My Tour Experience at Somerset Gardens by Chelsea Senior Living

This was old and dated. It felt depressing. The community was renovated from a Howard Johnson to an assisted living community. They had very old and dated décor.

My tour review

This community was not as warm and homey, or welcoming as what I was looking for. It was up to date and brand new it just did not have that feeling to it. The tour was very good at this community.

Things I wish I had known

Atria at New City is a beautiful, brand new facility that is everything a family could hope for. The attention to detail for residents shows a level of care that is obvious. However, make sure you ask for details about the level of medical care they will provide before you put down a deposit. We had put our deposit down and had begun to move furniture in to the apartment we thought we had secured for my father. It wasn’t until a week before he was supposed to move in, that Atria told us that he had medication and medical “red flags “they were concerned about. We were devastated to find out yesterday he would not be accepted into their facility. We had to remove furniture we had delivered and I needed to frantically find a new facility for my father. Atria is a “social model” that has specific guidelines we were unaware of for medical needs. Make sure you know in detail what the tier package you are buying into offers before you put a deposit down and get your hopes up.

Lovely People, but a Little Institutional

I toured at Somerset Gardens, and I really liked the community overall. [Removed] was the sweetest lady, and the community was lovely. My only issue was that they removed the carpeting in the community because of spills, accidents, etc., and now the place lacks a bit of the homey, comfortable feel I think it would have otherwise. As a result, it is left looking a little institutional.

Our tour was good

Things went well on our tour here, the staff were friendly and did a very good job showing us around the community and answering all our questions. My mom was only looking to come to the day care for a couple days a week for now so we felt it wasn't quite the fit for her.

Today we received the refund due to us after numerous phone calls avoided and not answered. It took 3.5 months to receive it after too many false promises. My main concern was the resolution for my 91 year old mother sun downing was to call an ambulance and bring her to a hospital that they said initially they weren't happy with. That hospital stay lead to my mother's death. She was active and somewhat independent. After two days she was transferred into memory care. Memory care did not offer much stimulation for her. The 11 women sat mainly in front of a television that was so low, I couldn't hear it. Her total stay was 2 weeks and 2 days. Maple pointe puts on a good show but Memory Care doesn't offer much for patients that need to be stimulated. We were also told we shouldn't visit as much to get her acclimated. She had no idea where she was

Visit and Assessment

My mother was not accepted for their facility (memory care/assisted living) based on their assessment: reasons of risk/fall (she’s wheelchair bound - can’t stand or walk without assistance) safety awareness/level of confusion/impairing judgment. My mom currently has brain syndrome after suffering a fractured spine and broken hip while recovery from her FS and hospitalization, anesthesia, pain, suffering and past history of strokes. Medicare only allows 30 minutes of PT 6 days a week (not enough time at alll for somone who requires a higher level of therapy) she’s been confined to a wheelchair. I was extremely baffled by their decision, though that’s their policy. My visit was lengthy and transparent of her care.

Did not have a good experience

We did not have a good experience with this community at all. It seemed like a nice enough place when we were looking into care options, but within a few hours of my loved one arriving he was left alone and allowed to fall twice. Based on this experience we could not recommend this place to anyone.

BEWARE

BEWARE My mother began in independent living and shortly thereafter went down to Enriched Housing on the 2nd floor. I came to learn that the head of the unit, [name removed] with the backing of the administration, pushes residents out of the unit because there are not enough rooms for those coming in from independent living. [Name removed], et al, forces the residents to the memory unit or the nursing home. Some families took their resident out of the Amsterdam, some acquiesced and I got a lawyer who successfully kept her in the unit. At that point, her room was rarely cleaned. [Name removed] would not allow the staff to talk to me or they would be reprimanded, or worse. They had my mother examined by their own doctor and when he agreed with me that the Enriched unit was appropriate, [name removed] and a social worker tried, unsuccessfully, to have him retract his assessment. Also, the food is poor: sugary drinks land low quality desserts.

Terrible experience

Administration is awful. The place was filled with bugs that look like worms. Under staffed. I had to bath my dad for the first few weeks. They messed up my dad's meds where he was being over medicated. There's not enough activities to entertain the residents to keep their minds going. They do not place residents in the right units (memory care vs assisting living). Front desk staff was amazing especially [name removed]There were so many things wrong with that facility.

Not recommended for dementia patients

This is a rating for the assisted living floor. They do not know how to care for dementia patients. They sent my mother to the hospital in an ambulance every week during her three week stay here - for regular dementia behavior. After the 3rd time, she was so overmedicated and the hospital had to keep her for a week to regulate her medication. Somerset Gardens gave us no choice but to pay their gigantic fee for a 24 hour private aide, because she could not come home. As far as value, we signed up with a special deal, but overall the monthly fee seemed reasonable. A good value compared to private pay.

I moved my mom. I was not happy. I would give everything a 1. The overall experience was not good. Aides kept my mom's room a mess. Mom was in memory care and confined to a wheel chair. All aides were unfriendly and didn't care about my mom as a person. For several months before we left they only had one person in charge of memory care and she tried her best, but it was impossible for her to do everything. Aides didn't care about my mom. They over fed her and mom gained 40 lbs while in there care. Activity directors cared more about my mom than the aide's, but the activities were basically bingo and coloring. Costs were better than other places, but you get what you pay for and it wasn't good. The director presented herself as caring, and would listen to me complain, but was not able to maintain control over her very lazy staff.

STAY AWAY FROM MEMORY CARE

Only apply for memory care if your loved one with dementia is quiet or timid. They are unequipped and unwilling to care for other non-aggressive manifestations of dementia (some inappropriateness). Lack of transparency with family. They left us in the lurch a few days before my husband's planned discharge from rehab. After we had put down a deposit (refundable), picked out the room and furnishings and had packed up his things at home. They had assessed him 3 weeks earlier and had concerns they never shared with us. We were totally blindsided.

Dementia Unit

My family had a terrible experience in the Maple Point Dementia Unit. They sold a false set of goods and didn’t properly care for our Mother. Not only were mistakes made with her health care, but even more so, her emotional care was nil. They did not seem properly trained to deal with the many things that come along with Alzheimer’s
