Sunrise Senior Living

The Sunrise at Sheepshead Bay had been extremely helpful to us, at the time when we didn't know what to do and where to go, calling and talking to Erica from "A place for mom" was Godsend. The moment we tour the place we knew this was the right place for my mother in law. She's 97 year old, it's been one month and whatever time she still have, she's happy, feel safe, the staff are all very nice and helpful. They work with love and care.

First impression was that the building was a very new, only built a little of 10 years ago, The interior is more like a hotel than a assisted living building. The areas are all very clean, it has a nice dining area, and equally nice family dining area for private parties. The walls are adorned with beautiful pictures. The staff is very professional and treat the seniors with much respect and caring.

Sunrise at Leawood has made the difficult process of moving my mother to assisted living so much easier. They always are on top of things when it comes to my mother's condition and interests. They are quick to call me when some issue or question about my mother arises, such as whether she is authorized to go out of the facility or when a doctor recommends a medication change. The one issue I still am waiting to assess is staff turnover; so far, it has not been an issue. But we have only been in Sunrise for a few months.

It is a place that you will really like and call home. The service is great, the food is excellent and there is plenty of recreation going on. You may join in a lot of activities if you want to or just relax in the nice living room and enjoy talking to people. You can have coffee, fresh fruit, popcorn, etc. all day. There is also a nice library and movies to watch and visiting musicians, dancers, etc. to listen to and enjoy. I was here a few times temporarily and would have liked to stay there permanently, but my son lives in Richmond, Va. and I had to move closer to him.

As far as the cleanliness goes, there is a distinction between the common areas and the individual apartments. I would rate the cleanliness of the common areas as a 5, but the apartments as a 3. Overall, the value is great. The thing that makes me the most happy is that everyone has been specifically trained to deal with memory impairment. Memory impairment is more than a physical impairment, but a mental and emotional impairment that has it's own quirks. The staff have a high tolerance level and I appreciate their hard work! They are required a certain number of hours of training. Also, there is always a fully registered nurse on staff 24/7. I wouldn't say anything but good things about the staff!

We are as pleased as can be. The staff has been very good to work with, they answer our questions, fill in the blanks, tell us where to go. The residents talk to each other. They are either in the library, or the t.v. room, out on the porch, in the bistro, and they are talking to each other! When you walk in, you hear the sound of life. The staff is very good with introducing people when they first move in, it's very well planned so that the people there feel like they are home as opposed to in a home. She is content and has taken to liking the place. It's big enough so there were people around and yet not so big, that you get a sense of being lost like in the bigger facilities. As we talk they have assured us that she pretty much can stay in the same apartment through hospice, so she won't have to move from section to section. There is also a nursing staff on site 24-7 which was hard to find in a lot of places. It's set in a particular way so it can look like any of the houses in the area, so it doesn't look like a hotel or industrial in any way. This happened to fall at the lower end of the budget we had so the pricing is very fair. They have a monthly brunch that the families are invited to, which is very good by the way, and the directors are the ones who wait on the tables. They are very cognizant of being on the floor and chatting with the residents. They encourage people with small pets, and they have a house dog everyone enjoys. There is a sense of home, and the beauty shop works real well. Some of the activities are kind of corny, according to my loved one. She has a lovely apartment and it's not teeny weeny, she is able to keep her independence and has her own home her own apartment, with a separate sitting area, not just one tiny room. They have a bus and will go shopping, and they have a lunch bunch that will go out to lunch. The one thing that might help sometimes is, while they have a cleaning staff there they could use a maintenance person or handyman type person.

Everything has gone very smoothly for my dad's move into Sunrise of Plano. He was treated kindly in the presale period, but with no high pressure sales. All went well on move day with housekeeping making sure that someone was there to let the movers in. The food is good. He hasn't participated a lot in the activities, but he seems to be getting along well with staff and residents alike. Anytime he has needed help with anything, someone has been able to meet his needs. He's pleased and that's what most important.

We were at a loss as to where to place my mother, until we found A Place for Mom. They were very helpful and we found the perfect place. They relieved some stress for us as we didn't know where to begin. As soon as we walked in I knew it was the right place. Beautiful, clean, the best atmosphere and the friendliest people. Thank you

Beautiful facility with caring staff. Our family member is doing so much better now. Sadly, however, our resources will run out very soon - the monthly fee exceeds what the family can afford.

We toured this location when we were looking into care options for our loved one. This place was very nice looking, it was clean, the people were friendly and very caring, and the care looked great. However, we didn't feel like the atmosphere would be the best fit for our loved one, it was a little more upscale than what we thought she'd be comfortable with.

We're glad we found this place! Our loved one has been doing very well here, and seems happy. The facility itself is lovely, and they always keep it very clean. The staff are very friendly. This place also just had great atmosphere that we felt would mesh well with our loved one. Many of the places we looked at just felt too fancy, and she wouldn't have been comfortable there. This one is much more homey and low-key.

Beautiful facility with very gracious staff for a reasonable price. I've had to put some effort into safety issues and skin care but all suggestions have been received positively with corrections made immediately. Cost is based on level of care needed.

Very pleased with community and moved my mother in within 3 weeks of our tour. Nicely appointed facility, with little cosmetic difference between assisted living area and memory care, making the memory care area as nice as the assisted care. Management and employees very friendly and kind to residents. I appreciated the car model with care managers who provide consistent car to residents. Food looks and smells good and residents may pick meals from a variety of choices. Also loved pet friendly atmosphere which helps make the facility a real home. Sunrise is somewhat costly this the "good" not "great" value, but it feels that we are getting what we are paying for.

Our experience has been with their Reminiscence Memory Care unit. The staff is very helpful and considerate of my mom's needs. They do all that is necessary to keep everyone safe and comfortable. They know each resident by name and and make efforts to learn about their pasts, their "former" lives, their likes and dislikes, in order to accommodate each person's needs. Any questions or concerns are responded to quickly. It is a bit pricey, but at-home care, given the expenses of 24/7 care and maintaining a home, come very close, and the quality of care at home would be less.

My mother-in-law recently moved into the Sunshine Rocklin community and so far so good. The facilities are lovely and the staff are attentive and responsive.

The people that work there are wonderful. They are very loving and caring to the residents and also with me. They take great care of my husband. I would recommend them to anyone looking to place a love one. I made the right decision moving him to sunrise.

It wasn't the option we ended up choosing, but overall it looked like they would be able to provide good care and comfortable atmosphere.

Although this was a difficult decision, it has been the best decision for my mother's well being, both physically and emotionally. She now has regular companionship and has made friends. She is enjoying more activities with time, but the best has been the opportunity to participate in weekly church services, right down the hall from her room. If you are undecided, take the time to visit. It is a warm and caring place.

What I think they are lacking is different things to do for the people. Other than that they are very warm, and caring. They are taking very good care of her. I don't have to worry about the medical part of it. They are nice people, Maria, the nurisng staff, are wonderful they took good care of her for dinner, lunch, and breakfast. Everybody knows who she is when we call. Nothing is perfect, going in is very tough all in all she is doing well. They do bring some people in for entertainment. When the weather was nicer they were going to the park or shopping or doing something nice. I think they should bring entertainment in more like once or twice a week.
