisted living is probably great.

Very short of Staff/Wellness Center

Yes the place looks like a hotel and very clean, food and food service very good. The problem is they are very understaffed and becoming dangerous(People falling etc..) You must keep calling them to get things done. The nursing center keeps losing staff and just not qualified.. They raised the fees incredibly as well after a year which I find immoral Everyone is pleasant enough but unfortunately, it seems they are understaffed.

My unfortunate Atria experience

My loved one had adjustment problems and we were concerned that it would present a problem with staff being able to handle them. After discussing this we were assured that there would be no problem and we thereafter agreed to move them to the facility. Unfortunately their assurances were false and the team failed my loved one. They sent them to the hospital numerous times, essentially for a time out, repeatedly, before they had me bring my loved one to a behavioral health unit in a local hospital, which was weeks later. It was terrible and they should've never told us they could handle my loved one because there was never any indication that they could have handled them once we signed and paid.

our families experience

The Chelsea community itself is very beautiful, it is always extremely clean and the staff are wonderful - that we have not had a problem with. However the quality of the care could be improved, with assisted living we think there should be more assistance - especially for the cost and what they charge. There just needs to be more attention to detail and awareness regarding our loved ones care

This was old and dated. It felt depressing. The community was renovated from a Howard Johnson to an assisted living community. They had very old and dated décor.

This community was not as warm and homey, or welcoming as what I was looking for. It was up to date and brand new it just did not have that feeling to it. The tour was very good at this community.

Atria at New City is a beautiful, brand new facility that is everything a family could hope for. The attention to detail for residents shows a level of care that is obvious. However, make sure you ask for details about the level of medical care they will provide before you put down a deposit. We had put our deposit down and had begun to move furniture in to the apartment we thought we had secured for my father. It wasn’t until a week before he was supposed to move in, that Atria told us that he had medication and medical “red flags “they were concerned about. We were devastated to find out yesterday he would not be accepted into their facility. We had to remove furniture we had delivered and I needed to frantically find a new facility for my father. Atria is a “social model” that has specific guidelines we were unaware of for medical needs. Make sure you know in detail what the tier package you are buying into offers before you put a deposit down and get your hopes up.

I toured at Somerset Gardens, and I really liked the community overall. [Removed] was the sweetest lady, and the community was lovely. My only issue was that they removed the carpeting in the community because of spills, accidents, etc., and now the place lacks a bit of the homey, comfortable feel I think it would have otherwise. As a result, it is left looking a little institutional.

Today we received the refund due to us after numerous phone calls avoided and not answered. It took 3.5 months to receive it after too many false promises. My main concern was the resolution for my 91 year old mother sun downing was to call an ambulance and bring her to a hospital that they said initially they weren't happy with. That hospital stay lead to my mother's death. She was active and somewhat independent. After two days she was transferred into memory care. Memory care did not offer much stimulation for her. The 11 women sat mainly in front of a television that was so low, I couldn't hear it. Her total stay was 2 weeks and 2 days. Maple pointe puts on a good show but Memory Care doesn't offer much for patients that need to be stimulated. We were also told we shouldn't visit as much to get her acclimated. She had no idea where she was

My mother was not accepted for their facility (memory care/assisted living) based on their assessment: reasons of risk/fall (she’s wheelchair bound - can’t stand or walk without assistance) safety awareness/level of confusion/impairing judgment. My mom currently has brain syndrome after suffering a fractured spine and broken hip while recovery from her FS and hospitalization, anesthesia, pain, suffering and past history of strokes. Medicare only allows 30 minutes of PT 6 days a week (not enough time at alll for somone who requires a higher level of therapy) she’s been confined to a wheelchair. I was extremely baffled by their decision, though that’s their policy. My visit was lengthy and transparent of her care.

Did not have a good experience

We did not have a good experience with this community at all. It seemed like a nice enough place when we were looking into care options, but within a few hours of my loved one arriving he was left alone and allowed to fall twice. Based on this experience we could not recommend this place to anyone.

BEWARE

BEWARE My mother began in independent living and shortly thereafter went down to Enriched Housing on the 2nd floor. I came to learn that the head of the unit, [name removed] with the backing of the administration, pushes residents out of the unit because there are not enough rooms for those coming in from independent living. [Name removed], et al, forces the residents to the memory unit or the nursing home. Some families took their resident out of the Amsterdam, some acquiesced and I got a lawyer who successfully kept her in the unit. At that point, her room was rarely cleaned. [Name removed] would not allow the staff to talk to me or they would be reprimanded, or worse. They had my mother examined by their own doctor and when he agreed with me that the Enriched unit was appropriate, [name removed] and a social worker tried, unsuccessfully, to have him retract his assessment. Also, the food is poor: sugary drinks land low quality desserts.

Terrible experience

Administration is awful. The place was filled with bugs that look like worms. Under staffed. I had to bath my dad for the first few weeks. They messed up my dad's meds where he was being over medicated. There's not enough activities to entertain the residents to keep their minds going. They do not place residents in the right units (memory care vs assisting living). Front desk staff was amazing especially [name removed]There were so many things wrong with that facility.
