We toured American House Sterling Heights Senior Living during our search for Independent Living for our loved one. The Assistant Director gave us our tour and she was great! The facility was okay, but a bit too small for my loved one's needs.

Good friends means good life.

Everything is pretty good, except for the meals. I would recommend this place though. It was cheaper than the other places. I would say, I have made a lot of good friends here. The heat, water, electricity I have never had a problem with. You can have one small pet here. The meals are small and not that great. The staff is nice though.

don't judge this place by its cover

the front desk staff at American House are very friendly, but there is a serious problem with the aides who work here. there were many many many times when my aunt was not taken care of in the morning. the lack of morning care would go on for hours and my aunt would end up sitting in her own waste by the end of the day. we noticed that this was also the case with other residents. there's a woman who works with either the pharmacy or as a med tech by the name of [name removed]. something was not right with her. she or they were always "running out" of my aunts pain medication, but no other medication she had was ever short. I'm not making any accusations, just saying that it was odd... my aunt had an emergency pendant necklace that she would press if she needed assistance with going to the bathroom or help with getting up and about. the response time was 15-30mins, but when they came to help they would turn it off upon leaving. so often times my aunt had to turn it back on and she may not have known it was off in other moments. simple things that we thought would be taken care of with patience and love here weren't, and it was just very frustrating. the food was okay and the room was nice. the bathroom did not have what I would consider to be a handicapped shower. it was regular sized with a shower curtain - that she had to provide by the way. the shower could barely fit a shower chair, let alone a walker. in the entire time she was there, she was never able to take a shower in her bathroom because it wasn't accommodating. from what we could tell, it looked like they were updating the bathrooms. they may be out of code and are now trying to fix it, I'm not sure. they would have meetings where they addressed our concerns, or when things went wrong they would apologize and say "it won't happen again". it seems as if almost no action ever came from the resolutions they provided us. [name removed] the med tech/pharmacy liaison would say to us "its your aunt, not our people". this was inappropriate to say because my aunt had 100% of her mental capacity, she was only there for her physical needs. my aunt was not forgetful and shouldn't have been blamed for the shortcomings of others. overall I would advise others to not judge this place by its cover; it looks great on the outside, but not so much on the inside. there are some situations going on here that should be looked into.

we toured American House and it only lasted about 10-15 minutes, whereas other communities took their time. the assisted living units were on the second floor, but the elevator was broken. the staff member(s) we interacted with just didn't seem interested in or eager to show us an in depth tour. she didn't willingly provide any information about the community or what they had to offer. we chose another community because American House didn't have what we were looking for.

You get what you pay for. This middle-of-the-road value. communication overall is good although they do have a different contact for each of the services we use. I would recommend this community to others.

A Unique Experience

My loved one was very content at this community during their stay. I would tell people that it is an older community. The staff were fabulous though. Since we were not able to go inside due to the lock down due to COVID, we were never able to see the inside of the community. My experience has all been during COVID.

Like anywhere some staff are great and some are rude and not good carers. Same breakfast everyday...Hard boiled eggs toast and juice. Boring, other food was alright. No memory boosting activities. LO in room all day with no one to talk to, so felt isolated. No snacks or fruit given, had to buy water since non was offered other than mealtime.

I had drove by this community for the a possible tour for my loved one and decided to not go in when I had passed the building. I was not impressed the area at all and everything just seemed a little to messy for my liking. The scenery could use some improvement.

I had a nice tour of this community and liked all that was offered. My tour guide was very nice and attentive and after my tour they followed up with weekly. The management to me seems to be making sure staff are doing things correct. They also did a great job converting the facility in a retirement community from an old school.

Clean place, needs to update decor. Needs slightly more variety of activities. Health aides are friendly but not enough of them. Can take a long time when you call for help. Ok value for your money.

Somewhat disappointed

Terrace building has a very small "living room" when entering the building where residents watch TV in a community setting. During the winter, I have seen residents wearing hats and coats while watching TV which is poorly located in this building because the door is constantly being opened and the cold air settles right in that sitting area. Requests have been made, to no avail, to put a television in the dining area which would be a warmer location during the winter. Not enough variety in activities for the residents. Residents need more stimulating activities. Activities on the monthly calendar do not often happen. I believe residents are taken care of, however, it's always in the best interest of the resident to have an advocate who sees that things are being taken care of. Of course, this would be the situation no matter where they were living.

What we think the community could improve on would just be the overall compassion, attention to detail, attitude, meeting dietary needs and actually providing the agreed upon services and following expected protocols.
