Avalon Memory Care

I was impressed with the company's attitude about the business. Also, the longevity of staff is impressive. Both houses I visited - Quarterway and Glendora-- seemed to be a fit for my husband.

This RCH was nice. "Out in the country" feeling. Liked the director a lot; was easy to talk to. His facility was nice but seemed a bit crowded. Lots of patients in the smallish living room; one a hospice patient. Some of the patients were roaming; many were quiet. There were a couple of men there-one a former car salesman. The facility seemed clean. Two African cooks in kitchen-very friendly. Large backyard area.

During our experience here it seemed very dark. Whenever I would go in to visit all of the residents were predominately just sitting in front of the TV - from what I saw there were not many activities or engagement going on at all.

They keep everybody in the common area during the day so it does not take many staff to monitor what is going and it is easier to monitor their needs. We do think that is a great concept. They are understaffed just like many other places but for those staff who are working there, they are trying their best.

They've not been really forthcoming in letting me know when things happen, like bruises or falls. They didn't let me know that my loved one was having issues and not sounding like herself, which was evident when I talked to her directly. I ended up having a call with the nurse practitioner, and we came up with a plan. I requested a lab, and it still hadn't been done nor had the nurse practitioner been by to see my loved one several days later. With the elderly, that type of thing can be deadly. Consistently when I go in, there's no pillow cases or top sheet on the bed. I went to see her before bedtime and they hadn't put her night gown on when they put her to bed. They don't put her shoes on. That's not what I would wish for her. Her shampoo, body wash, hand soap, and toothpaste have all disappeared, and I have no idea what's happened to them. There's never any toilet paper, tissues, towels or washcloths in the room. The staff all seem really nice, it's a clean and beautiful facility, and my loved one seems to like it there. But I'm not real pleased with the care that she's getting.

We've not ben able to see the community in person except a few times due to the pandemic. The times we have been there the building itself is nice. I think they might be a little understaffed. Other family members state that the communication from the staff isn't what they would like it to be. They have been real good to assist our loved one being able to smoke on the patios.

It is a beautiful new community. Absolutely wonderful tour. They were very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. At the time of my tour, they did not have 24-hour nursing care, and my dad needed a hoyer lift, so it was not the right fit for my dad. Did not provide 24 hours per day nursing care which my father required. Would have to hired physical therapy; not provided by this facility.

We toured this community for care.We talked with the staff and they did not seem organized at the time. They did not know we were coming and they did not answer a lot. The community was clean and the menu was appealing. We would recommend this community for older residents for the care of a loved one. This community might want to prepare more. We would recommend that families make sure that the staff is available to answer questions for the families needing care.

My cousin is happy there but my aunt is not. She's very cognitive and she doesn't fine all the other people to be so cognitive so there is no one that can really hold a conversation with her. My cousin has settled in very well. Everyone is on his level. It's somewhere that he can live the rest of his life but it's not somewhere she would be happy. It doesn't have anything to do with their care, it's just not a great fit for her. We've had great cooperation from everyone there. It would be a good fit for a person with dementia or Alzheimer's.

Staff is friendly. Will see water on floors which can be safety concern. Do not see activities. Food is sometimes too spicy. I would not think the majority of older people would like spicy food. Some items are not able to be cut with plastic utensils.

There are not enough caretakers for the # of residents for #1! The ones there have to cook, clean, give care! We all pay enough to have a dedicated cook that cleans also. Hire a cook/maid for goodness sakes! The care takers there are overworked! Your mngt let 2 (both) overnight caretakers go on vacation for one month with no logical plan. Your owners /mgnt seem more worried about lining your own pockets then having a decent team! [name removed]is the hardest workers and she is 65! [name removed] is loud and does nothing but cooks decent but [name removed] has no help when its just those two.

They take great care of the residents. So long as the resident is able they take them out to the living area to watch or sleep to the tv and to the dining room for meals. They spoon feed them if need be and talk to them. I also can't say enough good things about Hospice which was recommended to me when I first interviewed at Avalon.

They had a wonderful care giver that used to mom the floor all the time. My boys won't touch anything if it touches the floor now. They can't wait to use hand sanitizer once we leave. They have had a HUGE staff turnover. Only 1 person there that was there when mom moved in. My mom seems happy, but can't tell me what happens. She is clean for the most part. I have to ask for them to wash her hands. They are usually dirty when we arrive. It is the same crap. You can predict what they will be having for lunch. Residents aren't excited about most of the meals. I've never seen them do any activities. They have painted Mom's nails once. Mom doesn't sit still, so that could be the issue. I think they watch tv 90% of the time. Cost is cheaper, so you get what you pay for. They have had quite a few resident move out in the last few months. We are currently looking at a new place for my mom.

The management lies, gaslights and a few other things. After a very, very, needlessly, completely unavoidable rocky start, my family member was not unhappy there. And, after all said and done, she was where she needed to be.

The selling point was the ratio of resident to staff. Communication wasn't as much as I would have liked. The facility went through a significant staff turnover, and during that time, the cleanliness and laundry suffered. That situation eventually improved. [name removed] passed in March, so I'm no longer involved with Avalon.

Strong points are residents spend a lot of time out of their room with others. Negatives are staff seems to turnover & not sure who is in charge if there are issues you need to speak to someone about.

I would recommend them they have done a good job it's just expensive.

Last couple times I was there my mom was dirty. I could tell she had an accident.

The staff is friendly. Housekeeping-they keep everything clean. Communication-pitiful, they do not keep any calendar for activities so there is no way of knowing if anything is going on, no social media presence to keep family informed, no email or newsletter with updates or upcoming information. The move in was very easy and they were very accommodating. The meals-best to be expected for a place like this, however, no menu provided and no choices given for each meal. Suggestions for improvement-THEY NEED AN ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR!!!! This is one of my biggest complaints. Mom has been here 4 months and still there are not daily activities for the residents. Sure, they bring in a singer once a month, they have special holiday meals, they have added a weekly visit from a comfort dog, but day in and day out...the activity of choice for the employees is to have the residents sit in the recliners and watch tv. (While I might add, the employees play on their phones!). I have not once walked in to see any other activities going on. Also, the program portrayed to us at the initial consultation does not really exist. They do not take the residents to the bathroom every 2 hours and there is no hydration program in place! If they hydrated, they would have to take them to the bathroom! As far as referrals, the sad thing is that I think all places are the same. The one plus is that the staff are friendly and the facility itself is aesthetically pleasing and clean. I would urge any I refer to come visit for an extended time. I will not move mom, but it has been disappointing that what was sold to us is not what goes on here.

The people that work there were wonderful. Super helpful and friendly. There wasn't really anything for the residents to do except watch tv. I'm understand that the workers were doing absolutely everything to keep the place going so there wasn't really time for activities My mom is no longer there because there just wasn't anyone she could talk to. The other ladies that could still communicate had their own delusions and would tell my mom stuff and get her scared. It just wasn't a good situation for her. Avalon was good and I don't have anything bad to say about it. It just wasn't a good fit for my mom's needs
