Our experience with Brookdale

I would tell others that there are some very bitter staff here who don't treat the residents very nicely and they seem to be short staffed regularly. The medication management has not been very good either. On a positive note the front desk staff is amazing and they have a very active lifestyle here if you want it, they provide a lot of activities for residents.

lousy communication

I've been trying to get in touch with Brookdale Magnolia for days now. Not answering the phone. Need to communicate the pricing and when to come for Covid Test. I dont understand why they can't communicate with me?

Our experience at Brookdale Magnolia

I would want others to know that from our experience, if the residents has a colostomy bag, they really just do not have experienced staff members for that. They are understaffed with the nurses, when we first got there everything sounded great and they said I could contact them at anytime. That was not the case, when I called they would not ever call me back. They have their own program so you have all medications transferred over, she initially had no copyas. I told them if their program would have no copay we could change her to theirs. She called back and said we could change her over and she would have no copays and that was not the case. We got billed and it took forever to get it resolved since the communication was not good. Overall, we did not have the best experience here. I think it is more suited for elderly people who are able to get up and get involved with activities, not someone who is bed ridden.

Worst expereince of my life

Don't send your family member there. They are understaffed, housekeeping loses everything, I have talked to the manager and he is no help. If it hadn't been for the receptionist, I would have never known my husband with ill. He passed away from the COVID virus. Their communication with me was zero. He hadn't been eating , drinking, or taking his medications for two weeks before he was hospitalized and nobody contacting me and told me. I had gone into the common areas and their were no staff with the residents and I would have to hunt them down to get help. The $2000 deposit was never returned as promised.

Not what is advertised! In order to receive agreed care this relationship has become adversarial at best. Caregivers in west building are friendly but for the most part untrained in senior care procedures. Understaffing is also a problem. The Director of the facility is not care oriented. Should have gone with my gut in the beginning,

I toured this community when looking for a friend. The lady who was supposed to give me a tour wasn't there. I waited then finally someone else showed me this room and I didn't even know where the exit was. There was no parking. The best way to describe it is I spent a lot of time in the Philippines and it was like being there again. They were cooking in the dark with no lights and the overall atmosphere was not appealing.

Not impressed!!

My mother was only at this community for a short period of time but I was not impressed at all with the care they provided my mother. They did nothing to help her improve her dementia and she was just left wandering the halls of the building throughout her days. When we moved Mom there, we were asked if she was an "exit-seeker," and said "No." But how do you know until it happens? One day she simply walked out the front door with no staff in sight to help her out; luckily she didn't fall and walked up a hill to the main office, where I was contacted and told she needed to be moved immediately to a secure memory-care facility, as if it was our fault she had strayed. Overall I was not impressed and would not recommend this place to anyone with memory loss.

too bad

the staff were not trained on alzheimer's patients. I had to hire a outside "sitter" for my husband as he was "combative". He was "combative" because they did not know how to talk or act around him. He was scared. they would isolate him and sometimes forget to feed him. The outside person trained alot of the caregivers for my husband. Food was institutional and the poor chef must have been very frustrated as she was as great baker. I did all my husbands clothes washing. They never had his linens clean and their washing machine and dryer was broken most of the time. We have since moved to a beautiful good place and am still waiting for my husbands sheets, comforter and a couple of other items. My husband had his recliner chair stolen from their shed. Thankfully their facilities man had another which to give me. It's a shame. Some of the help was excellent. Some needed to not be in alzheimer's. Kind of old place and needed major remodeling. I'd never send my loved one here. We didn't know any better at first.

Disappointments & Frustrations

When we first moved our parent into GG, we had high hopes for a pleasant experience. From the beginning, though, there were disappointments & frustrations. That was over 2 years ago. The buildings are old and in need of maintenance/repair ie chips/cracks in the walkways that could cause trips or falls, stinky elevators, cheap blinds in the rooms, drawers that are low and hard to pull out, making it hard for the unstable on their feet, dirty carpets in residents' rooms, etc. There wasn't an orientation for new residents to give them a good start in their new community (ie how laundry service works, when housekeeping will pay them a visit, how to ring for the nurse, how to operate the heater and AC, description of activities and encouragement to participate, how much guests' meals cost, etc.) A buddy system would have been really helpful the first week. Then the unreturned calls when we needed various information. The nursing staff was especially friendly & helpful though. Others in the community often answered questions vaguely. When the elderly are feeling insecure & overwhelmed about losing their independence & their children are hoping mom or dad is comfortable, content & secure, clear, concise communication & direction provides much-needed support to the family, which we really needed. That was lacking at GG and at times, we felt very much alone. And we still do, so we wouldn't recommend GG to others. Look elsewhere to find a place that runs efficiently, smoothly by a cohesive team that is organized, helpful and friendly.

My wife and I stopped in for a tour of the facility. From the outside it looked ok but they need to do some landscaping around the place. It is hard to see and doesn't look welcoming. Once we went in a staff member greeted us and directed us to the facility director. She was very rude. Her demeanor was standoffish and she looked at us like we were crazy when we asked questions. The lack of customer service and friendly environment is what made us decide to move on. The overall facility itself looks nice and is kept up well. The rooms are pretty nice too, but again the director is not someone I would want to leave my loved one with.

This facility felt more like a nursing home. Has need for upgrading. Small air conditioner in one room of a 2/2 unit. A nice feature is the dining room being open and accessible any time from 7 am to 7 pm.

Issues with lack of safety

I totally concur with the concerns expressed by the complaints submitted by the person in August 2014. My mother ended up in Elmcroft due to a fall and broken hip and inability to be independent in her home anymore. She uses a wheelchair or walker but thinks she can walk unassisted. Elmcroft was supposed to be using alarm on her chair so they would know when she tries to get up. The last 3 times I’ve visited they have not had the alarm attached. I’m sure she will continue to try to get up and walk and this is a disaster just waiting to happen. She has sustained wounds on both lower arms---left side scraped skin off from elbow to wrist when she got combative with caregivers and fell. The right arm was severely bruised another time---from elbow to wrist. Her lower legs often have deep bruising on them. I received no information regarding these injuries. When I have brought my concerns up to staff they have said they are glad to see her walking---yes if she’s using the supports needed---but apparently this is not a priority with them—As they do not use the alarm regularly. Several times when I’ve visited there have been no staff in sight. One time, when no staff were in sight, a resident fell and another tried to help her up---staff showed up just in the nick of time. From what I see the ratio of staff to residents is 1:10 or maye 1:8. With residents who have mobility and falling issues this is not appropriate. I cannot believe Elmcroft would continue to serve these residents knowing the hazards and potential for liability issues. To all others rating facilities on this website---be aware you should be filing complaints with Community Care Licensing. You can find their information on the Internet.

Think twice before you place your loved on at Elmcroft of La Mesa, Ca

My mother was at Elmcroft for a brief period of time. From mid May to June 17 where she passed. She broke her right hip late January 2014 and had extensive surgery and a subsequent 90 days of rehab at another facility. Elmcroft is represented as a memory/dementia care locked facility. Mom had moderate dementia and when she arrived at Elmcroft she required a significant level of care which included a two person assist for transfers and assistance bathing, dressing etc. She used her wheel chair daily. We specifically notified Elmcroft that Mom was a fall risk. My greatest concern at Elmcroft of La Mesa is patients do not have a way to reach staff assistance when they are either alone in their bedroom and/or bathroom. There are no pull cords, alarms, bracelets/necklaces for the patients. My mother was often napping in her room alone. I would be present with her for one to two hours at a time and no one came in to check on her safety or whereabouts. If she had fallen and cried out for help this would have fallen on deaf ears because there is absolutely no way for anyone to hear her cries through the hall (fire) door. With the hall door closed it would be impossible for staff to hear her cries or worst case scenario she would fall and be unconscious and no one would find her for in excess of 2 hours. I would hate to think of her hurt and not receiving the care she would need. After the fact, (after Mom moved in) we were notified by Elmcroft staff that the door that led from the hall way to the two sets of bedrooms would have to remain closed because of fire regulations. They indicated to me that the staff would check on the residents in their rooms every two hours. This was not so as I personally witnessed two hour time frames of visits and no one would come to check on my mother. I personally bought a bed alarm and a wheelchair alarm to assist in her care. I also asked the director if we could use a baby monitor in Mom’s room and the receiver at the nurse station. He did not appear to be keen on that idea and said there isn’t always someone in the nurses office to respond. I brought the idea of some kind of call buttons to the director indicating it would serve to make the residents safer. He did not appear very interested. He was temporarily assigned there from Grossmont Gardens, their sister facility. Matter of fact he even had the nerve to suggest that maybe Elmcroft was not a suitable place for my mother. Although, his Staff (RN) made an in depth evaluation stating she was in fact suitable for their facility. I feel Elmcroft was not a safe place for my Mom. And every family should feel that their loved one has a safe environment to live in. Incidentally, Elmcroft had an outbreak of scabies and all residents had to be treated several days after Mom moved in. I personally was unaware of this prior to her move in. I may have had second thoughts if presented with these facts. In addition, while Mom was at Elmcroft she developed two bedsores from the staff failing to change her position every two hours. She also developed pneumonia. I personally observed staff coming to work sick. These elderly patients are very frail and their immune systems are compromised. It was the visiting doctor/nurse from Guardian Angels Healthcare that would examine Mom and find out about her fever, pneumonia, bed sores, bruises etc. Elmcroft either failed to notify us of medical problems or delayed notification. Elmcroft appears to be very understaffed. There is a lead who is a LVN and several med techs and all the others staff are designated as caregivers. I think the ratio of caregivers to patient is 1 to 8 or more patients. This is unrealistic. Additionally I feel the caregivers are not adequately trained for dementia care or senior care. I could tell you so many incidents that even happened in my presence so only God knows what happened when we were not present. I personally feel the minimum training should be a State of CA CNA license to care for the residents. Of course, the majority of the staff at the facility is comprised of the lower paid and non skilled caregivers. I feel their training falls short of the care that they are responsible to give the residents. I must add the caregivers are spread very thin and it is impossible for them to give adequate care. The director never extended his condolences to me in the loss of my mother. What kind of professionalism is this? I tell you to think twice before you place your loved one at Elmcroft of La Mesa.

I toured this facility today in search of a long term care facility for my 95 year old aunt. One woman was being trained and the other supposedly was a community services administrator. I had several questions that the administrator could not answer - I felt these were simple questions she definitely should have had immediate answers to - and she left me sitting with her trainee for a good 10 minutes in awkward silence. The trainee did not attempt to engage in any conversation whatsoever. When the administrator returned with my answers, we toured the facility. Nice facility overall. Looks very clean and well maintained. Just seemed very quiet and subdued, as was the demeanor of the administrator. I asked for a price quote to be e-mailed to me as the pricing structure was very confusing and not straightforward at all. I was promised an e-mail straight away and still have not received one. My aunt will not be living here.

All of the rooms were very tiny and shared, did not like that at all. There were showers in the room and doors on the bathrooms which was good. Didn't have the same warm feeling that Sommerset gave me. Was, expensive compared to Sommerset also.

Not Happy With My Experience

My wife was there for respite care and I was not happy with them at all. I was going to France for 3 weeks and put her there for respite. I got as far as Atlanta, about to board the plane for France, and got a phone call that my wife has fallen and is the emergency room. I had to cancel my trip. I don't think they gave her very good supervision. She just walked out on to a patio by herself and no body saw her fall or anything. She just wandered back inside with a cut on her forehead so I wasn't very pleased with that. They didn't really watch very well and ruined a whole trip to France.

This community seemed dark and dreary when we visited. They did seem to try and keep it clean. The food was not good. There was food spilt on the salad bar and and no one cleaned it off when we were there. They have smaller kitchen areas in the apartments. This does have individual apartments where the front door opens up to the outside. This community was a higher cost than other communities in the area.

Telephone lies

I called to check on my Mother and I was given a general answer of, "She is adjusting well and talking with others." After talking to the nurse at the same facility I found out that she has been in her room with a medical problem the entire time she was there. She may not even be aware that this is her new home. I feel like I cannot trust what is said on the phone. They say what they think you want to hear not the truth. I am going to have to go over once a week, at different times, to check on my Mother. I am very upset about this.
