Sunrise Senior Living

My loved one was previously a resident at The Jefferson. Overall, the experience was not very good. We even considered moving my loved one to a different facility.

We toured in the Spring with plans to sign/move in in the fall. The sales people were pushy, but we were firm. They invited my father to a dinner in May and he came home that night to tell me he put down a deposit- he was not clear that he signed a lease and was now responsible for monthly payments. Unfortunately, the unit he was given was one we had specifically said we did not like because the neighbor was a smoker and the smoke smell was VERY strong. He enjoyed living there, but the HVAC in common areas did not work and the elevators were down consistently resulting in FDNY response fairly consistently. There was also frequent turnover in staff which was upsetting to residents. Lastly, the 2022 increase was 10% and the 2023 increase was 11%- so after paying for a year rental and living there for 4 months, and seeing many friends leave, I'm moving out.

The only good things about the facility were [name removed], [name removed] and [name removed] I feel like they were the only ones that cared about my dad and truly had the hearts of a caregiver. We had to move my dad in when he was in the end stages of stage 4 lung cancer and was paralyzed. We were no longer able to care for him at home. He had a hospice team that would also come to help. Although we were paying Sunrise for a high level of care due to his needs, he wasn't receiving most of those services. I don't think Sunrise staff ever gave him a shower, they just waited until hospice would do it. A Sunrise caregiver actually gave me a hard time over the phone because my dad pulled the call string while hospice was there because (as she said) hospice should be helping him. We were paying hospice almost $[removed] a month, we were paying Sunrise. We ended up putting cameras in my dads room because of how rough one of the caregivers was with him. Maybe this facility would be okay for someone who is mobile and independent, but I would not recommend otherwise. I feel like there is too little staff for the amount of residents they have. It makes response time slow and the amount of time they spend taking care of the residents very minimal. They didn't even notice that he had open wounds, I had to ask them to bring Band-Aids to cover them. And then I had to ask for those Band-Aids to be changed because they never were.

The general areas of the community are kept clean and up to date, but the individual apartments - not so much. There is also no privacy.

This is pretty much your typical American nursing home. Privately owned, it serves to make the investors money. The food is pretty good, not outstanding; nourishing but nothing extraordinary. Mostly, the residents stay in their rooms as there are not a lot of activities, particularly lately.

We toured Sunrise of Hunter Mill during our search for a facility for our loved one. It was a very strange appointment. We waited a long time to be seen then the Director of Sales didn't even know their pricing and kept talking to me rather than to my parents.

It's taken me a long time to write this review because I was so angry with Sunrise of Jackson when we moved our mom to a different facility. Residents are making their own decisions about whether they want to get out of bed, eat or engage in activities. There are very few employees in sight when you need one. We could have left her in her own home where she had the same quality of life. She was admitted to the hospital several times in her short time there for essentially dehydration which caused other kidney and heart issues. She has not had one medical issue in her new environment and is thriving. She is up, dressed, eats her meals and is happy every time we visit. The Sunrise sales team talks a great game but when reality sets in they do not hold up their end of the contract. I would look elsewhere for your loved one.

My loved one had some usual requirements and they said that they could handle him, they really have not until just recently. There staffing has been short during the year, but they seem to be getting ahead of that finally. The staff are friendly, but the caregivers not so much.

The location of Sunrise of Arlington is good, and the community was clean. Also we found the activities coordinator to be wonderful. However it just felt sad, with few staff who seemed to care for the residents. It was a blessing that [name removed] was unaware. We would recommend the downstairs part.

Generally the experience we had with Sunrise of Arlington was OK. However, I am still being billed with no itemization or explanation after having been told that our balance was 0. I would tell others looking into Sunrise to make sure that your bills will be itemized when received. I would recommend only depending on what alternatives may be available. There were some staff that who were outstanding. I would like to give special thanks to [name removed], the concierge.

I was here for 30 days as I transition to Thailand from MD. The room first assigned had a 3” mattress on top exposed metal bed springs. Upon my complaint offered a slightly larger unit. I m sure no cleaning after last guest. Closet Doors falling out of tracks HVAC system needed routine maintenance needed exterminator. Food mediocre. Processes missing or not explained. This place is very tired and need a total overhaul and a greatly improved administration. Rate c-

Based on our experience, we were very disappointed with Sunrise of Wayne and felt some staff members were not able to appropriately handle interpersonal or the social senior challenges that came up very well. We had to move our Mom.

I was previously a resident at Sunrise of Metairie and I did not like this facility. The nursing care was inadequate. Also, the residents were not friendly. Based off of my experience, I would not recommend this facility to family and friends.

Sunrise of Gurnee was a good community tour; however, it was on the expensive side for us. Also, I didn't think they were a good fit for my loved one.

I think this place would be good for assisted living only. This location is not meeting the care needs that are being billed for, with someone that has higher needs. They are understaffed, and the management really needs replacing. To many excuses and never fixed. It has not been a pleasant experience at at all. Very dangerous, in my opinion, to some of the disabled seniors. Get it together Surise!

Don't let the pictures you see online deceive you. Things have changed drastically in the last year, and I don't have anything good to say about Sugar Valley Estates. They've been without a chef, a drivers, a bus - all kinds of things we're paying for. Activities are only once a month now, with no outings anymore. They used to deliver meals to the room when you were sick, but no longer. Recently there was a fire in a dirty microwave, and they did not handle the emergency situation well. The residents were scared and unsure what was going on and what to do. They were given no direction whatsoever. There have been significant price increases. We are not happy at all, and I would not recommend them to other families. I would say turn and run the other way.

The care staff who work directly with the residents are kind, but I am not impressed with admin. There are many things that are told to the family to get them to sign up that doesn't happen. As a family member you have to make sure they don't run out of medicine, they say they will take the person to medical but then it has to be scheduled well in advanced- activities are not appropriate for all residents - too simple. Memory care is for dementia people only, in house physician service doesn't happen. The company feeds into what you want to hear for your loved one and does not follow through from activities to food choices to taking the person to doctor. I would not recommend them.

My Mom was able to elope twice within a 48 hour period so they are not attentive to security alarms. The second time she eloped via a window in her room from a locked memory care unit. She was able to walk across several highways before they found her. The staff is not very caring or friendly. The nicest person was the salesman. Nursing care is not the best. The wall township police reported the facility to the state because of the fact that someone was able to elope twice.

They have a turnover in staff. The food was not good. Sometimes they ran out of food. They did not have many activities. They need to improve on the help, food, and the overall ambiance of the place.

While the staff was wonderful and completely responsive when "Mom" moved in, staffing shortages and high turnover due to management resulted in sub par care, no communication, and facilities decline during her one year stay. Before she had the additional support from hospice there were times she went days in the same clothes (including sleeping in them), medicine and wound care not done on time, excrement left on floor for hours. One time, no one had turned on the lights on after dark leaving her sitting in her living room. She tripped and fell when she tried to take herself to the bathroom. She was supposed to be checked on frequently for incontinence support. There were some wonderful people there but they either left or were so overworked that care suffered greatly
