New management company

Overall i am pleased with the treatment my mom is getting. She has made friends and seems very happy. My complaints are that maintenance is very slow to respond to requests. Mom has been there a little over three years and we have never had a care plan meeting with the nursing staff. We have never discussed any of her care needs. The food is not that good and I eat with Mom once a week so I know.

Needs some improvement

The staff overall seem pretty pleasant, my mother would say they are understaffed, especially in the dining area. My mother is dissatisfied with the menu choices and quality of the food served, saying they do not cater to the diets of elderly people, items being too spicy and salty or challenging to eat. The place in general could use updating, some fresh paint has been done, but carpet in hallways and furnishings in gathering areas are a bit worn and tired. There is a slight unpleasant odor in the hallways where residents rooms are. I would say my mother is not very happy living there but she says her next move will be a nursing home, so she is resigned to staying there until the time comes to move due to needing more care. They did give her 3 free months as a move in bonus which was very nice as she does have a limited monthly income, but overall I think the amount of money that she pays monthly to live there is not reflected in the quality of the residence. The first 2 months she dealt with house centipedes every time she went in her bathroom. She has requested that the outside of her window be cleaned, and that still has not been done. I would say that it is a middle of the road facility, there are probably newer nicer ones, and I'm sure that there are some that are below par. Given the short span of time that I had to place her due to her illness, I felt that it would be a pretty reasonable fit, but had I been able to take more time to choose I think I could have found somewhere better for her.

Review for Fields of Florissant

The facility is on a beautiful campus. Inside is very clean without odor. Nicely decorated. The dining area is clean and well maintained. The food has a great presentation. The individual studio room is very spacious. The bathroom is large enough for wheelchair and walker use. The walk in shower is large enough for a shower chair. Shelves in the bathroom to store personal items. The staff is very friendly, helpful, caring, and attentive to the clients' needs and family needs. This place could be phenomenal with a better management/leadership team.

Knoxville Landing

Knoxville Landing is smaller and older than most assisted living places. It has been retrofitted with such things as modern HVAC, sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, etc., the downside is they have problems maintaining it because of typical Corporate mismanagement. E.g. we frequently have false fire alarms and water outages. Their pluses are "breakfast cooked to order", an excellent "Food Manager", excellent "Activities Director", "friendly atmosphere". Food is typical "Sysco Fare", i.e., cheap food with fancy names. I am Independent so I cannot assess the nursing staff.

Amazing staff and facility - but it's a small community with limited food, transportation and activities.

The staff and the facility at Village of Olathe are wonderful. However, it has a very small population of independent living residents and this shows in the amenities. The shuttle is only available one set time a week and they are limited to one, one hour stop. There are some activities on the calendar that don't actually happen. For example, my mom has tried to go to their daily movie in the theatre room several times and no one is there. Activities only happen during the day, mostly in the morning. My mom sleeps odd hours, so she's rarely up and dressed before 11am. So she misses the shuttle, or chair aerobics or etc because they only offer them one morning a week. There are no evening activities and I rarely see a single resident after dinner, they just aren't out socializing as much as I saw at other facilities. No staff are available after 8pm. This is fairly common but bc this facility also has assisted living and memory care I thought it would be different. My mom's smoke alarm went off for hours one night and not only did no one notice, but when she wandered around to find help, there was no one anywhere in the building. The next day they told her she should call 911 - but there was no fire. She just couldn't reach the alarm and can't get on a ladder or chair. Eventually it stopped. The biggest disappointment has been the food. Their website says they have a "chef" but the serving staff told us that "different people come in and cook all the time". The quality has not been good. Sure, she can always get some French fries or a grilled cheese- but that's not healthy on a regular basis. And since my mom misses the shuttle which only goes to the store one day a week at 10am for an hour- that means my sister is still on the hook for taking mom to the grocery store every week. Which means more expense for us, and less socialization for my mom, and more challenges cooking with her arthritis. They also say they have a "bistro" so residents can pick up food anytime- but it's just yucky leftovers from the previous meal. From the tour, my mom thought it was easy to go items like cold sandwiches, premade salads, desserts etc. that you could grab if you missed a meal or didn't like the menu. But it is not that at all. Overall the staff is wonderful, the facility is spotless, the maintenance team is especially kind. But every time I walk in, the common areas are empty. There's nothing going on, and I definitely would not eat a meal there. We primarily moved my mom so she could get help with transportation, help with cooking and more socialization so it's a big disappointment from that perspective.

Not 100% of what was expected

Maintenance could be better. Broken glass door was told when touring it was being fixed that week. Over a month later not fixed. Was told they do daily check ins and they don't. Was not given code to get inside had to go to desk to have one set up. It too great on my expectations

Better than the Nursing Home

1. 3, [name removed] is a little lax at getting back to us when we have questions. The staff is wonderful, but management is a little lax. 2. The Manor has been very clean, it is old and some of the air conditioning units are in disrepair. 3. Everyone is very friendly and accommodating. 4. Now that we have moved into the enriched care, the care is very good. Although, there is a new case manager, The day she started, [name removed] and [name removed] were both out of town to a conference, very poor planning. 6. Mom has not complained about the food. It seems to be tasty and plenty. 7. There is a new activity's director, so things have been changing, and Mom doesn't always remember to go. 8. It is a little expensive, but when you add it all up, it is satisfactory. Be persistent.

Not First on my list

When I first moved mom in the management team was remarkable and the main reason we moved in. In the past few months there is a new management team and they are terrible. Never return phone calls, never return emails, communication with families about their loved Ones is nonexistent. I eat dinner with mom once a week and the food is terrible. There is not a chef at that location and the cook they do have only knows how to make grilled ham & cheese sandwiches! Effective this month there is a new management company and I will be contacting them for any potential changes to their operating techniques.

Our Family's Experience

Turned out to not be appropriate for our dad. He should have had a greater level of care, but we gave it a try, was wrong decision! Day he left he expressed chest & stomach pain to me. I in turn had nurse come to his room. Asked her what I should do, she suggested calling ambulance & going to ER. The nurses didn't really look in on him a lot. I think it was more often aides, who were mostly nice. And my dad was not at all happy that I made a big deal about chest pain, nor going to hospital!! He didn't at all like the food there. He had previously been at [name removed] which had tasty food & larger portions.

Wishes NOT honored

Well everything starts off great until you sign the contract. Phone calls or text are not returned. We have asked numerous times for food NOT to be brought to her so she can get out of the room and socialize. I understand it’s easier but that’s not what we want. She doesn’t know how to use the microwave so if she doesn’t eat it right away it’s cold and left in the fridge. Also, we have come by to visit only to find pills in her drawer or on the floor. This tells me that they aren’t watching her take her pills. She is on top of her meds and not one to hold them in her mouth or just not take them. OT and PT have been phenomenal. Also, she has been there almost three months and we are STILL waiting for the cable to be fixed. The WIFI is non existent so whenever we call her or vice versa, calls drop. Heaven forbid there’s an emergency! Last but not least, we understand that we’re suppose to supply toilet paper but when she ran out their response was “don’t know what to tell you

Needs Some improvement

They love my mother and she seems happy there. They need a proper cook, the food is terrible and I believe the cook only knows how to make grilled cheese sandwiches and open canned soup! Not sure what lunch and breakfast are like. But I do eat dinner there with mom pretty regular. She's been there over a year now and there still has not been any care meetings with the DON to report on Moms care. Also, communication with families is zero. I've called and emailed and no one ever gets back to me... if it was like this a year ago, mom would not be living there! Sorry to be negative, but for the price our seniors should be better cared for!

Aplaceformom.com did a wonderful job of helping us find a community in SE Rochester, NY. We selected the Gables of Brighton because of location, size, and food all-day restaurant style.
