Delightful new nurse

Never in my life have we met a more delightful young lady than [name removed], Director of Nursing. She made our mom feel that she was the most important person ever. She assured my brother and I to "trust" the team. We believe her. She is spirited and plans to lead the nursing staff to become great caregivers. The staff have assured us that she will be the best thing that will happen to the Rivers. The marketing team are sweet, but try hard to sell. They don't really want to answer questions about all the transition. In speaking to several tables of residents, they all are happy that they have a new nurse. We're excited, but cautious about our decision. We'll see. Mom's apartment is nice, but the community is old, dirty in appearance, and outdated. Our only hope, is mom gets great care. We hope [name removed] will lead the team to greatness. We love her!

High Price, Low Value

I have been visiting Skyline weekly for the past 6months to assist a friend who is a resident at the Terraces. I find this place to be WAY over priced for what is offered. Residents are paying for a 5 star experience and generally receive 2 star service at the most. Staff is friendly and kind, however, the place is woefully understaffed (and staff are severely underpaid). The result is missed medication times (delivery sometimes late by more than 8 hours), missed room cleaning (by more than a day), poor meal service, non-responsiveness to calls for assistance and/or service. Also, meals consist of a disproportional amount of processed foods and very little fresh produce. Nutritional content is low and quality of food is equivalent to a chain restaurant like Denny's or Shari's. Cultural activities are plentiful and generally good, however, exercise classes are geared to the lowest level of ability and are not at all sufficient for maintaining and building strength, balance, and flexibility. There is little to no effort made to generate a neighborly feeling among residents. If a resident does not make an effort to socialize and make friends, they will be fairly bereft of companionship and friendship here. I'm sure a nice profit is being made... I question their mission... is it solely about profit or is it about a high standard of service and quality of life? With the money they bring in here, they could have a higher proportion of skilled (and well-paid) staff: Whole Food Nutritionists, Chefs, Personal Trainers who are Physical Therapists and Geriatric Specialists, Occupational Therapists, Social Planners, a large vegetable and herb garden (they have the outdoor space for this) for residents to garden and partake of, daycare on site for staff and interaction of children with residents, resident pets, the possibilities are endless.

On a downhill slide

My parents lived here for a year mostly in the memory care wing. My father passed away during this time. I just moved my mom yesterday to a different residency. Staffing ratio, quality and quantity of activities has changed and not for the better. The new director talks a good talk but tells you what you want to hear and that's all. Nursing is good and we had 2 wonderful care givers but they don't have the tools needed to keep their residents active. You can't have residents wandering halls, sleeping in chairs and put in front of tv to watch cartoons most of day. On a upside the employees are very friendly and make you feel at home.

I HAVE lived here for a year. I got here just before new management took over. Since then in less than a year they have lost too many quality people. I am afraid what the next year holds. I am the youngest resident here and feel sorry for the older residents. [removed]

Not on Top of Their responsibilities

Expensive, understaffed, no centralized place for family to discuss issues with staff. The staff aides are very nice, but for 'assisted living' there isn't much oversight, assistance or interaction. My mom has been there for a year now, and she begs to get her toenails clipped. Staff always responds 'not today', and apparently today never comes. Food is pretty good, dining room staff are very good. But make no mistake, this is a high priced warehouse. Moving mom soon as I can.

Impressive sales pitch, but they don't deliver

We did not have a good experience with The Rivers. Initially we were impressed with them, their marketing team does a fantastic job selling the community. Unfortunately they did not follow through with a lot of the promises they made, and it ended up being a bad value in terms of care for the cost. They could have used a few more caregivers, the ones that were there seemed stretched very thin.

Don't go here

If you're looking for independent living with option to increase level of assisted level as needed, don't go here. There are 3 couples at a different assisted living facility right down the road that needed to move out of The Rivers when they needed a higher level of care. The independent living was fine and staff were nice but when it was time for a higher level of care, the administrative staff were suddenly not so friendly. They were more than happy to take the rent for Independent Living but my parents had to move when they needed more care. The move into a new facility was a very difficult transition for my parents. They had already moved once into a facility that they were told could care for them as their needs increased Very disappointing experience

I also went to this place last year and again it was okay, but really dark inside from what I remember; although the outside grounds were really nice. I recall thinking that I wasn't sure with my mom being Jewish (losing a lot of family in the holocaust) whether a facility that is German would go off really well. Not sure if this would work.

My dad was a mess when I visited. I asked for a washcloth, they washed his face but didn't get anything off his face, so I did it myself. Everyday they get wanilla wafers for a snack with juice, no variation. The care staff sat back in their office even with me and one other visitor present in the room. During our initial visit we were told they do three activities a day. We are not seeing this happen.

Unresponsive and high turnover

Extremely confusing billing structure to the point of inability to investigate discrepancies. Lack of communication and or caring about problems in general. Staff turnover constantly and residents as well, some employees confided in me and urged us to reevaluate their service. Parking is bad as indicated by relatives having to park in the street on some occasions because employees parked in the front lot. When brought to their attention again it fell on deaf ears. Poisonous hand sanitizer on each table in the restaurant of which they were notified twice only to have nothing done. Residents medication on the floor of the nurses office ( I picked up one and set it in front of her with no response five minutes later I picked another and did the same with no response ) My general opinion is the upper management is and continuing to hire the cheapest labor they can find to make their bottom line their main objective. Since Ive complained all of the sudden my Mother in law has been deemed unsafe and has less than a week to move. seems she was fine to live there for the 10 days after her incident but as of this meeting today she is not. The director couldnt even look me in the face because I insinuated that she was only worried about occupancy levels over patient safety . The restaurant staff and the food has always been excellent and has always presented themselves in the most professional manner.

Would not recommend at this time

There are some improvements this community could make - they could be up to code for one thing. When we moved in our apartment was fifthly and still has not been cleaned correctly. The bathtub has grease built up, the dishwasher does not work correctly, the garbage disposal has rust on it and it could use new appliances. Access from the lobby to the garage, there is no handicapped accessibility so it makes walking difficult. The nursing elder care services are questionable - but we do know they are working on that improvement.

Bad management. This place of Residence used to be top notch. It's run down, carpets are dirty, dogs running around unsupervised. Food is still being delivered in Styrofoam (still, after 2 years). The parking lot and sidewalks are a complete disaster waiting to happen. What happened?

Problem with management

My mother was here for respite care. They had recently had a management change when stayed here. They were extremely short staffed so they did not have the number of people they needed. They would not answer her call button immediately. It would take 30 minutes sometimes for a nurse or aide to come. They talked a good plan but the follow-up wasn't there. For the most part the staff was friendly. There were a few who did really good but there were two particular nurses who had bad attitudes, luckily one left. In general it was clean. I think they had issues with their house keeping staff and morale. She wanted to participate in activities but the staff wasn't able to take her sometimes. There was an issue with medication. She is very particular with her medication because has Parkinson's disease..They consistently got her medication time and dosage wrong due to the lack of help.
