What happened in the last 3 months?

My parents moved in to their apartment in May 2014. When they moved in, the place wasn't even 1/2 full, within 4 months, they complex is full to my understanding. We liked the location (closer to my house), the ala carte assistance menu, the nursing staff, the restaurant, everything. The apartments come with all the appliances and they are newer! the bathrooms are huge and room for a walker/wheelchair/power chair. The apartment even comes with full size washer and dryer in the unit! And, if the staff doesn't see your folks for a day, ie going to get the mail, visiting with others, they will do a 'check' on them (huge peace of mind!). Another reason we chose this local is there is smoking allowed on grounds in designated areas. Now, in the past couple months they have changed the management team and the restaurant staff? My folks were on the 30 meals a month program and the food used to be nummy! able to order off a menu if you didn't like was was offered as main course. Well, i found out end of Sept 2014 that the food is tasting horrible and they won't even go get take out from there as it's 'nasty' as my mom calls is. Now, they used to have an on site Chef, i think that person is gone. Mom said the restaurant used to be packed at all meals, that they even had to bring in new tables and chairs to accommodate everyone; now, she said there is plenty of room in the dining room because no one eats there anymore. Activities are abundant. The new director moved the smoking area to a different location, but that is fine, as long as these seniors who moved in and are smokers can still smoke on grounds, they are adults after all. My mom said he isn't very friendly, not like Dale A. was. Maintenance for repairs in the apartment are slow. Their garbage disposal quit working...there was electrical current going. they put in a notice, and at 8am, maintenance showed up with scheduling an appointment. Also, they have been waiting for maintenance for 2 months to remove a burnt out light bulb in the main bathroom because it was 'jammed' in there. As of today 10/10/2014, still not pulled. we'll supply our own light bulbs...but, if we remove the bulb that is in there, it will break the fixture. We also get housekeeping 2x a month to help mom. Well, they are 'adequate'. the scrub the floors, vacuum and scrub toilets and tubs. dusting...which is to be included...don't hold your breath for them to dust. Also, a lot of the staff have very thick accents and it's difficult for hard of hearing seniors to understand. so, from the time we first viewed the place in march of 2014 we would have scored them a 10 out of 10..now...maybe a 6 out of 10.

Review for The Rivers

The dining room, the food & service are very good, the staff has been very pleasant & friendly. There could be more things that could be done to help residents get settled. It is hard to meet people. There can be groups that have formed & don't seem too welcoming to new people.

Our families experience

Clean with potential to be a good active living place. More staff and better hospice care. My mom was there for less than a month before she passed. The only truly negative aspect was lack of staffing and care for a dying person.

We just started assisted living services and so far they've not been too good so that is affecting our rating right now. The food is pretty good. Up until now he hasn't needed any care and we're just starting out, but this is where we are. Value for cost - this is hard to answer right now, assisted living is extremely expensive and seems to be minimal care.

Nice building, but nursing skills lacking.

My family member came here under not so ordinary circumstances. I was looking for a NICE place. There are RN’s on during the day, but 1 LPN is responsible for the entire building on evening shift until morning. The evening/night crew are not trained on any sort of nursing assistant skills. The “nursing assistants” didn’t know how to empty a catheter bag. Don’t know how to transfer. Only 1 staff member knew how to operate lift assist equipment. I had cameras in my family members apartment and I saw everything. I have video of staff making fun of my confused family member. No one seemed to know the conditions of why each patient was there. Staff tried, but they just don’t know the basic skills of nursing assistants. I’m thankful I had cameras because I noticed my family member was dying, and staff did not. They wouldn’t administer morphine as instructed by hospice triage. The entire experience was very traumatic and eye opening.

Activity director is good and facility is clean. Biggest thing to improve on is the quality of care. Staff are rude and sometimes mean to my mom. Timeliness of response is slow. The other area of concern is the pricing/value for cost. Point system is flawed and manipulated to the disadvantage of the my mother. Lack of transparency is frustrating

Comfortable Environment

My parents live in an independent apartment and receive services from outside agencies. But I like that they are able to participate in monthly activities offered by the facility if they choose too. I liked the spaciousness of the unit, however the up keep of the property grounds needs some improvement; large pot holes for 2 years unrepaired. No updates to units, old cabinetry. Raised the rent twice in 1 year. Descent senior living for the price if your on a fixed income.

Fine for basic accommodations.

There have been some rather difficult hurdles. First, we cannot get the internet in some of the apartments. The maintenance of the building's exterior is not very good - the outside looks rather unkept. The interior is okay, very basic. They did put a new floor and carpet in before my loved one moved in, which was nice. The couple of maintenance requests they had to make were responded to. There's not a lot to encourage people to socialize in any way. And there are a lot of older people there, which has been unfortunate for my loved one. Generally it meets basic needs, but there isn't much in the way of forthcoming help/assistance for the residents.

Good staff, mediocre lifestyle offered

My mother moved here in May, 2021. We are very disappointed. She was promised outings, movies, a book club, great food, and even a "personal buddy" to introduce her to people. Due to Covid, none of that happened. Eighteen months later they are still bringing food to their rooms in styrofoam containers. The food is JUST AWFUL. They claim that the dining room had some sort of a leak, but still - couldn't they have figured something out? For activities, they still have to wear masks and are 6 feet apart. Therefore, nobody is making friends. My mother is outgoing, and this is the first place she hasn't made friends. Since they have all been vaccinated, I expected that they would make an effort to get my mother a "buddy" and introduce her, but that hasn't happened. Now, their van is damaged, and they can't do outings. The staff is wonderful. Really nice.

I would tell others that residents are left unattended when they are put in the bathroom for 20-30 minutes at a time. The management staff is awesome but the aids here are not very friendly at all which is my main concern. Due to our experience I would not recommend to others who are looking.
