Sunrise Senior Living

We would have liked this community but it was hard to move my loved one to a different area. We were in a rushed situation and had to make a quick decision for our loved one. We also had a strict budget that we had to stick to.

Sunrise is a lovely place. It has a warm homey and cozy feel to it. One of the main reasons we chose them was because they allowed my loved one to have meals in the suite rather than having to go down to the dining room. We have had some issues with her not getting the care that she should have been. Sometimes the response time is not the greatest from the staff. She does not care for the food much. For the most part everything has been good and she seems ok for what we are paying for. It is not the highest quality but it is definitely better than some others we looked into.

We toured Sunrise and thought it was a nice facility. The location was not ideal, my loved one is more independent and since there is no where to walk, I thought he would feel trapped. If you have a loved one who has memory issues and you want them in a locked facility, then this might be a good fit.

I would tell others that there are staff members that are friendly and seemed like family. I wish that the community did more with the residents. There have been times I have walked in and the residents were sitting in wheelchairs and their heads were down. I didn't care for this, as I feel they could be doing more activities for the residents. It would be nice to see music brought into the community or something along those lines to help the residents. I supply a lot of food and snacks for my loved one, as the food is repeated daily in the community.

During the tour, didn't seem like it would be a good fit for my loved ones.

This community is very nice but the set up of the rooms was not the best. The person who gave us the tour was not the sales person and the room that we looked at was not what we were looking for . This is a newer community but the rooms just did not work for us.

Our family had an in person tour and even though the staff team giving the tour was wonderful, we could not wait to get out of there. It was just older and really did not give off that warm and welcoming feeling to it.

Sunrise was a little too big and fancy, we were looking for something homier. We also did not click with the sales rep and felt that they were being too pushy and aggressive.

On the positives side, we like the concierge, the housekeeping, maintenance staff, and chef. My loved one was in a companion sweet and it was nice. The nurses and med techs are very good. But their healthcare is not good because they do not have enough staff. The weekend staffing is awful, we have to be there to care for our loved one. The staff to resident ratio is very low and there is a ton of turnover. Management hasn't been the best either, they have given me several statement that are completely wrong. I feel like I am not getting what I am paying for. Overall there are positives and negatives to Sunrise.

Brighton Gardens of Charlotte was an older facility. The thing that immediately turned me off was it had a big staircase as soon as you came in. And all I could think of was my loved ones falling down the stairs. . .

We didn't go with Sunrise of Providence for a couple of reasons. Their pricing was very difficult to understand (they gave it to you on a daily rate). Also, it was an older facility, and the furniture and things were very worn.

The staff are not as well trained in handling Alzheimer's/dementia patients, especially the night shift that you don't normally see unless you stay overnight. The nurses are not really trained to give medication properly. We experienced a nurse giving medication and not removing the lid from the syringe, which could have popped down our loved one's throat. They were not properly placing liquid medication in her mouth. It would either drip out or cause her to cough excessively. They were also not properly trained to determine when a person is still alive or has passed. In our situation, they came out of the room and told my sister who had stayed the night that our loved one had passed away. But it was just a long extended breath hold, and she was still alive. My advice to other families - If you can get services from hospice, I would highly recommend it in addition to the nursing home care.

Sunrise of Pikesville is a very nice looking community with newly renovated common areas, hallways and furniture. while the physical appearance is great in most areas, they are lacking in other ways. the resident's living quarters/rooms are not renovated. the bathrooms are antiquated with no storage; they aren't really accessible for those with mobility issues. there's a step-up to get into the shower, which I think is potentially dangerous. I have asked about the bathtub as an alternative and whether or not it can be used, but I haven't received a direct answer. when visiting, you have to ring the doorbell to gain entrance. if they're busy inside, you will have to wait outside until they can let you in. I don't think that this system is secure, because that means everyone is allowed access if they ring the bell. there should be an access code provided to the families to create a better sense of security amongst ourselves and the residents. the previous activities director is non-existent now, so the activities are also non-existent. some of the aides will occasionally color with the residents, or give them puzzles. there is really no true social interaction or entertainment. the residents don't seem engaged with one another, or with the staff. they kind of just sit there watching tv or looking out of the window. they have not hired anyone for that specific role, but they have made promises of bringing in someone for physical activity/fun. I've tried making my own suggestions and requests, but have only be told "we'll get back to you". I do feel that they should have made this a priority months ago, as my loved one hasn't truly been engaged by the staff in months. my loved one, amongst other residents have dietary restrictions and they are not accommodating to those needs. there is no dietitian on site, so I do have concerns about that. There also seems to be a lack of communication with certain departments and people. trying to meet with members of the nursing staff, and management is very difficult. there are times I want to ensure the med techs are taking care of things, but no one gets back to me as I can never seem to find the right personnel. I do feel that there needs to be a liaison between the resident coordinator and the nursing staff. my emails are left unresponsive for several business days, there's just no coordination or sense of "teamwork". this community says that they are open to suggestions and invites emails, so I am following the proper protocol. I just feel that they should instill a better communicative system, especially if I am reaching out regarding dietary restrictions or medications. they say they have people in place, but we don't have access to them. I'm unsure of who they are or where they are? sometimes it feels like I'm chasing a ghost when trying to make contact with certain people. I don't even know where the office(s) are located because when I am able to meet with someone, our meetings are always held in the common areas. when my loved one first moved in, I met several of the nurses/nursing staff, but now I only see the same (one) nurse. there's also no nursing staff over the weekend, so if there's an issue you do have to wait until Monday. of course this raises a concern, as I'm unsure what would happen if there was an emergency. The sales person did a great job selling this community to us, but as soon as we moved in, we noticed that those promises would not be followed through. although I understand that a lot of communities have an issue with staffing retention; I did see a few staff members standing around completing small chores, when that time could be used to interact with the residents. the atmosphere is very blasé. the hallways are very pretty, and I wish the environment matched its appearance. it feels stoic, with no music or liveliness. Sunrise isn't a bad place, I just think it could be enriched more.

Our family had an in person tour and the facility is nice, the room sizes were very nice and gave an edge over another community. The people were super friendly here, even though you could tell they were short staffed.

Based on our tour, I thought Sunrise of Cohasset was nice. But it was a combination of assisted living care with memory care. And they only had a nurse on duty during the daytime. We were looking for a nurse to be there 24 hours.

This is not what I expected. I would like to see them get here quicker when I ask for help. The staff are very good, but on weekends they have temps come in, and they don't know what they're doing or what they're supposed to do. I do like the food though, especially the desserts.

Sunrise of East Meadow has something it could improve on. First the staff in the beginning was very friendly when we were signing the papers, but when that process was all finished we had a terrible experience with them. Being out of state we were told everything in the "trial and error" stay our loved one was going through was included but that was not the case. We saw the room we signed up for and it was bare boned. There was no TV, and if we wanted one we would have to come and set it up. Our loved one needed a hospital bed and wheelchair and that was not included. It was just nothing like we expected. The one nurse we did deal with during our loved ones stay was wonderful,

Our family had an in person tour and it felt like a high end hotel - the community and the staff seemed high end but not in a positive way

I thought that they did great with the activities provided for residents and the room that he stayed in was very nice. I just felt that there was no follow up in terms of coordination of care. I thought their policy and procedure for covid isolation during was poor. The care was inconsistent depending on which staff were working. Compassion from staff varied as well.
