American House

This facility was very nice and very well run when it was Oak Crest. Since American House has taken over the care and staffing (what staffing they have) has gotten horrible. My mother is in what is supposed to be an assisted living, they have been moving Alzheimer patients into her building, and now she has to lock her door to keep these patients out of her room. Some days, she only eats once a day because the food that is prepared is not elderly friendly. Family members have to come daily to make her bed, make sure she has clean towels, toilet paper, empty trash. Many nights she is not getting her medication because the ONLY STAFF person is not in the building. Yes, there is only ONE person assigned to be on staff, and that person is out of the building, so if something should happen, there is no one in the building, and we have watched this person leave the building and not come back for 30-60 minutes. The other day while I was visiting, a resident in another room pulled the call cord.....the annoying buzzer went off for over an hour. My mother said that sometimes she hears that noise all night long. Very disappointed with American House!!

My father was in the memory unit at Elmcroft for 6 months. I would have moved him sooner had he not been in the nursing home or hospital 4 times during this stay. It took a while of being there to witness the negligence in care. There are long periods of time where there are no techs in the main living areas and the residents are on their own. The family members of residents end up watching after the residents to insure no one gets hurt. I was once handed a towel to clean up where water was spilled by a resident when I reported it - the techs and staff were in the hallway talking and laughing at the time and ALL the residents in the unit were left unattended. I moved my dad as soon as I could. They dropped him once because one person tried to move him instead of the 2 that were required. He fell and broke a hip TWICE while under their care. I was promised change but that never happened. Be careful putting your loved one in this place. And yes, I was there every day. At the end of his stay I had to pay for sitters to make sure he was taken care of until I could get him moved. I would not recommend this place for anyone loved ones.

My loved one has been at this American House for 2-1/2 years. Since first moving in the level of care needed has increased for my mom. I do not see the level of care and compassion among the employees as was evident when she first moved in. There is, for the most part, a revolving door for staff. The staff from housekeeping to the kitchen to the medical team are unfriendly at best, and grumpy. I'm pretty sure my mom doesn't get all the care we are paying for. Except for administering drugs, she doesn't get the escort service to meals that we are paying for, nor does she get the service of bathroom help that we are paying for. When I'm there I have never seen the escort service help her to meals or the bathroom. Laundry isn't always done on the scheduled day. There used to be scheduled entertainment at least weekly. Now, rarely. Workers are punching a time clock for a pay check, and the residents are mostly sad and unhappy. This place needs a complete overhaul from cleaning to services offered to the food served, and mostly, the attitude of the employees. There are a few who are kind and friendly, but that should be the rule rather than the exception. For $4000 + a month, I'm very disappointed.

We were really not happy with this facility for my Mother who was in very poor health. It might work for someone who can get around by themselves without a wheelchair or assistance but still the three floors and one small elevator are a problem. Many of the seniors are so bored they just go up and down in the elevator all day! My biggest complaint though was the medical staff, they are totally incompetant when in comes to medical care. If your parent has any special needs like oxygen, regular bood sugar checks or blood pressure checks this is NOT the facility for you!

My experience with the American house was not good. I moved my husband into their facility, and he was sent back to the hospital the second day. I paid over $[removed] dollars,not counting movers and furniture. They would not take him back, nor would they send me a refund.

Most of the staff are worthless, the food is awful and the activities are lacking and she spends less than 2 hours per day with the residents and some days no time.

The facility is nice and they seem to have a lot of event for their residents. When I signed my relative up to live with them they did not have or give us a welcome package. We had no information on moving in, they had a specific location where we needed to drive that was big enough to unload furniture, and it was frustrating because they run on a skeleton crew before 9am and after 5pm. We came around 5:30pm so it was a while before anyone could tell us where to go to move furniture. No one gave us the door code in or out so I was locked out and unable to pick up my relative for their doctor's appointment at 7:30pm. I had no additional contacts other than front desk phone number (front desk hours 9am to 5pm) to wait for about 45 minutes until a contracted worker showed up and let me in as they entered the building. My relative moved in with several bottles of pills before their roll pack pharmacy picked up their prescriptions, they lost some of the bottles and my relative told me she was missing medications. When I went down to speak with the staff they then realized they were missing medication, they were not checking what medication the patient was supposed to be taking on her doctors order and comparing it to what they were giving her. They had did not know they were missing medication even though it would have been obvious if the medication given was checked against the doctor's order paper work. I was told by nursing staff and the director that they would supplement her missing medication with a deceased patients medication that the director stated, " they had extra" until they could find the missing bottle. They started my relative had only missed one day of her 5 missing psychiatric medications however a week later my relative had to be taken to the emergency room for suicidal thoughts. She was was checked into a psychiatric facility for several weeks to readjust her medication. My relative also complained that several nights no one was coming to assist her at night when she would hit the call button for assistance. The first month their she fell several times and due to this lack of assistance and received several bruises and a large black eye. Know one called to report to me that she was falling or that she had fallen hard enough to give herself a black eye. I found out she was having these problems when I came to visit and saw she had a black eye. When I questioned the staff there was no report and the two times I have asked the director I am always assured that the one night shift worker has been fired, however it seems to be an ongoing problem. No to little assistance is available after 5pm for residence.

In memory care there was usually only one person on duty nights & weekends. No access to water for patients. Can't tell you the number of times we went in to find feces/urine on the floor. Trays of food would be left in room. We had to buy supplies to clean the room. We were told night & weekend personal didn't have access. We mopped every visit because your feet stuck to the nasty floor. At one point front desk had to let you end except there was no one close, many times residence let you end. They changed ownership but didn't improve services.

From the beginning I believe they miss evaluated my Dad's health and promised they could take care of him. Once we were over there, they said that they could not feed him that he would have to feed himself and he ended up getting dehydrated and went downhill from there. Part of the miss evaluation is partly the fault of encompass rehabilitation hospital. We were very much not happy with American House. My dad only stayed four days over at American House and was sent to the hospital and went downhill from there. American House is an assisted living home, not a nursing home and the current people working. There are not making proper evaluations.

The American House on Carpenter is not treating the staff appropriately, especially the wait staff. The executive chef is talking about suing the people who write reviews. He needs to be fired. My experience at American House on Carpenter Rd is not good because the Executive Director is not doing her job. She doesn't handle complaints. I will take care of it, and she is just blowing off each complaint. I left many complaints with corporate, and left a message with the ceo. Didn't hear back from him.

Never put your loved one American House. They do not communicate with the family. I had to report a tech the 1st week she was in memory care for picking at her. Her name was [name removed]. They do not have enough staff to help with changing diapers or showers. Her room was never clean. The woman's daughter that was sharing a room with my mother had to clean their bathroom on the weekend. Poop was on the wall and the toilet. These people need more care in memory care. They never gave my mother all her clothes back from laundry but she'd receive other people's clothes. Never changed her sheets on her bed either.

My father was not given the amount of care we expected. We were told things would happen but they didn't. Ex: RX could be provided by us and not their pharmacy. They were required by law to check on everyone every few hours but they didn't. If someone doesn't report their findings, it didn't happen. They are short staffed and only care about the money. Charge you for items they said were free!! My dad passed after only 2 months. We could have kept him home and he would have lasted at least 6 months! Since he passed, 5 or 6 other men have passed from that facility!! I would highly NOT recommend this place to anyone that loves their family! This doesn't even cover the damage and stress it caused my mother!

From the outside the facility looks organized, but inside it is not managed well. Night shifts are understaffed,communication is poor,& areas like residents rooms are left in unacceptable condition!! Hopes this reviews helps out.

Staff was rude not friendly. Walked in on my father multiple times in the bathroom when he told them not to enter. Language barriers. Administration was challenging to work with. Understaffed. Kept "running out of food". A plethora of mismanagement and poor staffing services. Aesthetically the place looked beautiful- but operationally this place was the pits.

They were not prepared for my mother on move in day. No one knew she was moving in. Her apartment shower was not working, there was a leak in her ceiling. She was only there 6 days. She developed a Stage II decubitus ulcer, because no one came to check on her even when she rang her call button. She did not have a working shower the 6 days they had to transport her down the hall to another bathroom. It was a horrific experience. I am a registered nurse, and did my research. I thought this was going to be a wonderful facility for my mother, but could not have been more disappointed. American House did refund my mothers deposit.

Pros: Kind/nice, Nurses are kina and understanding. 80% happy. Doesn't want to move out. Cons: All parties with alcohol, no puzzle with me. When husband when he was there no interaction with residues will say they'll do something but not following thurs especially directors.

Looked for months for a memory unit for my mom. Finally decided on American House in west Knoxville. My mom was accessed and and she was going to move in [date removed]. 3 weeks before moving she got sick and declined while in rehab. We had to pay the community fee which was [removed]. So today we went to get the money back since they accessed her again and denied her. They refused to give the money back. So my 84 yr old mother is out that money. We did find her a place where I hope she will be comfortable in her last days. The people are nice ,but please dont give them money before you are in there. It was very wrong what they did. We got the room cheaper because it needed work and we took it without them fixing it. Now ,of Course ,they say the money was to fix the room. Thats a lie! I will say a lady named [name removed] was very kind. Thats the only nice thing I can say.

If families are looking for a friendly environment, American House meets that requirement. Other than that, I would not recommend the American House to anyone seeking senior living. To be specific, they need to set higher standards for their employees regarding training and professionalism. They need to have a major overhaul in their menu and how the food is prepared and served. Lastly, the memory care environment did nothing to bring quality or dignity of life to the residents. My mother deteriorated so much faster once she was moved to memory care.

Staff goes through residents belongings they hide out in residents rooms on their phones and on weekends you won’t find any staff I was a visitor and helped a resident to their room because they were no where to be found we believe the two females left the building for at least an hour.And this kind of stuff happens every weekend I have found staff dancing in the back office this place has gone way down hill since 2020 about the time when Covid was happening they got new staff that are extremely unprofessional and are only there for a paycheck.I sure hope they clean house with this staff it’s more like a party on the weekends than a job and I can point out each one

My friend lived there for four years and when I visited her all she could say is how bad she was treated by the directors and a few care staff. Once she was moved up on memory care she died four days later because of the lack of care. She paid over $[removed] a month and the facility did not even send her flowers when she died. Same directors have returned and a few employees that pass around with them. Don’t expect things to get better. The ratings on here are over-exaggerated.
