Make sure you ask the right questions

This facility has nice studios, spacious & clean. Sales staff, [name removed] & [name removed] are wonderful. A special thank you to [name removed]and [name removed], they are phenomenal. This however is NOT A LICENCED NOR SECURED memory care. One employee went as far as to say she was not going to go get my mom if she left the facility because she was older & wasn't about to go chasing after her. I was completely transparent about my mom's condition, told them she is exit seeking, & AFTER an assessment with THEIR medical team, I placed her with their recommendation. She was there 3 days & they asked me to come get her so I did. She was hospitalize for 13 days. During that time American House SH called to dismiss her. The Medical team supervisor [name removed]and Nurse [name removed] seem in over their heads for what goes on at American House SH. The business was fair & refunded my mom's money immediately. My mom ended up displaced & scrambling for a place to live at her end stage of life and it didn't have to be. She deserved better.

Our families experience has not met our expectations

Not a good rating overall... my mom is bedridden so she doesn't do any activities. Most of the Medical Team staff is very unfriendly with the exception of a few that are compassionate and very nice. Food is horrible. Honestly the place is horrible and would not recommend to anyone

Not the place for those needing more help

The facility charged over [removed] per month for full assistance yet many days they did not assist my mother with her bath's, take her down to meals or make sure she took her medicine and I also found pills on the floor. All of this was discussed with the facility. I would not recommend this facility to anyone needing additional help. It's okay for people who don't need assistance. For those you need transport to the dining, help with bathing and medication - this is not the place to put your elderly parents.

Not recommended

The move in was easy, of course. But they have to get you in as a bare minimum before they can not do what they promised as well as they promised to do it. They do not seem to deal with incontinence very well. They don't want to wash more than one trash bag of laundry a week but still complain about the amount of laundry being too much. They never stated there was a laundry limit or that incontinence was a special care need that they don't accommodate. Housekeeping isn't on top of keeping the floor clean either. If you know the resident pees on the floor in the bathroom, it should be checked daily and cleaned. They do not. A family member does it themselves. In addition to laundry they say is too much. They took then returned the only bag they took stating it was too much. Someone there got hold of the new debit card just received for the resident and made a month of Amazon purchases. We know it happened there because the card wasn't used anywhere else and was set up only for the facility to bill to. They do not communicate with the family unless put on the spot. They were not helpful with communicating with the pharmacy/doctor to fix several issues with how the scripts were written and filled. I would not recommend for any high needs resident. Not good with Parkinson's patients who fall a lot and are incontinent. The facility should have laid out, in a clear resident care plan, what they do not do and expect family to do. Too much money being paid for the amount of work still being done by family.

Reasonably Comfortable

I would recommend the community to others for their loved ones. This is a good value for me. Each American House depends on the location and community. This is the best one I have been at. This a good location, it can be hard to get deliveries. The community has transportation available for the residents. There is a podiatrist and barber that come to the community.

Other options for care.

I am not happy with the care at this community. The restrooms do not have fans in the restroom. It appears that they do not have air conditioning. It does appear that a few things are missing from his personal belongings. It appears that they do not always have a lot of staff members at times to help with the care of the residents. The menu seems to be appealing. I would suggest that other families tour this community.

Suspicions validated!

At first glance it appears to be a very nice place. Some of the staff are TRULY very nice and helpful. Some simply put on a good front. The food is NOT all that good. The med team that's supposed to be wonderful.....not so much. I think they will know what I am talking about. If you or your loved one needs a place to go, where you know they will be cared for with love; find a place that has security cameras all over.

I did not have a good experience at American House. There were several things that should not have happened that did happen. 1. They are to help new people meet the other residents in the building. This did not happen. They left my mom at a table in the dining room by herself, placing her at a table with a woman that was known to not eat in the dining room. This was not a new woman - she has lived there for 3 years and picks up her own tray of food and takes it to her room. The woman specifically told me that she prefers to eat alone and if she picks up her food she doesn't have to pay the food delivery fee. Another new woman they sat at that table the weeks previous to my mom moving into this building, didn't like eating alone and began to pay the fee to have her food delivered. 2. There was an argument the 2nd weekend that my mother was there between the cook and one of the young ladies that pass out the food. Mary was slamming dishes and food around. This wasn't the only time I saw the cook do this. It was quite loud and upset my mom and some other women there in the dining room. 3. They consistently woke my mom for breakfast, my mom, in an attempt to try to meet people, would get down to the dining room - only to be served oatmeal or cereal with no milk. There is a refrigerator right next to her table. Sometimes she would get there and have to wait 45 minutes for her breakfast, not being served until 9:15 am. 4. One day she overslept, and didn't get to breakfast until 10:00 am. They told her they couldn't give her anything and she could get some juice and just wait until lunch. She is diabetic - nobody asked anyone to cook anything - if isn't that difficult to give someone a bowl of cereal. 5. She apparently fell and they never notified me. They picked her up and put her in bed. 6. The required emergency button, residents pay to wear - they do not answer. The button was pushed - they came over 10 minutes later. 911 came before anyone checked on her.

Not a Great Experience

We are not very impressed with this place. When we first contacted them, we were under the impression that the residents would be able to go to the grocery store or drug store once a week, but they only go once a month. They have a "store" in the community, but all they have is a couple of Pepsi's, some candy bars, and toilet paper. When the residents have no where to go, they should have a better "store". Also, we were informed that some of the maintenence issues in my loved one's apartment have been going on since before they moved in. For the price, and with no utilities included, they should at least be able to fix a toilet or replace a lightbulb before someone moves in. I thought this would be a supportive environment, with activities, with busses going to the store, and trips and meetings, and people having fun, and that is not how this is turning out to be. My loved one is happy about the inside of the apartment and being able to have a cat, and the set up is nice. However, they really need an improvement of staff. They need people who have a heart for other people. It would be nice if they had a better staff who were in touch with the needs of the residents.

It isnt a bad place. My Aunt has lived there for a year now and we are constantly getting thing fixed in apartment still. i can understand when you first move in thing happen. And if she had been living there a long time. Her water in the shower still is not working correctly after all this time. My Aunt went into the hospital and when she came home I talked to the Medical Team staff to get her lunch and dinner for sat. and sun and would see how she was doing on monday. When i called Sunday after noon t check on her she told that she didnt get lunch and waited until 2pm then called. My Aunt was told she called the wrong area and the person hung up on her. SHe never got lunch and didnt think she was getting dinner so she made a cup of soup. After she finished eating they brought her dinner. The next morning I called my Aunt and got no answer. I call the medical team to go and check on her. They called me back and she was gurgling and unresponsive. She was taken to the hospital by EMS. Her blood suger was 40. WHich was caused by not getting the proper food intake on SUnday which when i called the Maedical team I was told SOrry we forgot. How do you forget to feed someone. I still cant understand this. They wil not take the responsiblity of what they had done. My is a dibetic. Which is even more reason she needs to eat. But even if she wasnt how can this happen. Why didnt the person whom she spoke with check into it?

Our Experience.

Before I moved my aunt into the American house facility a nurse came to her house and said they would be able to change her suprpubic catheter but when I moved her in they said they couldn't legally change it. I set up a home care nurse to change it every 2 weeks. One Saturday my aunt called me in the morning and said the catheter bag was leaking all over her leg, foot, shoe and chair. When I got there at 11:10 they said they called the nurse on call because the staff working wasn't allowed to change the bag. At 4:00 I was still cleaning up from the leaking bag and no one had heard from the nurse. I had to change the bag myself because I didn't want her going to bed with it still leaking. The following week I called Homestead and left several messages asking for them to call me to discuss the leaking urine bag. I did not receive a call back until I emailed them that I was moving my aunt. The food was ok. My aunt didn't love most of it. To enter or leave the memory unit you had to ring a bell and wait to be let it or out. One time my husband waited 10 minutes to get out. There were times when I was trying to leave and would ring the bell and wait because the aids could be busy but several times I would walk to the end of the hall and find the aid sitting at the table on her phone. There were also times when the aids working in the unit didn't have a fob to let you out and you had to wait until someone in the other memory unit came and let you out. The unit smelled bad most of the time. I don't know that they had activities for the memory unit. My aunt stayed in her room most of the time. Some of the staff were very nice to my aunt and wouldn't hesitate to help my her. [name removed] in the office was always nice and would help me with anything. She made sure I was able to get in and out the day I moved my aunt out.

Stay far away

The Medical Team is absolutely terrible. They let go everyone who actually cares. Their HR department discriminates. American House is going downhill the longer they allow TMT to reside inside their building.

Unsafe Facility for Memory Care!

My Mom was a resident in the memory care unit, which was staffed by an outside agency called "The Medical Team." They were not properly trained, & most of the staff were lazy & did as LITTLE as possible. A member of our family was at the facility every day, and yet my mother still suffered multiple injuries, including a catastrophic hip fracture while she was in hospice care, which accelerated her death significantly. The caregivers were not trained to provide hospice care, or to dispense medications after only 3 days training & no medical credentials, but that's how The Medical Team was run. The memory care unit is NOT a safe environment for the residents! It is my understanding that the Medical team has been removed from this American House facility.

American House Westland review

Our family had an horrifying experience with American House and we would never recommend this community to other families. Our loved ones room was rarely cleaned and had a very strong smell of urine in it. They rarely fed our loved one or helped our loved one eat. They were attentive whatsoever and just ignored our loved one in every area. We could not trust this place at all.
