My Mom has been at the hearth for two years. There are still problems with medication being distributed incorrectly. The people that assist my Mom every day have been very good for the most part. The problem is that when she develops a good relationship with one of the employees, the Hearth then re-assigns the person. Elderly people do not like change. I do not understand why people have to be re-assigned when the residents like the person. This does not make me happy as it upsets my Mom. Also, a lot of time there are too few people staffed to help the residents. You need to have at least two people per floor per shift to adequately take care of the residents. The residents pay an awful lot of money to live in this facility; and, they are not getting their money's worth. The new cleaning person assigned to my Mom's floor does not clean her apartment very well. The one she had before this one was excellent. The hairdresser is a wonderful lady. She is very good with elderly people. My Mom adores her. The food is not very good ( undercooked or overcooked); and, half of the time my Mom does not get what she orders. What they have put on the menus is not at all what they serve the residents. Both of the flags out front need to be replaced. They are tattered and torn, which is a disgrace, especially to the veterans that live in the facility. My mom does not go to the activities. When she first moved in she was told that a resident would assigned to her to help her get acclimated. that never happened. I am there at least three days a week for quite a few hours each time. I see the good and the bad about the facility. For the most part, all of the staff is very good. They seem to really like my Mom, which makes me happy. For the money that Mom pays every month; she is definitely not getting what she pays for. I looked at several facilities before I moved my Mom to this facility. The amount of money was not a problem; as I was told how wonderful the facility was. It is quite a distance from my house, which is not a problem, except that she could have been closer to me and gotten the same type of care for less money at another facility. The corporate people that come in from time to time lack people skills. I am my Mom's advocate. She is very kind and accepting of the way things are at the Hearth. I am not impressed at all.

The food is good. The activities are nominal. Not really challenging or entertaining. Place seems chronically short of staff, especially on the memory care side. The assisted living area has friendly people that seem to care about the staff, they are just under staffed. The memory care section not so much. Not unusual to have them yell at people. While the primary side is fairly bright, open and inviting, the memory care side is stark, dark, and it seems more like a prison. There is no control of the inmates, and they wander into other people's rooms. Make sure you label EVERYTHING, it makes it easier to track down. Food = Great, nice menu and variety. But don't miss the meal what they send up is often lacking. Clean = Yes, I'll give them clean Friendly = On the assisted side, but not the memory side Value = Yes, not bad on the assisted side - Horribly overpriced for what they get in memory care, about twice as expensive as keeping a maximum security prisoner. Care services = I'm not overly impressed with either side. If you miss a meal they may bring one up, but it is a sad affair. The assisted side is fair, the memory car side is lacking. Activities = For the most part kid's would be bored at summer camp. Talking with other residents they wander around most of the time with nothing to do, and the number one complaint they had is boredom. The lady in charge of activities is awesome, and means well, but there really isn't much to work with. I'm not a big fan, Even my parents can only say it's good enough. Mom would leave in a heartbeat. At the prices, I expected much better.

The staff is wonderful but the food is served COLD with very little variety a LOTS of rice. The food budget should be increased to accommodate better meals for the clients.

My wife and I moved in this community because of my wife's condition she just needed more help than I could give. The staff is really attentive and friendly. The community stays clean. We can't really enjoy the activities yet. The outside is nice and kept up. The food is OK its just very limited choices.

I was not impressed at how this community looked or felt. It was cold and felt more like a nursing home and I just di not feel that my husband was going to be a good fit here. The staff did a nice job showing me around and they answered all my questions as well.

Loves the musical entertainment. Will be 106 -in 2 weeks- This is a very pleasant home in my very old age. I take part in bingo, exercise, and bible study. Since I am almost blind. I see a need for staff education of the blind.

My friend is having a rough time here as she needs the lift to help her get in and out of bed and they are slow to respond to her calls when she needs her bed pan. I make sure that I go there everyday as I feel management has the community understaffed. The are 4 different houses and each house has 12 residents with 1 staff member. the staff that is there are very nice and they do try to stay on top of things. Unfortunately, there are very few communities that have lifts and can accommodate residents like my friend. I do have to supply all of her personal care items as well.

Clarendale of Schererville is brand new and I was the first resident to move in they have had several issues with things not working and I am having to keep asking them to come and repair things. It took them 3 weeks to fix my front door so it would lock correctly. The staff is friendly, and there are 2 beautiful dining areas - the food very, very good it a bit spicy sometimes but good. They also allow pets. They are just starting to develop the activities program but they now have games and the residents from the assited living area come and join us. There is a shuttle bus for transportation to doctor appts, shopping and field trips. And they do bring in outside RN should the residents need help.

When I toured and first moved my father into this community, it was a good fit for him. The place was clean and very beautiful. After my father had to go to the hospital, though, they have not returned any of my phone calls, They do not communicate with me and they send me a larger bill for 2 months for not giving them a 60-day notice about moving farther out. It ended up not being a good experience.

Not enough aides, which means my dad is often in bed wet and waiting for someone to come. Food is OK, lunch is boring (same sandwiches over and over)

I had toured this community for my mother and was a little disappointed on how much they charge for any additional help she would need. They wanted to charge me over a thousand dollars for them to help my mother get out of her chair and into her electric chair throughout the day. I was also not very pleased with the evaluation they took of her, they said she was in way worse condition then she actually was and needed more care then what she needed.

Sunrise has not followed through on what they promised. The care manager is not trustworthy. I have received bills for unexpected charges and I have not heard from them on whether these have been taken care of. The residents are not getting things such as towels and when I address any issues the staff seems to not care. I feel they have been dishonest with us.

My pop is having a hard time. No one has been friendly at meals. He stopped going after two weeks of being there. He's a people person, big time. No is talking to him. He never had info given to him. Where's this, what's that, etc. We asked for a outside trash can, the person in the office said, she knew nothing about that. There's no incentive for him. He's paid alot of money, he's regretting this move. We might look else where. Thank You.

This place is all about the bottom line! Its run as a business not a home like you are told! I see this first hand when I visit my loved one. Memory care recently got a new director, and she isnt very approachable. I spoke to her about my loved one and her care, and she seems to have no interest in talking to me, I feel as though I am not being heard. The staff is great, we have had a few things that needed to be worked out, but with working with the nurses, and carepartners things have gotten done. Im going to be honest and say that we arent very happy anymore and are considering moving her out due to the changes and the staff leaving. You know if the staff is leaving in large numbers that tells you something is wrong.

My father had been staying here for a while. He has early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Be advised that if your loved one acts out or has a violent outburst, that they will be sent to the ER for a psychiatric consultation. This could be a hospital stay between a few days to a few weeks. This will happen in every instance of an outburst. The floorplan is not conducive to a well-supervised living situation. It's not difficult for residents to roam around in areas where there is no staff to monitor them. With that being said, I think a better floorplan and better monitoring would allow them to intervene and prevent some incidents escalating to a violent outburst. The staff is very friendly. They have great activities. But if your loved one isn't in a wheelchair and even has a slight chance of getting upset and having an outburst - I would recommend looking elsewhere.

the cleaning help is under par. Coomunication between patient and staff gets lost

During admission, we were not given any real orientation to all services; and the most helpful person was the Director of Repair Services. The repairs and carpet cleaning were not done by move in day, so we were forced to have a one day delay in moving in. There was difficulty in contacting anyone with real authority; although the front desk was always manned and answered questions, they had no authority except to contact someone above them. Also, I could not get ahold of someone in charge, or get a hierarchy of control so I could actually complain and get to someone who could do something about my frustrations. There was significant delay in getting a Care Plan in effect, and there were actual missed meds a few times. My mom has been there about four months now, and things are better, but mainly due to my continued complaining/advocacy and unrelenting pestering. There have been many turnovers in department heads, also, and this was never communicated to the residents/families, except by accidental noticing of notes on the front desk. I am hopeful the new Director of Nursing and Home Care onsite will make meaningful differences and communicate better.

The food has left a lot to desire. It seems to be true that the food portions are developed for the elderly female as my sister suggested. Last several days the scrambled eggs have arrived cold and I was one of the first to be served. The laundry is free but one of the two washers on my floor is broken and I've seen nothing regarding the repairs. The grounds are beautiful but, spending on residents is not where it should be. The chef needs to be sent back to chef school as there is very little originality. My air conditioner seems not to turn off except when I go to bed and turns on when I get up. People have been very friendly. The managers have been over worked and west coast management seems to want to micro manage the project.

We were not impressed with the woman who was showing us the facilities. She was very unprofessional.

It's been a little while now since we were here. It was clean and the daily staff was very friendly. They didn't seem to want to let my loved one out of their room, mostly because they were afraid there would be a disturbance. There were a lot of additional charges, it's really important to read the booklet that they give you, or you might not be aware of the extra charges. They only give you 24 hours to clear the room, when your loved one dies.
