This is No Place for Mom

My husband and I moved to Westmont Village a year and a half ago. It was a beautiful community. It is not that anymore. The grounds are extremely overgrown. Management is impossible to reach. You leave voicemails/emails which are usually ignored. When you do get someone, the pat answer is "I'll look into it". Then you are ignored again. I feel this is disrespectful bordering on arrogance. Our oven, toilet and leak needed to be repaired when we moved in. It took over a year to get the oven fixed and over 18 months to get a new toilet installed. (It was finally installed 3 days after I sent an email stating California law requires plumbing issues to be fixed within 30 days). The new toilet doesn't work properly. Management is aware of this and they will not respond. Leak has never been repaired nor has a broken stucco wall. Between all these problems and internet/ TV service being a disaster (outlined in other reviews), Westmont Village has become a very stressful place to call home.

If Internet and TV are important, stay away

I require high-speed internet and enjoy the selection that Spectrum offered. We were told there would be another better internet and TV provider soon. Now, 2 years later, we find out the truth. As the facility began filling up, Spectrum was on site daily fixing issues with the aging infrastructure. I had them out 3 times, but after that I was extremely pleased with the service. 450Mbps internet, 2 DVRs and plenty of channels to choose from. Here's what I had and what they migrated to: Speed: from 450Mbps to 6Mbps if your lucky. Wifi: My own router with full strength throughout the house, to a hotel access point that covers one room. Devices: Unlimited on my own router to EIGHT. I have 30 devices! TV: Whatever Spectrum Package I wanted to pay for with 2 DVRs to a basic package with 90 channels and none of our favorites, no option to upgrade or add channels, and some kind of cloud DVR we don't even have access to.

When we first walked in, it looked great. Then they took us off to the side where they have the dementia patients, and they were just sitting in chairs like they were drugged. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Be sure to check before moving in.

Be sure to ask what the current activities are before you move in. They do offer them, but the things they offer are just not for me. They have a program called Life Loop that shows all the activities for the day. At this time, there is no broadband internet availability in this zip code with any of the providers that I've contacted. And they're not able to accommodate dietary requests.

High turnover

We had to place our mom in March 2021. [name removed] the Executive Director was a great comfort in this transition, however management has changed hands and there was a big turnover in the memory care unit that is concerning. Poorly organized. Laundry is missing, and most the time my mom has only 1 pair of pants in her closet. I see more new residents in memory but no new caregivers. Caregivers in memory care need more help. I'm in the process of looking elsewhere. Sad because it seems it's all about profit. Our elderly deserve better!!

JUST HORRIBLE

My Father was put here because he didn’t want to impose on living with us. This place was close by our house. He did not want to join in on the activities, he is a private person. They hounded him every day to join in . He just didn’t want to. Well if he ever did want to , they charge to get him to go down there. He decided that a assistant living place wasn’t for him. So after his 30 days he was going to live with us. We got his final bill. They over charge him 3,500.00. So as his daughter I fought for him. They had things like they dressed him, my fathers never needed that. And the list went on. They would never return my calls : Finally when they did they still wouldn’t adjust the bill. So I called the state in .and their corporate office down south. Told them I taking them to court. We received his refunded $3500.00 It’s all about the money with Westmont Brentwood. .DO NOT TAKE YOUR LOVED ONE HERE! If you do “ CHECK THE MONTHLY BILL”

Would not recommend this community

In the beginning our experience was fine but they went through a management change and everything went downhill. Due to the covid restrictions the residents were confined in their rooms and the activities were shut down. We felt our loved ones car was neglected and she was not receiving the proper medicine.

Not what I expected

Some of the staff were great and some were no so great. Resident's medication needs were not priority. Some of the staff told my mother that they weren't there to provide those kind of services. The food was good and they offered a variety. We chose this community because a couple years ago I visited this place and the people seemed friendly and nice, the location was close to my home, and I was at this point familiar with it. I would not recommend this community if you needed a higher level of care because they were unable to provide the care that my mother needed. You almost need a lawyer to get through their legal department.

Not what we expected

Don't be fooled by going in and touring, they put on a good show, when in reality, they treat memory care residents like second class citizens. We were told that the resident would be included in activities but they were not. My mom's health declined because of the poor care and the community would accept accountability for it.

Moving out of westmont

Moving out of westmont assisted living After bladder surgery my husband was in the hospital for 39 days Westmont sent a nurse to the hospital to verify that he was strong enough to return to his apartment at westmont Part of the assessment was to have him count backwards from a 100 by 7s The nurse would not allow his wife to be in the room while she did the assessment or they would refuse him return to his apartment at westmont The doctors also called and talked to Westmont that he had no restrictions and could do what he had done before Westmont would not allow him back As we were moving from the facility were were harassed so much we had to call the police They are upset because of the reviews on yelp They are upset that people are hearing the truth about how residents are treated This is not a good place to live

Westmont of Brentwood is bad place to live

Horrible place to live My husband was injured on the job in 2014 Workers compensation sent him here because of the care required from him We are in our 40s We were told by the new director [name removed] that I am no longer allowed to stay with my husband We are currently looking for an apartment that has a roll in shower however she barged in our room today demanding that I leave I am not leaving my husband You are no longer allowed to take food from the dining room to your room They offer services to other residents but are not allowed to give my husband the Same services They have changed the date and time for cleaning our room and never inform us of the changes Yet he is charged 7k a month My husband is supposed to have a caregiver with him for the whole time he is in the shower Just in case he falls This is an additional charge yet they still leave him unattended because they only have 2 people on call and they get written up if they don't respond in 5 minutes Every time he asks for help they state they have to review his plan to see if they can charge more I have heard them say the same thing to other residents that are on a fixed income They get so scared of being charged more they just stop asking for help

NOT recommended!

My 99 yo father had been living at LSL for about two years. In that time, I've seen a steady decline in memory care to the point I finally decided to move him to a different facility. He had several falls onto hard concrete floors and had been neglected in an unheated room where I found him hypothermic and shivering uncontrollably. I had placed a walker and wheelchair in his room but I recently discovered they had been placed in storage or used by the staff in the common area. I believe not having them in his room where I put them when he moved there this contributed to his falls There have been other complaints about LSL's negligence and had I know this would not have subjected him to that experience.

Memory Care Unit Really Needs Improvement

My review is for Memory Care. Unfortunately I would not recommend placing a family member here. There are times when the unit is understaffed and they call in temp help who are not adequately trained. Currently they are trying to hire a director and have had no success in doing so. As for activities, residents are often taken to the activity room and placed in front of the TV. The current activity director needs to do a better job of planning actual activities. The management need to step up and make sure that our family members receive the care that they deserve!

Hopefully improving

There has been so many issues here in the last few months. When new management took over, many great caregivers left because of problems. My mother is in the memory carr area and until 2 weeks ago there was no activity director, ( a major problem for dementia)! People litery sat in one room and then moved to another, all day. The caregivers did their best but they never had enough help. I will say that in the last two weeks the company has gotten an activity person and more caregivers. My mother now seem more alert and happier! I hope things continue to improve.

Bad experience

Extremely dissatisfied with my father's brief stay. I wanted someplace with 24 hr. care availability while he gained strength after a hospital stay. They took a deposit and a full month's rent in advance with the understanding they would reimburse for services not provided after a brief, interim stay. After 9 days, I returned my dad to his previous living facility. I received a partial reimbursement for medical care not provided. Payment was not honored when the check was deposited. Beware of the business practices of this facility. When we arrived the unit I had toured didn't have any furnishings as viewed. Care received was adequate once the studio was made livable (after additional expense to purchase use of a bed.) After removing my dad from the facility, I asked for a copy of his care plan and after leaving, found I was provided with another resident's care plan.

Benefits of westmont

Bus/van has broken down multiple times They used to provide day trips for the residents to go places besides the grocery store but that is no longer available They require the residents to call out their own bingo They took away the snacks they used to provide crackers, cookies, granola bars, breakfast bars, bananas, for example now they only offer the same red apples every single day They used to allow you to sit at the dining tables and have lunch and take your left overs to your room Many only eat part of their sandwich and want the rest later That is now no longer allowed now if you want to take food to your room you have to pay a tray fee of 7.00 If you have laundry service your lucky if you get your clothes back the same day The clothes are not folded properly more like wadded up The house cleaners sometimes clean and sometimes never show until you complain When they over water the yard mud will go across the sidewalk making a huge fall hazard For active adults they would provide keys to the side doors to get in and out They changed all the locks and now you have to wait outside after hours for at least half an hour to get in So with people with dogs this causes a huge hardship They increase the price yet take more away

VERY FRUSTRATED!!

Getting in they love you, after sending my mom to the ER on 3-24 by mistake as admitted by Amy the care manager and told they would take her back they kept charging me for the room and was supposed to be sending invoices for care so I could submit for reimbursement. On 4-5 she refused to eat so it was Hospice or skilled nursing. Since then I cannot get a detailed invoice for reimbursement and they say they can't nor will they manually do it. VERY FRUSTRATED!!!

I discovered his wound on one of my weekly visits, his leg had become infected and painful. I took him to Emergency. His wound was cleaned, bandaged and he was put on Oral Antibiotics. They are understaffed and cannot properly watch there patients or keep their rooms clean. My Father was attacked by another patient and I was not notified.

A Wonderful Facade

Cottonwood Court gets a half star because that is the lowest possible option. I will give no identifying information as no one in particular needs to be called out. I have a family member who was formerly at Cottonwood Court in both of their buildings. The actual floor staff there is friendly and seem to be very hardworking but as you go up the chain of command there are serious deficiencies. Most of the "directors" have worked there for a lengthy period of time and are proud to share that with everyone. I believe in a strong leadership environment but friendships seem to blind the company leadership. The employee turnover rate seems very high (which is common in the healthcare industry). It seems as though the staff changes from month to month. The appearance of the buildings is seemingly nice until you look closely. The dining rooms are dirty, the carpets throughout are stained or soiled, apartment cleanliness leaves something to be desired and I have even witnessed team members closing doors of resident's apartments when a tour or walkthrough by upper management is taking place. Paint is chipping, wallpaper is coming unglued from the walls, there are holes or gashes in walls, and the whole place could use a dusting. Don't let the activities calendars fool you either. Looking at their calendar and newsletter you would think the programming is thorough and engaging but spend some time in the activities with your loved one throughout the day and you will see that they are not all they are cracked up to be. The food is second class at best. They promote an "extensive" menu but again, look closely and you will see a lot of repeat dishes and a lack of any real nutrition. Compare their 6-week menu cycle and it is more similar than they lead you to believe. If the above isn't bad enough, that was just describing their assisted living building. Their memory care is even below these standards. If you happen to be looking for memory care, ask to see multiple hallways in the building and you will notice that they promote the best looking hall at the time but most of them are not great. The entry to the building (Town Square I believe) is loud, the activities are chaotic and most everyone is asleep. The second class food prepared in the assisted living is even worse when it arrives in memory care. Dining rooms are messy, residents have food on their clothes, half are asleep and it is just not a pleasant dining experience. Directors attempt to address concerns but you cannot hide a fake persona. I never heard a floor staff member speak poorly of their management but you can tell by their demeanor and interactions that most are not happy. When touring their community they might let you interact with residents or their families but they are very selective of who you interact with. There are a few positives however. Most of the staff members seem to have a very caring heart and the place is nicer than "slum" communities. I attended a few of the larger events and they were also nice. I really wanted to like Cottonwood but when it comes to the care of my loved one during their last years, months or days, this place just doesn't cut it. Definitely check it out for yourself but keep in mind the notes I have provided here.
