Lessons Learned

The Gables of Canton is a beautiful facility with very friendly staff, however, they seem to have a little less expertise as advertised for their memory care. With Alzheimer's, there are 7 stages and my father-in-law was in late stage 6. I went through all due diligence and I had a comparison MRI done with our neurologist. I shared everything with their medical staff. My father-in-law was among the 7% where it effects him in a way that he reacts violently. Instead of recognizing behavioral patterns, they were going to kick him out. They had came up with a way to evict him out of their memory care unit. I had to go up there to Ohio, print out the laws, and sit down with them. I told them that they were counting on the ignorance of the general public not knowing the law. I'm not that guy and I quoted the law which states that I needed a 30 day written notice and they'd need to find a suitable place. Suitability would be, in my estimation, judged by a judge and I was fully prepared to retain a lawyer. They also weren't recognizing that he was dying, he was in stage 7 at this point. We got supplemental care and the last day I was there he began aspirating. We made the decision to take him off of his medication(s) and bring in hospice; he passed shortly after that. They failed to realize this. Like I told the head nurse [name removed], he's a nice guy, but if he's going to be in this business don't be afraid to call the Alzheimer's hotline and educate yourself as much as you can. I had to do the same for my father-in-law. I had never cared for anyone in my life and I had to learn for myself and for him, and it did pay off. All in all they treat people well. Their food and amenities are excellent. Just like almost every other place, they are understaffed and they have a lot of really young people who need formal training. I had the advantage of being in the military for 24 years and I'm used to running big groups of people, accessing situations, thinking independently, etc.. If you get someone who is 18-20 years old, they aren't mentally prepared for the level of adversity they may face - so that's really what happened. I interviewed 17 places before choosing The Gables; I developed 24 questions to ask each community and I did the video tours. All in all, The Gables is a good place. They will work with you on a lot of things and I get they have to protect their staff. I told the director that they could best protect their staff by training them, and paying attention to body language. If someone has a history of striking others, don't stand directly in front of him or don't have your back to him. He only responded to females that way, I'm still not sure why. I know he wasn't easy. I took time off of work to care for him myself. I came up with my own strategies for engaging with him, to keep him calm and ease his anxiety. You have to be creative and figure out what makes that person tick. I've learned a ton from that. I'm currently working with the Northeastern Tennessee Association of Alzheimer's and I get it's a lot to digest and a lot to get used to. The community is broken up into two sections and they primarily have more residents who are assisted living, but they have two memory care wings with 14 beds in each wing. They have very nice rooms, they're very clean. The staff are pretty doggone attentive to things. The clients can have food whenever they want. Someone will drop something by if they're hungry and it doesn't matter if they didn't want to eat during meal time. They cater to them in that way; it's just that when you reach that point of them feeling like they aren't able to handle it anymore. When they got to that point I was determined that he wasn't going to be moved again, as it wasn't fair to him. The only reason I wouldn't give them a complete five is because of the youth of their staff and the lack of training in handling the difficult ones. I told the director that you can't cherry pick things and they should be prepared to handle different types of patients. I would recommend The Gables of Canton to people who live in that area; but I would encourage people to ask very appointed question, for example: if this arises, how would you handle it? You can't just talk to Alzheimer's patients and there isn't a "one size fits all". You have to tell them your care plan, you have to orientate your whole life around what their needs are. At the same time, you can burn out; you have a family and a life to take care of too. You have to keep all of that in mind.

Great memory care unit

The memory care unit seems to be very nice and the staff have been very wonderful to my loved one. They took the memory care unit to the fair and have even done things like a family day for activities for the residents.

Gables Memory Care

We had trouble finding a place for our Aunt because she had a stage 3 bed sore. The Gables accepted her and has worked closely with Hospice and us to care for all her needs. She has been kept comfortable and clean. The receptionist and unit staff are always kind, considerate, encouraging, and helpful. Very pleased.

A Positive Experience

I would tell others that the community has been a good fit for my loved one. It is a nice community. I would recommend the Sunrise to a friend. Some of the activities include: outside speakers, animals from the zoo, bingo, exercise classes and more for the residents.

Caring community

Our mother has been a resident for two years. There is a staff culture of teamwork and caring that gives us great support as we deal with our mothers decline. Even though she is now incontinent, the staff make sure that my mother is always clean and fresh. The nurses are quick to respond to any changes which has been crucial for my mother's care. We visit daily and are grateful to have our mother at Oak Leaf Manor South.

Efficient Staff

So far, our experience with Oak Leaf Manor has been a good one. The staff seems very efficient with what they do, and the really do care about the residents. The food looks very nutritious, and they seem willing to make accommodations to the residents dietary needs. When I visit, there always seems to be activities going on as well. I'm really impressed with this lively, comfortable community.

Doing well

This is a really nice community, the outside exterior needs some updating but inside it is clean and comfortable and my mom is doing well here. We got her furniture moved into her room so she feels more at home and she has already started making friends. The staff is very friendly and they have been helpful as well, There are a lot of different activites for mom to take part in and she and her friend like going to church together. I would definitely recommed taking a tour here to see the community first hand.

The staff are great

I am very pleased with my mom's move here and she is happy with her room which is a shared room and it is spacious. My mom has had some medical issues and will need surgery and the staff here have been great in working with us, their very attentive and caring. Mom likes going to the dining room and visiting with the other residents and she likes the food which is a plus. There are a lot of different activities offered to the residents and I would definitely recommend coming for a tour to see this community.

Things have gone well with Waldon Woods so far, I'd say overall the care is pretty darned good! It's a nice looking place, and they do a good job keeping everything clean and well kept. They definitely feed them well! The food is excellent! My Mom seems happy, and so far I haven't heard any complaints!

The Village of Heather Hills

My mom has been there for 3 months and has a very nice large apartment. We are impressed with mostly everything except the food. She and many other are very very disappointed with the money they pay. I take her to forest hills foods foods and meijers to get groceries which she is mad about. She doesn't want to cook anymore. She's 96 and in good health but went there too because of not having to cook anymore. I do believe they need to do much more in the food department and get more experience help with people that know how to cook good meals. I am pleased with the care as they do check on her. I pick her up and get her out couple times a week. They have already raised her rent so please have some help get to everyone there since many are not

Review for Vintage Knolls

I will say 4 overall because I have seen both my mother and sister experience. The location is idle for me to visit daily. This allows me to see all aspects. The facility is very attractive. Prices are competitive but more attention to residents such as bed making etc. add to the monthly fee. Each additional care adds to the cost. Meals are good and enough. Events are nice with variety.
