Sunrise Senior Living

It smelled good when we first walked in. The people were friendly. They had a cat and now they have a new dog. The animals made the atmosphere nice. The place is nice and big. The food is good, and it's like going into the restaraunt, you have a couple of things on the menu to choose from and they come and serve you. I did have to make myself heard a little bit to get a few things going. It's one of the few places where everybody has been there a few years, so they can keep their employees. It is pretty expensive though.

Very clean, warm feeling. Felt like I could leave mom there and not feel guilty. Everyone was friendly. Reminiscence (memory care) area almost felt familial. The downside is that services are sold a la carte so it's hard to know how much you'll be paying each month.

Their activities are a little limited, the number of activities geared toward men particularly. They have two computer facilities and neither of them work. I have tried the food and it's a 3.5. The building is nice the people are very friendly, the quality of the nursing staff and in particular the chief nurse is great. It's also close to the hospital. It is on the higher side cost wise.

My parents love itthere but they have issues with hot water. The return water temperature needs to be raised higher. They run the water for over 5 minutes before it gets hot then after 5 minutes it gets cold again. Think of the gallons of water being wasted. It really needs to be looked at. thank you

I toured four facilities and loved everything about this one, so chose it. I have encountered/worked with 4 staff members and each one was caring, friendly,efficient and accommodating. Unfortunately my uncle was hospitalized before we could move "him" in. We have moved his belongings in, again with tremendous cooperation from EVERYONE there. I would love to complete this review once he is in and we have actual experience with him living there, so please feel free to re-send it in about 6-8 wks...FYI...the low stars below ARE NOT a low rating, it is just honesty as I do not know the answers to those questions yet...

I found this to be a very pleasant place for my mother in law. At first she was reluctant but seems to be adjusting great. She has met new friends and participates in activities. My only concer is that the kitchen and bathroom is nit handicap ready. Cabinets not at right height to high to reach when using a walker and toilet to low, we had to purchase a riser for the seat.

The staff at Stratford Court exceeded expectations both in the process of move-in and making Mom feel comfortable and welcome. The facilities are modern and well cared for and clean. Seriously consider this choice for your family.

I can't identify a failure. The physical environment is as far from the feeling of a nursing home or hospital as you can get, and as close to the feeling of a resort you can get. The impression you get of sunrise is from the exterior as well as the interior. It was built expressly for the purpose that it is currently used for, which is a huge advantage.

It was immaculate. They tried to engage all the members of the community in activities. The food could use some more choices, some maybe geared more to the elderly, a lot of people needed help with eating. Overall it was a very good experience. It was better than I expected it be, and very clean. The people definitely cared about the facility and the people. My mom was a little more healthy physically than others there, but they were all mixed together, which can be a little uncomfortable, she was sometimes trying to help the residents at her table. I would definitley recommend it for someone who needs help or assistance. There was a seperate alzheimers floor.

It was the most like a home. Others were more instutional and hotel like. My mom is on the lower level of care needed so she doesn't really use the care services. My communication with the staff has been very good. They are set up in other states so even if you can't go to the one where you are looking at you can visit another and get a good idea. When I go to visit her sometimes I can't always find her because she is out doing things and visiting people in the community.

Every one here is very friendly and helpful when it came to getting my mom adjusted to a new environment. I liked this place because it is a smaller community and makes it very easy for mom to get to know the people and it was close enough for me to get there to visit . I am very pleased with it

They were very good, I was very happy with them.

Today marks two months since my mother moved into Sunrise at Sheepshead Bay. She has memory issues and had not been eating well, was not taking her meds regularly, nor getting out to socialize as she had earlier in her life. The location is perfect. When the weather is nice, she can walk to local stores and restaurants or just stroll on the picturesque avenue. It is convenient for friends and family to visit too. The facility is clean and nicely decorated and the staff are caring and friendly and helped my mother make the transition to living there. At Sunrise, she can be as independent as she can be and gets assistance where needed. My mother is thriving socially, taking her meds and eating nutritious food regularly and says she is very content. There are scheduled activities each day and cultural and shopping trips several times a month. I have spoken with family of other residents and everyone I spoke to was very please with Sunrise.

One thing I really love about this community is how it is set-up on the grounds. It is set far back from the road, so although you are in the middle of a city it has a quieter, country feel. You get all the advantages of having convenient shopping and dining, but none of the obvious business or road noise. The staff are very friendly, and very good at comforting the residents who are having difficulties. It has a very homey atmosphere, the building layout and porches out front make you feel like you are visiting someone's home. The room set-up is also nice, it is a suite set-up, with shared portions like the bathroom and kitchen, but 2 individual bedrooms for privacy. It's something I haven't seen in a senior community. One concern I have is with the pricing. I don't feel they've been clear about the potential costs, as the price we are paying has already gone up since she recently moved in. I feel they could be more upfront about the pricing.

Every Staff member is so nice and acknowledges all who walk by. I was impressed that that included me a visitor too, The facility is always clean and the residents are clean and well tended. They emphasize very much getting to know the client as an individual and trying to recreate the same care that the client is accustomed to .

My mother was a resident at this Sunrise for about ten weeks beginning in mid-July, 2013. The facility itself is a handsome building that reminded me of a small New England resort. Lots of flowers and set back a sufficient distance from Old Country Road. The interior also more like a bed and breakfast than an institution. My mother described it as "cozy." My mother’s dementia can best be described as moderate at this point. She still knows all her family members and loves to show photos of her great grandchildren. Several nurses had mentioned Sunrise Plainview very positively. Their dementia unit holds only 19 residents and they have the required state licenses to permit them to keep their residents longer than most others as their dementia progresses. But I had made a serious mistake by not actually seeing the other dementia residents. As it turned out, 16 of the other 18 residents were so advanced in their dementia that they were unable to even converse with another person. When I would show up to see my mother at various times, I found her almost always alone in the common area facing but not watching the TV. Most of the other residents out at that time appeared to be asleep. One of the main reasons for getting her out of her home had been her social isolation. One Sunday I stopped over at dinner time, when all the residents were out of their rooms. There was quite a din from residents with advanced dementia who were not able to control themselves. Not the place, I decided, for my mother at her present level of dementia. She did get some social intercourse from the staff. My mother liked almost all the aides in the dementia unit, and they were very friendly towards her. Now and then one of these underpaid foot soldiers of the assisted living army would be testy or impatient. But on the whole I would rate the staff as above average and I have a lot of admiration at the way they handled their poor charges. Looking at cost, this facility charges a base room fee and adds charges for higher levels of care needed. There were about four levels and my mother was assigned to the highest level, which was very high compared to other facilities. Find out before signing the contract the level to which your Mom has been assigned, what added services are provided at that level, and if those services are all needed. This review is of the dementia unit of Sunrise Plainview. In my frequent wandering around the main house I saw nothing to create an unfavorable opinion. Their frequent presentation of live music was something to look forward to. In summary, I think Sunrise is a good choice, although rather expensive, for placing your Mom if her dementia is fairly advanced, and I would consider it again for my own mother as her condition progresses.

That was a good one. It was good decor the people seemed pretty happy and pretty active. Fairly reasonable on the cost. There wasn't a lot of place to walk around, though. It seemed a little smaller than we wanted.
